cold night; august and suki
When they looked away, that was when you knew you’d won. Was this the first time he’d ever felt like … he really hadn’t? He shifted from foot to foot, displaced from certainty by an uncomfortable sense that he’d somehow misstepped. For a moment, he saw the same lonely, helpless girl he’d glimpsed just before recognizing her as Suki, a cheat, a fake, a using bitch who threw parties just to show people like JJ how cool and powerful she was, someone devoid of good, honest values like integrity and hard work.
There was something missing in the equation. When she shook her head, was that really to defy him, specifically, because he was August Jackson, humorless killjoy and nerd? Was anyone at home really going to notice if she was out of bed? If she had gone four years without anyone knowing–no, someone clearly knew–without anyone caring that she was faking her entire academic career, who was going to care that she was doing anything else?
“If you were taking care of yourself in any sense,” Gus said. He reminded himself of Suki’s many, many flaws. “You’d go home yourself. Where do you think you’re going to go? You can barely stand up.”
Gus screwed his resolve to the sticking place and gave into the thing he really didn’t want to do, but was going to, anyway. “My grandma’s house isn’t far from here. You can sober up there and then I’ll drive you home.”
This wasn’t how the night was supposed to end. Standing right then and there, in front of the one boy she could barely tolerate and had no idea that the chances on meeting him out this late at night would be likely, Suki swore mentally at how she had decided to go out to a bar instead of closing her shut in her room drinking or drowning in her own liquor collection. She was however tired of thinking, tired of physically standing as her knees were close to giving in, and definitely tired of the constant back and forth with Gus.
She fiddled with the ends of her dark leather jacket sleeves; secretly playing at its hem. Her eyes were still out of focus and were reluctant to make contact; but despite her looking disinterested and looking as though she wasn’t paying any attention to him, she was in fact considering and debating his offer. God, she hate herself so much for even thinking about it.
“Will you shut up then?” It was obvious through the tone of her voice that she was unwilling to give in; and though it was meant to come out aggressive and even if she did turn her head to finally look up at him, it came out rather shaky and unsure.

“You’re not even yours,” Gus said. He jogged ahead of her again, not even all that fast and planted himself in the middle of the sidewalk, holding out his hands as if to grab at her elbows. If she wanted a prolonged battle, she’d picked her opponent wisely.
“Preventing you from being a reckless idiot is definitely not one of my priorities. It’s just the right fucking thing to do. Christ, Suki, where the hell do you think you’re going to go? Aren’t your parents worried about you … ? Someone has to be worried about you.”
Even he could tell that she was fading. She was blinking to keep herself awake, slurring and stumbling. He didn’t particularly want to, but if it was necessary–and now, now that he’d gotten involved, he had to follow through. It was a little like starting a project he wasn’t into, but having committed to it, he was obliged to bull his way to the end of it, never mind how little he liked doing that.
He made one last appeal to her rational mind, if it happened to be there still.
“I know even you wouldn’t just let Cassie or someone just wander around piss drunk,” Gus said. “Come on, Suki.”
She dragged her legs along the pavement. The steps she took seemed all that big and quick to her – making it seem like she could escape out of August’s reach, or presence fast, but in reality, she barely walked two meters away from where she last stood. The sound of his voice and the blurred sight of his features got her tilting her head back and her eyes rolling to the back of her head; groaning from his persistence.
Her attention was however drawn back in short seconds. Her parents – her mother, her father; they always seem to catch her attention; but luck never seem to be in her favor for she could barely gain any from them. Hell, the word itself seem to easily and influence her emotions – no matter if she’s intoxicated or sober; the only difference is how well she hides it. “Anywhere but home,” she simply replied; the smirk on her face and the playful tone she had spoke in earlier was no where to be found. Instead, her eyes reflected nothing but the hard truth – people do seem to speak the truth when they’re intoxicated.
