Since I haven't posted lately (Guys I swear I'm working on art-), have some writing I did for one of my fics on AO3 (Moon x Sun ofc):
TW! For fire and sustaining a major injury (not too deeply described, just barely)
It was supposed to be a normal afternoon. Better than that even, considering it was his and Sun's 1-year anniversary today. Moon had spent hours planning the perfect date for them to enjoy after the children left. Even if the Daycare wasn't the most 'romantic' place, Moon had done his best to prepare something nice. He had even managed to convince Vanessa to buy him a necklace online, with the promise of taking over her shifts for the next two months (to which she had reluctantly gave in to).
It was going to be perfect.
Well...it seemed that way in the beginning: everything had been going smoothly the entire morning, and the kids had behaved for the most part as they went through the daily activities. Sun had been doing great as always, entertaining the kids with his endless games and enthusiasm, and Moon hadn't had much trouble with getting the kids to sleep for naptime. It was all going so well that he had even allowed himself to relax, his thoughts drifting to the surprise he had planned for tonight.
Sun had seemed to notice his distracted look, because he had come over to sit beside Moon as they watched the kids do arts and crafts. "Something on your mind, my light?" He teased, nudging Moon's shoulder. Moon snapped out his daydream, glancing at Sun with his own smile. "Maybe." He replied, his voice a little softer than usual.
Sun's grin grew wider. "Oh? And what could possibly be so important that you're this lost in thought about it?" He asked, leaning in closer, and Moon chuckled. "It's a secret...you'll see what it is later though." He promised, and Sun pouted. "Aww...you know I'm not patient Moony!" He complained, though he still held that wide grin. "I know, but I think even you," Moon gently flicked Sun's nose. "can wait a few hours, my love."
The action received a dramatic sigh from his partner, but he reluctantly agreed. "Fine, fine...but it better be worth it! Or you'll be making it up to me with extra cuddles tonight." Sun grumbled, and Moon rolled his eyes. "Always the demanding one..." He murmured, though the affection in his tone was clear.
"As I should be! Besides, extra cuddles are a requirement for our anniversary." Sun insisted, before his eyes lit up. "Oh, that reminds me! I actually have something for you!" Moon tilted his head in curiosity. "Mm? What is it?" He asked, and Sun gave him a smug grin. "It's a secret. You can see it later." He mimicked Moon's earlier tone, and Moon couldn't help but laugh. "Alright, alright, I suppose that IS fair." He agreed. "I guess we'll both just have to wait and see, huh?"
Before Sun could continue his sentence, they were cut off by the alarms going off in the Daycare, followed by a loud announcement: "ATTENTION ALL PIZZAPLEX VISTORS AND STAFF! THERE HAS BEEN A REPORT OF A FIRE. PLEASE PROCEED TO THE NEAREST EMERGENCY EXIT FOR EVACUATION."
Moon and Sun both tensed at the same time, Sun's eyes widening as Moon's painted smile felt strained with tension. The kids seemed to notice the urgent tone in the announcement, and seeing the two Daycare Attendants' expressions only worried them more. Many of them began to whine and cry, and Sun jumped into action. "A-Alright children! No need to worry! This is just like the drills we've practiced before! Please follow either me or Mr. Moon, and please do not wander off!" He directed, his voice shaking slightly but filled with a calm reassurance. Most of the children nodded, while a few others sniffled but began following Sun. Moon made sure to look over the younger kids, picking up a few of the ones that wouldn't stop crying in an attempt to soothe them. Though, even he couldn't help the fact that he was just a bit scared himself.
Although they had practiced for emergencies such as this, there was never a need to actually implement them. The Pizzaplex, even with the constant break-ins, was relatively safe.
He could only hope it was a small fire, one that could be contained.

As it turned out, he had never been more wrong about something in his life.
It had only been a few minutes since they had evacuated, being ordered to wait alongside the other visitors and staff, as well as the Glamrocks, who were doing their best to reassure the guests to the best of their abilities. Sun had managed to get in contact with some of the children's parents, and Moon managed to overhear their panicked voices as Sun reassured them that they had taken the kids outside to safety, and that reinforcements would be arriving soon.
Moon gave Sun a reassuring squeeze to the hand, which Sun returned with a slight smile, though it was tired and anxiety-filled. "Are you sure we got everyone? We need to do a headcount..." Sun murmured, scanning over the children that were gathered around them. "I think we did...everyone was with us in the Arts and Crafts area except for-"
Both Sun and Moon turned to one another as the realization dawned on them. "Marie!" Marie was one of the younger kids, and since she usually preferred to keep to herself in the Naptime Corner while the other kids drew and crafted, she probably hadn't been around when Sun and Moon had led them out the building.
