Hi, hi, hiiiiii, so sorry it took so long to get back to you! I wrote this sporadically throughout the past two weeks and the prompt got away from me immediately (áľâáâ) the only similarity is that they're somewhere they can eat, but i've never written a date before and this is deffo closer to angst than a fluffy burger date ( ._. )""

Summary:
Jacob meets with Ricky after getting back from the adventure that was the first three books, Ricky confronts him and their conversation gets cut short. (feat. the youngest of the peculiars acting like kids lol)
Two boys sat across from each other in a booth pushed into the corner of an old diner. Jacob, the shorter of the two, only just now taking his seat despite being the one to plan their âmeeting.â The day before, he had messaged the green-haired teen to ask for a chance to reconnect. He hadnât typed those exact words, but he wasnât about to open the text string back up to see everything he had ignored in his absence.
Jacob, curly dark brown hair starting to grow past his ears, had his head down with his bangs obscuring his face and a foot tapping on the floor. He had tried multiple times to speak but the words wouldnât come, all that bubbled up were feelings of nausea and faint guilt. Rickyâs jaw clenched as he continued to stare at the shorter, but they had reached the 30 minute mark of silence, and seemed to be going for their personal record, before Ricky shook his head and crossed his arms.Â
âTen months. What the hell, Jacob?â
Jacob drew himself up and his brows furrowed together. He took a deep breath and shoved down his irritation. Ricky has every right to be angry. He needed to remind himself, Ricky had no clue where he had been for all that time. He opened his mouth but the words died out as Rickyâs expression twisted against its will into something painful to look at.
âYou invite me to a stupid birthday party full of rich assholes who hate you and you apologize to me just to ignore me for months and then go to some fuckinâ- island? All summer. And leave me to wonder what happened? Why you pulled away, why you left. And suddenly youâre back from that summer vacay and your parents are freaking out and leaving the country.â
Jacob picked at the skin around his nails and sighed. âI⌠Iâm sorry Ricky. You wouldnâtâŚâ get it. He was totally off kilter. It had been months since he had to talk to someone he felt didnât get it. Longer than two months. Even longer than ten.
But since that night his grandfather died almost a year ago, he hadnât had someone who understood. Since he hurt his only friend and pushed him out. Since that birthday party in October where he wanted desperately to curl up and die. Since the only people who he thought knew sent his parents away on an extended vacation because they couldnât handle the truth.
He needed someone right now, but even his own stupid feelings didnât understand. He needed someone who knew, like Ricky had, but he couldnât just say that. Not after ghosting him for months and distancing him for even longer.
âWhat? âI wouldnâtâ what?â Ricky sounded resentful. âI wouldnât understand? I wouldnât be able to help? What would I not do, Jacob? I want to know what happened to you. I want to know how to help.â
Jacob looked back to Rickyâs face and he let out a shuddering breath. Ricky looked hurt. More worried than his parents had when he told them how he found his grandfather. More angry than Jacob himself had ever been about his own situation, anger issues and all. The other looked sort of determined, and it made his stomach sick.
Jacob bit the inside of his bottom lip, the corners of his mouth, the scarred skin on the inside of his cheeks. He swallowed the spit building in his mouth. Every breath he took was slow and shallow, shaking on the out. There was no easy way for Jacob to tell him what happened without seeming crazy, he resigned himself to a lie butâŚ
He wanted to⌠confess. So badly, he wanted to confess. To rip open his abdomen and spill his insides for the other to see. He wanted to tell him everything he went through; wanted to have someone who understood again. He wanted RickyâŚ
Confusion flooded his brain while his heart urged him to act. Act on what? The need for a confidant maybe? Jacob wasnât sure what was pulling at his stomach, stealing the breath from his lungs, but he did know⌠He wanted Ricky to do the same.
He wanted Ricky to reciprocate his actions and wanted him to tell Jacob everything that had ever plagued the confrontational teen. He wanted to take those organs and house them in his soul then crawl into Rickyâs chest to protect his deepest fears and darkest secrets. He wanted to reach up and grab the beating heart above his new home and feel the blood rushing through it. The life powering his closest- friend.
