Just a 🏳️⚧️ girl suffering through college 😭 I primarily talk about yuri and other topics Im interested in Sometimes draws Currently not writing Symphogear fanfiction💀
i dont like yuri because it's a fetish or anything perverted
i dont know why some people think that its this when it isnt
I love yuri because of the complex emotions they convey between each other
the beauty in their love and there shouldn't be anything "wrong" with liking it
Note: This is an update to the old tumblr post regarding the same timeline but now updated for new information. Here's the link to the original.
When it comes to 「I’m in Love with the Villainess」 the author, Inori.-sensei, stated that there are two story arcs: Act 1 regarding the events of Revolution and Act 2 regarding the events of Revo-Lily.
Even though I understand this scheme, I don’t really think that it represents the story well, especially when there’s so much that happened in “Act 2”. So, here is what I propose to be the timeline of events, reorganized.
The following below is what I believe are the timeline of events. Reminder that this is for those who have already read the Light Novels (LN). And it should NOT be taken as any way to read the Light Novels. If you want to read Wataoshi, just read it in release order and not this mess. This is only a categorization of events to order it better.
Release order of the LNs (in English) is simply:
「I'm in Love with the Villainess」 (2020 – 2022)
「I'm in Love with the Villainess: She's so Cheeky for a Commoner」 (2023 – 2024)
「I'm in Love with the Villainess: Come on and Notice Me Already」 (Releasing 2027)
A more detailed explanation of the timeline below:
The main timeline of events follows the Light Novels heavily. And every other adaption follows this as well. The other adaptions will be mentioned after the main timeline. There are five volumes of WataOshi and they will be referred to in the discussion. As a refresher, the following chapters that are in each volume are:
Volume 1: Chapters 1 - 3
Volume 2: Chapters 4 - 8
Volume 3: Chapters 9 - 11
Volume 4: Chapters 12 - 15
Volume 5: Chapters 16 - 18
There are also bonus stories in Volumes 2 and 3 that are relevant to the division of the timeline.
Act 1: Revolution
“Revolution” is an Otome Game that Rei Ohashi is very normal about and is the setting for the main events here. Where Rae Taylor, a new student at the Royal Academy from the Kingdom of Bauer, has three romanceable options— and she goes straight for Claire, the Villainess, obviously. The story covers Rae and Claire going through the main plot of Revolution as they fall in love and grow together. With Rae’s antics on her beloved Miss Claire. It’s also the most yuriful Act as the ones later don’t focus on the yuri (sad, but it was a good plot though). This act is covered by Volumes 1 and 2, which include chapters 1-8 of the entire story. Note: that I consider that this Act includes the Epilogue from Volume 2 as it serves as a finale for the Act. Although it chronologically takes place during the Interlude, it fits better thematically at the end of Act I to show a bit of their lives after the revolution as closure to this chapter of their life.
Side-note: 「I'm in Love with the Villainess: Revolution」
First tangent in this massive post, when searching online, there are mentions of what's called to be 「I'm in Love with the Villainess: Revolution」. There wasn't a wikipedia mention of this when I first saw it but now there is but it's still relevant. It's the paperback releases of chapters 1-8 in Japan. This is because the paperback releases that we got internationally was originally an e-book release but printed. Japan never got a paperback release so from 2021 to 2022, they released 「I'm in Love with the Villainess: Revolution」 for Japanese audiences. Apparently, it's slightly expanded and instead of 2 volumes it's 3. This is why 「She's so Cheeky for a Commoner」 has 3 volumes instead of 2 as well. Since I do not have a copy of 「I'm in Love with the Villainess: Revolution」, I will infer from 「She's so Cheeky for a Commoner」 about the chapters per volume (since the Wikipedia page states that volumes 2 and 3 cover volume 2 of the e-book release) :
Named after chapter 9 from Volume 3, this details the life of Rae and Claire after the Revolution. Where they work as teachers in their former academy, fall in (motherly) love with their new children, get married, and all the fun slice of life things they do at home. It’s so wholesome that I actually tear up. I separated this from Act II as it already feels separated from the rest of the story in terms of tone. I love this to death (highkey the best part of the entire story for me) and their family is so heartwarming and it’s also completely necessary to the story as this is the life they love and they will fight for it in the next Act. This interlude is covered by Volume 2 Bonus Chapter and Volume 3 Bonus Stories and Chapter 9. For documentation’s sake, the following is taken from Volume 3, where Inori.-sensei dictates the chronological events of the Bonus Stories.