Sun didn't even think twice before bolting towards the building, only for Moon to run after him and pull him back. "Sun, where are you going?" He asked, holding onto Sun's arm tightly, a hint of panic seeping into his tone. "Inside." Sun said quietly, pulling away from Moon's hold as the lunar animatronic only grew more panicked. "What do you mean 'inside'!? Are you insane!?" He yelled. "The entire building is on fire, Sun! You can't go back inside!"
"I have to!" Sun insisted, his voice strained with urgency. "She wouldn't even still be in there if I had done my job and actually checked!" Moon flinched at that, though he knew Sun wasn't exactly entirely lying. Still, he found himself grabbing Sun's hands and taking them into his. "Then let me come with you!"
Sun's gaze saddened, and he offered Moon a comforting squeeze that only served in making Moon's chest tighten even more than it already had. "...Moon." "No, Sun..." Moon's voice was hard, yet it cracked all the same. "Please...don't leave me."
To anyone, Moon looked fine. He probably could've passed off as being completely unaffected. But Sun knew. He knew in the way that Moon's eyes were dilated, in the way Moon's frame trembled and racked with small sobs, to even the slight way that fake smile seemed to falter.
And it took everything in him to not give in.
Instead, he looked at Moon for a moment longer before pulling away. "...I promise I'll be back, Moony." He murmured. "And...if I somehow can't..." He reached out to cup Moon's faceplate into his hand, to which Moon leaned into with a pained expression. "...then promise you won't forget me. Alright?" He whispered, and Moon managed to nod, even as he sobbed quietly. Sun smiled sadly at the sight, and he leaned in to kiss Moon one last time.
...Before running into the burning building.
Even as Moon silently begged for him not to. Even as he desperately pleaded under his breath for Sun to not go. Even as he wanted Sun to stay with him...
...he didn't go after him.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The flames that surrounded him were almost unbearable, and he fought down the painful coughs that threatened to escape his throat. The smoke was thick and made it hard to see, but Sun's eyes searched frantically for the familiar sight of the Daycare doors. Though, it was a bit difficult to tell what was what anymore, since everything was almost unrecognizable from being melted underneath the flames. A small part of him ached at the sight, seeing everything he had grown to be familiar be engulfed by the flames.
But what hurt him the most was seeing the Daycare.
Plastic play structures had melted from the heat, the walls that had once adorned the children's drawings were now nothing but rubble, and Moon's room, the small yet comforting place that held so many memories of his nights with Moon, had collapsed to the ground.
It felt like something inside of him broke at seeing everything, and the memories flashed in his eyes for a few moments. Memories of his friends. The Daycare. The kids. Moon. Everything they had given him, every moment he had had with them, had been in this place. And as cliche as it was, it felt like those memories were burning alongside the fire. And that hurt. So much.
He didn't have time to dwell on that pain, though. Because the sound of faint coughing coming from the supplies closet caught his attention. He snapped out his daze, hope and relief filling his chest as he ran towards the source of the sound, not caring about the burning pain that stung at his legs as he made his way through the fallen debris. "HELLO? MARIE?" Sun called out, hoping to hear that small familiar voice call out to him. Something, anything that would reassure him that she was okay. That he wasn't too late.
And his wishes were answered, because he heard a soft voice, barely audible, come from the closet. It only encouraged to run even faster, forcing his body to push itself even as it protested against the intense movement and pain. "MARIE!" He kicked the door with a slam, and it opened up. And inside, to his immense relief, was the young girl, coughing and crying amidst the smoke.
"Marie! Oh thank god!" Sun dropped down beside her, taking her into his arms. He felt her cling to his shirt, her sobs growing louder as she buried her face into his shoulder. "You're okay, you're okay, I've got you." He whispered, his own voice choking up as he held her tight. As much as he wanted to reassure her though, he knew he needed to get them out before it was too late. "C'mon Marie..." He coaxed softly, urging her to let go and follow him out of the closet. "I know it's scary, but we need to go through the fire to get out, alright?"
Her little hands clutched at his own hand, and he could tell that she was scared, but a small nod from her was enough reassurance to know that she would cooperate. So he began leading her out the Daycare.
The two of them staggered through the burning building, attempting to avoid the crumbling rubble that was around them, some excess rubble falling from above, and Sun did his best to protect Marie from it. The more they ran, the more Sun felt his breathing begin to go ragged, and he forced himself to stumble forward. The smoke was beginning to be too much for him, and he looked back at Marie to see how she was doing. She wasn't holding up any better, and she seemed to be doing even worse than he was. So he scooped her into his arms, keeping her close to his chest as they continued to run. "H-Hang...in there Marie...w-we're almost there..." Sun reassured, his voice rasped and pained. "Just a little-"
He doesn't get to finish his sentence, because his body decides that now is a good time to give out. He stumbled towards the ground, and he held Marie close to his chest, grunting in pain as he fell. "Shit!" He cursed, wincing in pain as he looked down at the little girl, who had shakily gotten up. She seemed uninjured, though she was looking over Sun with panic and tears. "M-Mr. Sun?" Her small voice cracked his heart, and he forced what little strength he had left to get back up, ignoring the intense pain that shot through him. "I-I'm fine, little star. C'mon, keep going." He gritted out, doing his best to sound calm even if he was anything but.
