In case you didn’t know, Oni Press is doing a new Zim comic series. And in case you also didn’t know, I worked on the Zim animated series right before Avatar, from 2000 to 2002, as a storyboard artist and later as art director. Jhonen Vasquez is an evil genius with a razor-sharp wit that never dulls. That project was an inspiring and seminal experience for me as a future show co-creator/runner. I learned a ton from Jhonen and all the amazing people on that crew. Some of those same amazing people are now making this comic, including my friend Aaron Alexovich. He showed me his pencils for the first issue and they are fantastic. 

The nice folks at Oni, including some friends of mine who have since moved on to other endeavors, emphatically approached Nickelodeon about exhuming Zim in comic form. They knew the show was special to me and asked if I would contribute a variant cover. Here’s what I came up with (along with my original sketch with a nixed trumpet mouth on Zim), minus the logos so you can see more waffles.

Gonna get on my pedestal to talk about this awful show rn so bear with me. I saw an old post talking about why there’s no other angels and all that stuff. To my knowledge there’s no depictions of angels in any kid Icarus media nes or 3ds there is a few in Captain N. YES this isn’t cannon idc tho there’s like barely world building around this. Anyway there’s an announcer for the Olympics in the first screenshot, he has wings they are just hard to see. And another where there’s a TON of angels at a celebration on Mount Icarus. These were both kindof throwaway scenes like the entire series was but it’s still cool to me! Even tho this isn’t cannon it’s the only sliver of angels we have so I’ll take it lol. Also I THINK Captain N takes place after the first game just because it was made after it but Medusa makes multiple appearances?? She can be revived tho so idk???