Suki Jones stood there in front of August in nothing but silence. Her thoughts were running wild, and there was nothing to block it out. Does anyone care? Does her mother even know about her daughter’s pain and fear, and how she had no one else but alcohol to depend on it? Does her father care that her little girl was left alone to fight her own battles? Was anyone even worried about her? She gradually broke her eye contact away from August; her eyes now wandering around the scenery behind him. She felt lost. There was nothing complicated about that. She genuinely felt lost.
She shook her head – a simple answer to his last question, but she instantly recognized her mistake and quickly corrected herself before she revealed herself completely. “I’m not going home,” she told him, shaking her head yet once again to somewhat state she didn’t mean to intend her parents didn’t care – although, it’s clear that they don’t.
“I can take care of myself, go home, August.”
cold night; august and suki
“No, but I have a few priorities,” Gus retorted, turning steely. He’d successfully rousted her from her spot at the bar, and put an end to the part where she was actively drinking–but now, of course, he’d entered the hard part of giving a shit, which included fighting with a girl who did not want him around about what was good for her. He knew enough about teenage girls to know that she really did not want to hear it.
“I’m going to go home after you get home safe,” Gus said, meeting her raised brow with two of his own and a pair of crossed arms. “If you think I’m going to let a drunk girl wander around on her own–even if that drunk girl is you–you’re insane.”
Suki’s facial expression gradually soften up slowly. The change of her features easily swaying and following the influence filling up her head from the bottle she had consume on her way to the bar. It humored her how one-tracked and frigid August is; the fact that he couldn’t and wouldn’t let her go and mind his own business (even given their odd relationship) made her wonder how long he’d fight against her on it.
“You’re not going to give your so-called priorities up any time soon, are you?” She shook her head as she laughed, her taunting voice just mocking the older male. She watched him carefully through her hazy sight; blinking softly as her tired eyes forced itself open. “But sweetheart, i’m not going home -- and... i’m not little Juney either; so run... run along.” Her speech slurred out of her lips while she made small hand gestures; her slender index finger pointing at him, before it was accompanied with her middle finger, taking walks on mid air -- which she found slightly funny, and thought for a moment there she was ridiculously clever. “I’m not your responsibility, Gus Gus,” she chimed out loud, turning herself around to resume back to the direction she was heading earlier. “i’m not yours, i’m not Dean’s, I’m not Cassie’s...”

“two, the guy at the store said they’re happier in pairs,” annie said, a real smile peeking through at the thought of her pets. they were really adorable, but annie really wasn’t sure if suki would feel the same way. differing tastes, that’s all. “oh– right, because…she’d eat them?” annie squeaked. “well, i’m sure there’s other things for her to…enjoy.”
He wasn’t wrong, they’re definitely happier in pairs -- Suki thought to herself mentally. Wasn’t it ironic? For someone who has quite a large family, that was suppose to stick by one another and live under the roof of their big mansion together, she was instead left alone in loud rings of silence and to fight her own battles with no protection worn whatsoever. Suki Jones was still carrying an uninterested expression on her face but her own dry scoff (at how she had some how compared herself to Annie’s God damn guinea pigs) interrupted her silence. “She’s not there quite there yet. She’s still far too young to swallow up two guinea pigs,” she told Annie with small smile. “But consider them safe. I doubt i have any reason to come over to your place, let alone play pets with you.”
It was Suki. She took a drag off of her cigarette, unsure exactly of what to say. It was easy to fake it at parties, at soccer practice, at school, most of the time, but right now she had not expected this and she had her guard down. For a second, at least.
“What does it look like?” She quipped back, gesturing with the cigarette, swinging back and forth, just a little. Suki was pretty, she was cool, in a way that JJ could never really hope to replicate, no matter how much she tried. But for some reason, she continued to try, maybe because it was better than just being boring, staying home all the time. Because it never seemed like Suki was wasting her teenage years, not like JJ had been.
Suki Jones paused for a brief moment; her brows kinking up as she questioned JJ further, exchanging a look from the respond she was given. “Thought you would have better things to do,” she chuckled faintly, kicking loose rocks below the soles of her plain black Dr. Marten boots. “You know, like spending time with your Prince Charming, or has he already bore you to death?” She invited herself to take a seat on the free swing besides the other, sliding her hands out of her leather jacket with a packet of cigarette of her own in one and her customized zippo lighter in the other.