But why would Ricky believe him? He didnât before, when Jacob started to think his life couldnât get worse. Now, with all of the things heâs seen and done, there was no room for disbelief. No room for him to grieve his best friend, not again.
He took in air after his prolonged silence and closed his eyes to ready himself. As he opened them to look Ricky in the eye, a voice made him still. A young voice that he believed was at home, almost 2 miles away.
âJacob!â He leaned out of the booth to look for the girl with a backmouth as he was ambushed by another equally small child.
âOlive! What happened?â He let out an oomf as the first child slammed into him as well. âClaire? What are you two doing here? Where is Ms. Peregrine? Whereâs Bronwyn?â
He wasted no time inquiring after their headmistress and the closest to a caretaker of the small peculiars, rushing everything out as fast as possible. He checked them over as the two squirmed in his lap.
âYou said you would be back before dark!â Claireâs voice was frantic.
âWha-â
âYeah, itâs almost half past 8!â Olive cut him off.
Jacob glanced at the watch on his wrist.Â
8:05 PM. The sun had set only 10 minutes ago. Not exactly half past 8, but definitely half past the girls' patience and nerves.
âSo, what? You walked here yourselves? No one else with you?â
The two nodded, proud they had memorized the path without help.
âDo you know how dangerous that was?â Jacobâs voice was high and strained. His eyebrows were pinched and upturned, his mouth pressed into a line. âYou couldâve gotten hurt- or worse! What were you two thinking?âÂ
The girls shared a look before Claire turned back to him and started to speak. âWe thought something bad happened-â
âWhat the hell?â
Jacob remembered the person sitting on the other side of the table and froze.
âWhat is that.â
He sat as still as possible before realizing what it must be that he was seeing. Jacob scrambled to turn Claireâs face toward Ricky instead of her backmouth, but knew it was futile.
âAre those teeth?â He sounded vaguely apprehensive as he squinted at the back of the little girlâs head.
âUhm-â
âNo!â Olive shouted. âTheyâre- err- just shiny bits! Too much hairspray, yâknow?â
Ricky looked offended by the lie. There was no way you could mistake the gaping maw at the back of Claireâs head for anything else, even under the shoddy diner lighting.
âAre you kidding me?â Ricky sounded far away. His eyes flickered from Olive to Claire and back before settling on Jacob. â... Those pictures. From your grandfather.â
Jacob held onto the girls a little tighter as Ricky slowly turned his head towards the diner. He took a glance towards the only other patron, an old man with unsettling eyes sitting at the counter staring at them, before looking back at the three across from him. Rickyâs shoulders had started to rise in discomfort.
âJake. I think we should go.â
The shorter almost flinched. When was the last time Ricky sounded like that? When he had told Jacob that they should call the police? When he vehemently denied seeing a monster and stood firm in his belief that it was a rabid animal? He couldnât remember.
But he did know one thing. âOkay, how about my house?â
Ricky nodded. âYou go first, I'll follow after.â
Jacob slid out of the booth with Claire and Olive, passing off Claire to Ricky who picked her up and hovered his hand over her backmouth while turning her away from the rest of the establishment. As they walked out of the store, Jacob slid a twenty to the lady at the cash register, though they hadnât ordered anything, and followed Ricky out.
Ricky waited outside Jacobâs car and slid Claire into the back seat with Olive when he unlocked the door.Â
Jacob held his hand on the car door after he closed it. In this light you could barely tell that Ricky had green hair with how faded the dye was. It reminded him of when he had helped him dye it just a few days before his grandfatherâs death. His hands were still stained when he held Abeâs wounds closed as the sight drained from his already cloudy eyes.
âJust give me a few minutes and Iâll be right behind you.â
He nodded and got in the Volkswagen Rabbit as Ricky walked to the other side of the parking lot where his Victoria sat.
Ricky knew something, and he wasnât sure he wanted to know how much.