Chronologically, the stories take place as follows:
Vol. 2, Final Chapter: “Revolution”
Vol. 3, Bonus Story 1: “Things Gained, Things Lost”
Vol. 2, Bonus Chapter: “Curses and Good Luck Charms”
Vol. 3, Bonus Story 2: “Wedding”
Vol. 2: “Epilogue”
Vol. 3, Bonus Story 3: “Sweet, Sweet Alcohol”
Vol. 3, Bonus Story 6: “Your Pain Is Not Punishment”
Vol. 3, Bonus Chapter: “The Lady Who Leapt Through Time”
Vol. 3, Bonus Story 4: “Birthdays”
Vol. 3, Bonus Story 5: “Holy Night Festival”
Vol. 3, Chapter 9–11
Act II: Revo-Lily
“Revolution: Lily Side”, also known as “Revo-Lily” by fans, is the spin-off sequel to Revolution where it takes place in the Nur Empire and the protagonist is Princess Philine Nur and— It’s time for Rae and Claire to influence to stop the impending war on Bauer and protect the life they developed! The story covers Rae and Claire, living steady in their normal life until they were called to go to the Nur Empire as part of a Student-Exchange program to help relations. As Rae remembers, this will be part of the Revo-Lily story and they try to lead Princess Philine to her own Revolution route against her mother, Empress Dorothea. However, not everything goes to plan! Philine develops feelings for Claire?! An assassination attempt on the Pope?! Demons appear?! And we question what Rae truly is! The story here is really interesting as Rae’s own clairvoyance isn’t as prominent as it was in the first Act and everyone works together for this plot to happen. This act is covered by Volumes 3 and 4. Personally, the events that follow after Volume 4 may be directly connected from the ending of Volume 4 as it immediately leads into Volume 5. But the main plot of Revo-Lily ends by Volume 4, so I believe that it is fitting to end Act II here and Act III is where the finale begins.
Act III/Finale: The Truth of the World
Following Empress Dorothea being overthrown, the Demon Queen who was looming over the background in Act II finally declares war. She is the strongest adversary to be faced so far, even more so than Dorothea, what’s more is the truth of who she is… Well, that doesn't matter for now! The fate of the world is at stake! With the help of everyone at this point and a new suspicious ally, they all work together take the Demon Queen on. We also see how important Rae and Claire are to each other. Volume 5 covers this entire Act. A rather short but dense act, it serves as a welcome finale to the series.
Adaptations
The following are the adaptations of WataOshi and how much they have adapted.
Manga
The manga drawn and written by Aono Shimo / Aonoshimo / Aono Sumio is an amazing adaption and made me fall in love with the characters and brought to life so many moments from the Light Novels where I believe that this adaption is amazing and sometimes clears Inori.-sensei’s original script. It even includes some moments from 「She's so Cheeky for a Commoner」 which makes it feel a bit more alive. Unfortunately, the is slated to be only adapting the entirety of Act I, where there are currently no plans to adapt anything past Act I and maybe the Act I Epilogue. This is sad, however, finishing Act I may lead to the wataoshi manga to being one of the best yuri manga of all time as many people love this Act overall and the manga's additions only makes it better. As of writing this (April 20, 2026), it has yet to finish the Revolution arc but it's closing in fast and will finish later this year. This section is subject to change for further updates. (Also the volumes shown seems random (because it kinda is) but it shows Aonoshimo's progression at art because oh my god they have become an amazing artist).
Anime
The anime admittedly is a somewhat low budget production where the animation is serviceable but that’s fine because it’s really fun to see the gang animated and voiced. I love the OP and EDs they’re so fun with Rae and Claire’s CVs singing them. Regardless, the anime has adapted up to chapter 4 for the first and only season so far. It also heavily follows the manga which is fine since that is a great adaptation. This is a great way to end the anime as they are finally starting something with their relationship as Claire finally says that Rae is her’s 🥺❤️🔥. Also small tangent, I love Rae’s English VA it fits her personality so well if wataoshi was written in English instead, the VA she brings her chaotic side to life its so fun. There has been no news about a new season although it has been about slightly more than two years since it aired back in 2023. And some people hoped that the anime would adapt the chapters that the manga would not adapt but that's purely speculation for now.
