We have been doing some research and studying old pictures of Umgwalo (Ndebele Art or house painting) and we have discovered that the are actually 3 styles of Umgwalo. 1. Symbolism style - this style is more connected with tradition and is usually used to announce initiations ceremonies or weddings. 2. Expression - this style is more of the artist expression and normally features shapes of houses, castles and other domestic products 3. Esthetics - this is the modern style that is popular, which is more about organising geometric shapes and colours to create beautiful patterns.