She nodded, and Sun picked her back up and kept going. He could see the exit in sight, and he almost laughed in relief. If they kept going, they could-
Another loud thump to the ground cut him off again, but this time, he knew it wasn't just his body.
He wished it had been though.
Because the pain that followed that sound was agonizing.
Sun screamed out in agony as a heavy metal beam collapsed directly onto his leg, pinning him down. He could feel the intense pain enveloping his entire body, and he all he could do was sob. His ears were ringing with static and silence all the same, and his vision began to blur; whether it was from his tears or the smoke finally getting to his sight, he didn't know. What he did know was that Marie had ran towards him, and he managed to somewhat look up to see her standing over him, her own eyes wide with fear and horror. "MR. SUN!" Her terrified scream made his chest ache even more, and he faintly felt her tugging at his arms. "M-Mr. Sun, get up! Get up!" She cried, pleading, and Sun wished he could. He really did.
"Marie...you need to go..." Sun managed to get out, coughing. He knew the sight must have been traumatizing for such a little girl, and he felt guilty that she had to watch. Probably not understanding any of this.
He just hoped she'd be able to live a stable life after this.
"B-But Mr. Sun, what about you?" She sobbed, and Sun forced a smile. "I-I'll meet you outside in a second, alright?" He lied, and the little girl seemed hesitant to believe him, but a reassuring look from him seemed to somewhat convince him. She sniffed, wiping her tears before running off. He knew they weren't far from the exit, and he hoped that she'd be able to get through the last bit of the way to safety.
Watching her run off, he was left with the silence of the room, the only sound being the crackle of the flames that were beginning to surround him. It was almost mesmerizing watching the yellow and orange colors flicker and dance in a warm light, and if he didn't know that they were possible of burning down a building as big as the Pizzaplex in only a few minutes, he would've been entranced with them. Instead, his mind wandered towards his leg. It was still extremely painful, though he couldn't really feel much anymore...though, he assumed he was probably in some sort of shocked state.
Or maybe...he was being granted relief from the pain in his final moments. The idea of that nicer, so he decided to believe that. It's what Moon would've probably said in an attempt to make him feel better.
His heart ached at the thought of his beloved waiting for him outside of the building, probably on the edge of a panic attack, blaming himself for not doing enough to stop Sun from going in, for not doing something to help. Even if it was anything BUT Moon's fault.
Sun sighed and allowed his eyes to close, the darkness providing a sort of comfort for him. It reminded him of nights cuddled up in Moon's room, watching the stars in the small window that was built on the ceiling of the room. He could easily imagine Moon's lovely face staring up at the ceiling with sparkling eyes, and the warmth of the flames around him reminded him of the warmth of Moon's arms as he held him close. He had been hoping to have a moment just like this one for their anniversary.
And there, in the silence of the burning remnants, Sun breathed his final breath.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
It felt like the minutes that ticked by had turned to hours, each one even more agonizingly long than the one before. It had only been 10 minutes since Sun had gone into the fire, and yet, it felt like it had been centuries. Moon's hope had faded to nothing but a small flicker, as he stared at the burning flames in a daze. He wanted to run into the flames, wanted to break down sobbing and begging to whatever god was out there to return Sun to him safely.
And for a moment, he thought his pleading had been answered when the firefighters finally arrived, bringing out a small girl in one of their arms a few minutes later. Moon immediately recognized her, and he didn't listen to any of the other employees or even Vanessa as they all yelled at him to get back to the kids, running as fast as he could to the group of firemen.
They seemed to be instantly wary of him when he approached, warning him to step away from the little girl, though when they realized she seemed to recognize Moon as well, they allowed her to run towards him. Moon immediately knelt down and hugged her, attempting to reassure her sobs and cries, though he found himself looking around for any sight of his lover.
But he was met with nothing but the sight of firemen surrounding the entrance.
...Where was Sun? He was supposed to be here. He had gone in to get Marie, and she was here. So why wasn't-
He got his answer a minute later, when he heard yelling and tense shouting coming from inside the building, followed by a small team of firemen running inside the building while some paramedics stayed nearby.
And when they returned, they were holding something...no, someone that Moon realized, as his heart dropped deep into his stomach, was someone very familiar.
