Pretty much. Steven believes it’s his job to unify adults with problems, adults who are both parental figures to him. He didn’t want Greg to be hated and he didn’t want Greg avoiding the gems because of how Pearl felt about Rose.
It happened with Amethyst and Greg as well with Steven finding Amethyst literally turning into his mom to hurt Greg, which was probably one of the worst thing I’ve for Steven mentally.
Amethyst was jealous that she felt like she lost a friend because Rose wanted to spend time with Greg, causing toxicity within Amethyst that surfaced as possessive anger. Thankfully she moved forward and let go of what could have potentially ruined a relationship with her and Steven forever but mostly because Steven was willing to forgive.
In that moment when Steven physically closes out what he’s doing Amethyst do as his own mother? The tv goes static. That episode had only just started playing. Steven’s powers did that on their own.
Steven should never have had to be the one to fix these things but his entire life shaped him to feel responsible for them happening because he has Rose’s gem.
Steven even has to watch Garnet physically fall apart into Ruby and Sapphire because his mother’s lie hurt them so badly they couldn’t stay fused. It led to him planning their wedding and essentially making sure it all hinged on his ability to unify them.
Another song that I used to think was cute was the song Steven sings for that wedding. You know, the song where he starts off saying he’s “a little upset” but hey! A wedding!!
Then after that that wedding with all of those repressed feelings IT’S TIME TO TALK TO BLUE AND YELLOW! LIKE DIRECTLY AFTER!
Steven was fourteen and mentally a little younger along in development because of his gem not finding it necessary for him to age the way most humans did. Heck, in the wedding episode he even shaves the single facial hair he grew in the birthday episode where he turned fourteen. But still! He’s trying to grow up but growing up healthy is hard when all of this happens.
The trauma this kid has endured more than makes sense as to why he’s so conflicted in Steven Universe Future.
Why does he need to be needed? Because he always felt he had the answers and now he can’t even solve his own problems. Even when he sees them before himself as being valid in the form of a cactus only behaving as the role model it had growing up, he still denies it for himself.
He needs to be needed because he thought he always was when it was never, ever his duty to fix relationships or emotional trauma. He was just there for it and had input that helped even though no child should do that for their guardians. It gave him a sense of importance that he feels lost without.
