Uhhh, this is my first ever story I'm posting on Tumblr idk what I'm doing.
This was actually for a school assignment with a word limit (which I have passed. Significantly.) so the start isn't great because I had to cut back on a lot of details I wanted to write in order to not pass the word limit, but I gave up on keeping it below the word limit towards the end so I think it gets better.
I would love criticism and please for the love of God correct my grammar if there is a mistake because I hate it when there is a grammar mistake in something I'm reading.
Anyways read this if you want to I guess.
Deedee is a normal girl who likes learning new things, she lives in a small city and works five days a week. However, one thing that might separate her from an average person is her height. She’s a whole ten centimeters tall! That is not a cause for concern though, as it is quite normal for her species. She lives in a city where she lives with other tiny people just like her. These tiny people are called “minilings”.
Their city takes place in the heart of a magical forest, surrounded by an invisible force shield that protects them from any threat and danger.
When she went out to begin her day, she had thought that it would be like any other, her usual routine of going to work, doing chores and maybe spending some time with her friends at the end of it, she couldn’t have been more wrong.
As she was walking towards the marketplace to get breakfast, she saw her friend and colleague, Vik. Vik walked towards her and told her that she had to hurry up to the city hall to talk to the elders. She said that they’re calling her for an emergency. Deedee knew she had to be quick, the elders that ran the city were important and they protected the city so if they were calling for an emergency, she couldn’t make them wait too long.
She got to the city hall and the elders filled her in on the news. It was terrible. There was a problem with the force shield that protected their city, and Deedee, as one of the main sorcerers, had to look at it to find a solution. If the force shield malfunctioned, who knows what kind of tragedy might befall their little city!
She was filled with dread and apprehension, feeling a void in the pit of her stomach. She realized just how important this task was and she was fully ready to do her duty. The elders explained what she must do. She couldn’t do this alone and had to have help, except, her colleague Vik was too inexperienced to help out with such a quest, and she only had two other colleagues, one of which was so sick that he couldn’t even get out of bed, so she couldn’t ask for his help. This left her with only one choice.
Right as she was thinking about this, the door to the meeting room opened up to reveal the too-happy-looking Ray. Ray started talking about how big of an honor it would be to get to work with Deedee. Now, it isn’t as if Deedee hates Ray. She just thinks that he’s a bit irresponsible and carefree. She simply thinks that he’s not suitable for such an important task, but she also knows that she doesn’t have much choice. She resists the urge to roll her eyes and tells Ray to follow her in an exasperated voice. She could feel the in-coming headache from having to deal with him already.
Ray asked Deedee where they were going. Deedee huffed and gave a cursory glance towards Ray before telling him that they were heading to the library to grab books about defensive magic and about the barrier. Ray groaned about having to read and asked her if they couldn’t just go to the shield to see what was wrong with it. Deedee couldn’t believe him, how had he even managed to get this position, why did he even become a sorcerer if this was how he was acting!
They went to the library and Deedee got all the necessary items. She had to suppress a smile after seeing Ray fall from one of the ladders against the bookshelves. After that they headed over to the part of the barrier that was reported to be weakened.
At this point Deedee was really starting to feel the effects of the day she has had so far. Pangs of hunger were coming from the pits of her stomach from having not had breakfast, a sense of dread was curling in her chest from the looming fear of not being able to fix the force shield, her feet were aching and throbbing from having rushed around everywhere, and Ray’s incessant commentary was inflating her head like a balloon.
Deedee has been trying to find the issue with the barrier for a solid two hours at this point but to no luck. Ray talking about how they were going to be considered heroes after all this was not helping her and it was making her blood boil and causing her muscles to tense.
Deedee suddenly remembered a book she once read. It was a kid’s book about the power of voice. It was a silly book meant to teach children about the importance of talking and expressing oneself. However, that wasn’t why she was thinking about it right now. Perhaps she could take the message from that book… a bit more literally.
Deedee tried to remember a particular spell she had once learned, her heart started beating and she could feel sweat beading on her forehead, her thoughts were going a mile a minute. If she could pull this off, she would not only save her city but also save anyone from having to suffer though the torture that was Ray’s voice-
Deedee finally remembered the spell, she pointed one hand towards Ray, who was looking at her with his eyebrows raised and a questioning look scrunching his face. Deedee told him that it would all be for the sake of their people and that Ray would be considered a hero for his sacrifice. Before Ray could ask her what she meant, Deedee began casting her spell, her hands started glowing and she started singing a simple rhyme, Ray had begun yelling in his panic and confusion but gradually his voice turned down. After he had been rendered completely silent, Deedee pointed at the barrier instead. A ball of light came from her hand and made contact with the barrier instead. The barrier gave a large pulsating light and… and it was strong again! Perhaps even stronger than it has been before!
Deedee jumped in joy, her spell had worked, their city was safe again! She saw Ray at the corner of her eye. He was trying to tell her something but wasn’t having much luck with it. He stopped moving his mouth, looked her in the eyes with frowning eyes and pointed at his throat. His question was clear. Deedee held in a smirk and looked at him with scrunched eyebrows and pouty lips, her voice sounding so exagerratedly concerned that it could not be real.
She told him it was a spell that could take away a strength from one and give it to something else, a sort of enchanting spell to make an object or person stronger. Sure it was considered dark magic since it was essentially taking an ability from a person, but Ray has proven throughout the day that he had been willing to go the extra mile to save their city from doom.
Ray looked at her with huge eyes, started shaking his head left and right, his lips trembled, and his shoulders hiked up, he could not believe the things he was hearing.
Deedee took him to the city and told the elders that they were successful, the elders praised them and thanked them for their hardwork. Deedee from that day on decided to expand her knowledge on spells even more, she did not discriminate between spells, whatever would do the job was important to her, she would use any spell as long as it would protect her city and people.
