I don't care about artfight but this is a great time to remind everyone:

tracing is fine and not "cheating"

Some obvious exceptions I have to point out because I know some 12-year-old is gonna hit me with an um actually:

Tracing another artists work and posting it and claiming it is yours- the issue isn't the tracing, the issue is claiming it is yours. I've traced art styles I like in order to study them before, but I don't post those publicly.

Tracing when the goal of the piece is to practice observation (most art assignments) - you are only cheating yourself, why are you in school?

Tracing a pose and claiming you didn't - the issue is the lying, not the tracing.

Tracing is often considered "bad" because it is limiting and can become a crutch. It can also be beneficial for making art and for learning. There isn't a bad or good just pros and cons. Trace to your hearts content. Who cares. It's art. Do whatever you want, just have fun and be nice.

the thing about media literacy is that understanding why the author chose to specify that the curtains are blue is the same skill set as understanding that the way the author characterizes all black characters as angry or all chinese characters as meek and silent is racist. it is the same skill set as being able to identify when a news source is biased or when someone is feeding you propaganda. the ability to ask "why did this person choose to present this premise in this specific way?" is a critical skill in a world full of misinformation. why are the curtains blue? maybe it's a characterization detail. maybe it's extraneous worldbuilding. why is this character written as being right all the time? maybe you're intended to disagree with them. maybe it doesn't matter. maybe you should still ask why.
