I was thinking about why Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond is so hated.

The obvious answer is because of the horrible things she did.

But the other diamonds did horrible things too…worse things even.

Pink abandoned Spinel, which is wrong, but Spinel was planning to kill every living thing on Earth to spite the son of a person who was no longer even alive. Yet, no one talks about what a monster Spinel is.

So many Steven Universe characters have hurt people, but we forgive them and are happy to see them redeemed.

So why not Rose?

Then, it hit me: because Rose’s redemption arc is told to us in reverse.

The first time we see Rose is toward the end of her life when she is pregnant with Steven. We see her appreciation for life and how full of love she is for Greg and her future child. She’s willingly sacrificing herself to bring a new life into the world.

But then, we start learning who Rose used to be, all her mistakes, all the people she hurt.

The loving mother in Steven’s video becomes a distant memory.

For those of you who hate Rose, imagine her backstory unfolded a little differently for us.

We’re introduced to Pink Diamond: she’s spoiled, bratty, immature, irresponsible, and inconsiderate.

She throws temper tantrums when she doesn’t get her way.

Not exactly an endearing character, right?

But one day, her tantrum injure Pink Pearl, her best friend. From that day on, she keeps everything to herself. Now we see her dealing with a consequence of her bad behavior.

Then we see how she’s abused by the other diamonds. We start to sympathize with her.

We see her try to save Earth. We see her trying to do the right thing for once.

But it backfires horribly.

She spends the rest of her life trying to fix it, but she can’t.

She meets Greg. Here is where Rose has the most emotional growth as a character. She learns what is truly means to be a “real person.”

Finally, she grows such an appreciation for human life, that she decides to sacrifice her form to bring her son into the world.

The reason Rose is so much more controversial than other characters who have done problematic things is because her story is told in reverse, her redemption comes across as a fall from grace.

But there are plenty of characters who have a fall from grace who are still not as controversial as Rose. The reason why many people are less sympathetic to Rose is because we never see how Rose reacts to her mistakes. We never get much insight into how Rose feels about herself and the things she’s done. We get small hints:

For everyone who hates Rose, I get why. But I think we need to remember who she became instead of who she was.

Uhh… nope? That’s a no from me.

To call the story of Pink Diamond a “redemption” is a stretch. Sure, she got better. But better than shit is still pretty low.

The thing that makes Pink Diamond such a widely hated character is that she had thousands upon thousands of years to DO SOMETHING ABOUT HER MISTAKES.

At literally any point she could have gone and got Spinel. At any point she could have freed Bismuth. At any point she could have at least tried to shut down the HUMAN ZOO THAT SHE OWNED, and tried to free Pink Pearl, her slave that she abused to the point of scarring.

Pink Diamond isn’t hated because of a reverse redemption arc. She’s hated because she only became redeemed in her own eyes, and nobody else’s. She never did anything to make up for her transgressions. She literally did NOTHING. She hid her problems away where nobody would find them and just pretended they didn’t exist. Bismuth, Spinel, Pink Pearl, the countless deaths on her hands. For every single one of them, she could have done something. She could have tried, even if she failed, she could have tried; but she didn’t. She didn’t care. She didn’t give a single shit about any of the people that she abused. All she cared about was getting rid of all the evidence so that she could clear her name and make sure that there was nothing around to stand against her lies.

Pink Diamond never had a redemption arc. That would require her actually working to fix the problems she caused. She didn’t fix anything, she just hid it all and hoped nobody would find out.

so in steeb‘s UwUniverse, the diamonds are sympathetic characters but kevin can fuck right off? Like last I checked Kevo did not colonize countless planets, commit genocide on multiple occasions, and enslave nearly all of his own species for eons.

tbh escapism was one of the most boring episodes i’ve ever seen. the song was bullshit because there was no in-universe singing for such an emotion and character driven song. 98 percent of the episode was filler and i kept wishing for stevenmelon to just die so he could get into a more useful body.

What if in su they had made visors like a status thing. Like to show who was leading the mission? Cause I think they do it to a point, but they could also do it more. Like Rose could’ve used a visor that doubled as a cover to hide her diamond eyes, and then it could’ve been a metaphorical thing for her to pass it on to Garnet before she gave up her form. The Diamonds could have them in general to show both leadership and a reference to how royalty used to keep “the common folk” from making eye contact with them or whatever. Aquamarine could’ve had the visor because she seemed to be leading that operation. Holly Blue taking her’s off when the Diamonds came to the zoo. 

And Pearl’s outfit and it’s transparency should’ve totally been a thing about pearls in general, and her getting a completely solid coloured outfit should’ve been like an inconceivably bold thing to do because that’d be like her showing off that she is in fact an equal to any other gem. I think little subtle things like that could’ve taken the show some places with symbolism.