Manhwa (Another Revolution Story)
I DID NOT KNOW THAT THERE WAS A MANHWA ADAPTION LIKE WHAT?? My first thought was “can’t they just translate the manga…?” AND THEY DO HAVE A MANGA TRANSLATION SO LIKE?? but actually it might be better for Korean audiences to have it in a format they’re familiar with. And Inori.-sensei also does consider the Korean audiences (as seen in her PixivFanbox having Korean translations alongside English). Subtitled as ~Another Revolution Story~, I have only skimmed through chapters 1 to 3 (I don’t know Korean so I just enjoyed the beautiful illustrations) (and I cannot find another source for this and I don't know how to buy the chapters either) but like with the only other adaptions it must have adapted some chunk of Act I. Sorry that it’s inconclusive but this is as much as I can so far. Also the illustrations is funny because some designs are strange like the stand-ins for pepi and loretta being completely different designs DESPITE THE DESIGNS THEMSELVES APPEARING IN THE MANHWA?? and Rod looking so fucking chopped holy shit he just has a short ass boy haircut LMFAOOO but at least Thane looks cooler and Yuu looking about okay.
Spin-offs
Lastly are the other works that are canon to the wataoshi.
I'm in Love with the Villainess: Maid's Kitchen
This first and only manga spin-off of wataoshi and it's just a short and sweet one where Rae and Lene work to create food for Claire. Illustrated by tsuke, it takes place in the middle of Chapter 2 where they enjoy their small moment of slice and life peace together. It's not that noteworthy in the grand scheme except for one small reference in the sequel, which is certainly something.
She’s so Cheeky for a Commoner
Claire François is a young high ranking noble studying in the Royal Academy at the Kingdom of Bauer. She thought that she would have a normal school life like she had had for years now — until this strange and cheeky commoner showed up and changed everything… For the better. This is a retelling of Act I through Claire’s point of view. When first read through it I didn’t know that it was only for Act I but it was a fun read regardless. Often shortened to SSCC, this showed what was running through Claire’s mind in important events of Act I and a completely original storyline featuring Claire’s mysterious Roommate, Catherine. It was advertised as “Wataoshi but with Claire’s POV” but it has many POVs of many characters, even Claire’s two friends that were left on the wayside in the main story. So overall it feels like half a retelling and half new content which is great that Inori.-sensei was able to do this (by the way the additions to the story doesn't impede with what we already know and it's a great way to add it). Even when this is an optional read when it comes to the sequel in the next section, it’s completely worth reading in my opinion as seeing Claire grow is such a treat. Extra: there's some theming when it comes to the chapter titles of SSCC which can be seen in my other post here.
R18 Works
Yes. They had sesbian lex. Rae and Claire. Scissors. Or so that's what I think happened. After all, THE WORKS ARE BEHIND INORI.-SENSEI'S PIXIV FANBOX! Okay so in Volume 3, there were mentions of Rae and Claire having "a long night" and guess what at the end of the volume, Inori.-sensei said to check out her Pixivfanbox AND IT WAS THERE IT WAS THERE but I have NO METHODS to buy the subscription despite how cheap it is :< So like I couldn't even describe it is to you. I hope I can access it some day. I really want to see them get on, physically and emotionally.
Come On and Notice Me Already
Officially known as 「Come On and Notice Me Already」 and unofficially known as 「 Turn Around and Face Me!」 hence often shortened as TAFM. This was a story hinted at being ideated by Inori.-sensei at the end of Volume 5 as a "down to earth love story with Aleah and May" and that's quite sweet of an idea. Look at them in the cover above 🥺 they look so cute and beautiful like oh my god our beloved babies have grown up 🥹. However, some people might not like this, but this is a love triangle between Aleah, May, and Lilly. Aleah, May, and Lilly. Aleah and May being twins and 15 yros at the time of the story. And Lilly, a prominent character in the main plot of wataoshi and is about nine to ten years older than the twins (She was about 13 yro during Act I, as I've learned). Oh, and the love triangle goes like this: Aleah -> Lilly -> May -> Aleah; a perfect love triangle. When I first typed this up about a year ago, I crashed out about how insane it is that Inori.-sensei cooked something up like this, but I've read enough yuri to know that this isn't that insane, especially with how little Inori.-sensei plays into the problematicness except for May's own personal struggle with incest. If you're not into it, that's fair but please hear me out. So far, they've done... Nothing much yet, and, for the most part, it's just a slice of life story with the twins at the center and that's genuinely the best part about it. I loved these two during Act II and III and fell in love with them (motherly) during the Interlude. So seeing them grown up was so satisfying to me, even when the overall plot is a bit lacking. It was announced earlier in 2026 that it will have an official translation coming early 2027, so that's great.
Closing thoughts
Now that we're in 2026, Wataoshi has made its stay as a well beloved yuri. With the manga closing soon and eventually solidifying itself as one of the best yuri manga of all time, I wanted to take a look back at the wataoshi media that has been produced. This is more of an information post than anything but I hope you enjoyed reading my autistic ramblings about a yuri story like this.