Though Cassandra was always very confident, she felt even more so when she was with Suki. They balanced each other, like any duo of polar opposites should. Cassie loved that about Suki though. She couldn’t have been best friends with someone just like her, there was too much likeliness that she’d clash with someone similar. “I always have an ulterior motive,” Cassie remarked, smirking all the while. It was true. Cassie rarely ever did anything without an underlying reason. “If the friend isn’t impressive then we move on. But I have high hopes,” she grinned widely still. “We can strike up conversation when he gets us our drinks and figure out if he’s even normal enough to have interesting friends.”
Suki gave out a playful scoff. “Sometimes i question your taste in boys,” she lightly joked, averting her gaze off Cassie while she rolled her eyes at her with a small smile plastered on her face. “He’s not even that attractive, nor charming -- i’m sure you can find someone a lot better than that.” It was true. Suki could never understand Cassie’s constant search; especially when it involves boys who’s completely below her best friend’s level. She understood ‘looking for a good time’ but, no one’s really within Cassie’s league or cut to waste any of her time in Suki’s eyes. “I don’t,” the dark haired girl bluntly interrupted. “I’m pretty sure, if you look at him closely, you’d realize that your boy’s crossed eyed. So I don’t think his friend would be much of an improvement.”
cold night; august and suki
“No, I’m not fucking happy, you fucking kicked me,” Gus snapped, but he was pretty sure it went unheard. Fine.
The man who’d only given him half a glance on his way in was now herding him out of the bar, pushing the air behind Gus and Suki to usher them out a little faster, before liquor board appeared or something. Gus kept his neck straight and his chin up–he was not the one at fault, messily trying to cover it up–and slowly trailed behind Suki, subtly herding her onwards as well.
The sore patch on his leg was starting to throb bad enough to make him cringe. Once outside on the sidewalk, he tested the skin there for signs of bruising, balancing briefly on one leg to check. Oh, yeah, it was definitely, definitely going to bruise. He seethed. It helped. A little.
“You’re drunk, Suki,” Gus said through gritted teeth. “Go home. Jesus. It’s a goddamn school night. You aren’t coasting on your cheatsheet anymore, did you even think about homework at all tonight?”
He reached for her, maybe to push her onward in that vague direction–he knew exactly where she lived, he’d been there often enough to know–or maybe to keep her upright on her way there. She looked more intoxicated than he’d ever seen her, ever, at any party. At parties, he saw her as being more akin to the queen of her own personal hell. It was a lot easier to think of her that way when she was flanked by her little minions and her wicked consorts. This, he thought grimly–and with a faint prick of satisfaction–was just pathetic. Maybe she’d finally learn something.
It wasn’t the first – and definitely not the last, judging by her habits – for her to fill the empty street with her unstable presence and clouded mind. She had done this before; in fact, she had wandered on her own so often that she had her steps memorized – steps on returning home the long way and steps on returning home the short if she had ever gone a little too overboard; but the former route was what she usually took. And so she turned – to the other direction; one which led her towards the nearest park which she would much rather lay her heavy head for a couple hours, other than heading to what most would call home. She ignored August’s presence as much as she could – hoping this time maybe he could leave her alone and mind his God damn business. What more did he want from her? He had already gotten her out from a bar she most likely won’t be able to head back into again.
“Is that all you care about?” The girl snickered; her traces coming to a full halt before she turned herself around, questioning him with a brow raised – though she already knows the answer. “Why don’t you go home, Jackson? It’s a school night,” she retorted, quickly pulling her arm out of his reach. The mention of cheat sheets and the following thought of how she had climbed her way up the easy way (only to crash her way down) exhausted her. It seems like no one’s putting it to rest – especially August; he always had a hard time accepting defeat.
Though Suki had given the boys a look to deter them from their staring, Cassie didn’t bother. It was something she’d grown used to, and as she always said, if you ignore them long enough, they’ll go away. With a sigh, Cassie stood up straight with Suki, locking an arm through her best friend’s crossed ones. They needed something to do in this forever boring town. “You know Suk, I bet you that cute barista’s in again at the coffee shop,” Cassie wiggled her brows at the girl next to her. She grinned, her perfectly white teeth exposed. “Maybe he’s got a friend and we can find something really fun to do for the night.”
