One piece of evidence of how excessively James spoiled Sirius:
Obviously, James knew the “Shrieking Shack incident” was a grievous mistake, but I honestly don’t feel like Sirius ever took it that siriusly, even in his later stage.
Really don’t think James ever blamed him for this, or even properly talked it through with him.

All of James’ relationships ended because of Sirius. James always spent too much time with him, always took his side over his partner’s, always got more emotionally fulfilled by him. He loved his partners, of course, but they were always second to Sirius. And when they finally had enough and gave him the ultimatum, well the fact that they thought they had a chance against Sirius meant they never really knew him at all.
James definitely was Sirius's gay awakening and you can pry this headcanon from my cold, dead hands
