This theory has been at the back of my mind for awhile now. So, here’s go nothing

Headcannon why Genshin Impact devs made Zhongli a support unit!

This isn’t gonna matter after 1.3 update but whatever...

So, I’ve been thinking of this since I’ve known what Zhongli’s kit was. And like many other, I was pretty confused as to why he’s a support instead of a dps. It didn’t make any sense cause Rex Lapis, Morax, Geo Archon, etc is supposed to be one of the strongest among the seven.

I was enlightened after awhile. What if Zhongli spent almost of his time after the Archon War practicing/learning to be a support. If you look at it from his pov, losing Guizhong and seeing so many deaths, it would make sense why he’s a support. Zhongli, who’s tired of people important to him dying, became a support to prevent it. His E, which can generate a shield to protect his friends, give a geo pillar, so most enemies can’t hit them. His Ult summons a meteorite and petrified enemies to give the player time to escape or to heal up.

This would make sense why Zhongli is a support instead of a dps. But maybe I’m just looking in this too much and wasting your time idk.
