Nouveau Vélo is a dutch trio who hail from Helmond, Holland and with their S/T LP released last year given us a solid LP full of solid rock and roll jams. Have a listen to Blue Lights, a holy trinity of catchy lyrics, melody and vocals on Bandcamp. One of 2014 best releases but I can add it to this year’s list as well!

The Homesick - Cut Your Hair

17 oktober: Ik las laatst een interview met The Homesick, een band uit Dokkum en moest op een of andere manier gelijk aan Afterpartees denken. De nonchalance, de humor en de wetenschap wel degelijk iets magisch in handen te hebben, was er hier ook. Wat geweldig om te merken dat we jonge muzikanten in ons land hebben die dit vuur in zich hebben. The Homesick bestaat uit drie jonge heren uit Dokkum die naar eigen zeggen iets maken dat het midden houdt van dreampunk, psychpop en cultnoise. Zes termen verpakt in drie woorden die stuk voor stuk terug te horen zijn in Cut Your Hair, maar veel belangrijker is dat de sound meteen raak is. Vanaf de eerste gitaarnoot zit het nummer geramd. Een heerlijk gevoel dat me niet meer loslaat. Ook de (bewuste) missertjes her en der, prachtig. Stop Joy Division, Ariel Pink en The Strokes in een blender en je krijgt iets wat op The Homesick lijkt. Maar de zelfverzekerdheid en arrogantie waarmee dit gebracht wordt, kun je niet kopiëren. Die heb je of heb je niet. Er zit op dit moment gewoon wat in het water in Nederland. Dat kan niet anders.

"All the Girls are Grey" by The Homesick // Twst yr Wrsts (Out Now via Bandcamp)

It’s pretty easy to fall in love with the dreampunk sounds of The Homesick. The Dokkum, Holland based three piece create music that sounds at times chaotic, but always hyper melodic. There’s an energy piled into every song that feels youthful, but earned - it’s not achieved by accident. These guys are just really good at what they do. A healthy sample of what they do is now available in the form of their new 6-track EP, Twst Yr Wrsts, and especially in the ultra-infectious gem, “All the Girls are Grey”. That track in particular, with its rolling percussion and shimmering guitars, is a standout in an EP of standouts. Check it out above, and then check out the rest of the EP at Bandcamp!