A genuine smile grew and brightened her features the instance she felt Cassie’s arm pushing through her locked and crossed arms. A soft chuckle escaped her lips as she continued to beam; her face turned to look at Cassie with her chin lifted. She hovered a hand over the blonde’s and began walking, only to raise a brow, questioning Cassie’s choice of a fun time. “And here i thought we were going solely for a cup of coffee.” She rolled her eyes lightly in a joking manner, a grin still present on her face. “Maybe,” she murmured, entertaining the blonde; her brows cocked and her smile faltering. “If he’s got a friend, lets see how well he does in impressing me. Then, i’ll decide if i’ll have anything to do tonight.”
Somehow, by a twist of fate, JJ seemed to end up at the park every day after school. Or during school, if she felt so inclined, but despite how cool she liked to act, to make herself seem, skipping wasn’t really her thing. So she would wait until the last bell rang, gather her things, and head to the park, sitting on a swing, quietly, by herself, for however long. Sometimes there were kids there, but today, it was empty, and she lit up a cigarette, more as a way to pass time then anything else.
The footsteps surprised her, and she dragged her feet on the ground to stop swinging, turning to see who it was, but just a gentle twist with the swing. Thank god, not a parent and their kiddies, to bust her for smoking in the park, strangers lecturing her was something she hated even more than hearing it from someone she knw. “Oh.. Hey.”
Home has never been home to Suki Jones. Sure, there were countable staffs she’s close to -- those who have seen her grow and took care of her like she was their own child while her parents washed their responsibilities in raising their child off their hands; but being home where she’s forced to be closed in by white walls and empty hallways, with no one to look forward to seeing (apart from her pet snake) was worse than anything she could imagine. She hated the ringing silence of her home; in fact, she treated it more of like a hotel -- a shelter she visits at night to just rest her head.
Seeing JJ at the park was surprising. The fact that she’s alone -- not so much. The dark haired girl was a frequent visitor of the park -- it was one of the many places she’d go to to buy time; as well as being one of the few locations she truly appreciates for it was good place to clear her head. To forget and to be alone, even if lonely is a feeling she hates and is very familiar with.
“What are you doing here on your own, Jackson?” She questioned the figure sat on the swings; her hands dug into the pockets of her black leather jacket as she took one step after another towards the other.
Cassie puckered her lips in the mirror the compact she was holding, making sure the lipstick she’d put on that day hadn’t faded at all. Closing the compact, she slipped it back into her purse and grinned. “We should go get coffee.” She quirked a brow at the other, craning her neck just slightly to emphasize her statement as a question and call for a response.
With her arms crossed in front of her, and the side of her body leaned against the wall, Suki Jones watched her best friend briefly; her glance eventually averting to a group of immature boys who couldn’t seem to stop staring at the two as they walked by. She instantly raised a brow at them and threw them an unimpressed look though it wasn’t anything new -- especially when she’s around Cassie. “I thought you’d never ask,” she groaned as she gave out a sigh of relief. She pushed herself off the wall while her arms remained folded. Suki couldn't care less about their plans for the day, as long it kept her day occupied, and a reason to not head home -- if it was even considered home at all.
it was all annie could do just to give a polite smile, barely nodding in agreement. “uh, we have guinea pigs, but i’m really the only one who pays attention to them. my mom feeds them, though,” annie said, eyes never really leaving the beady ones staring at her– the snake’s of course. “i don’t think mine and yours would play very nicely together, though.”
"How many guinea pigs do you have?” Her brows arched as she asked, the mention of mothers instantly turning Suki bitter from how distant and away her own has been. She does miss her parents and brothers, no doubt. And even if she’d fake smiles and all grudges would be forgotten temporarily on rare moments where their caller id would flash on her phone, or when they’d drop by their home, treating it like a stop along their way; Suki still swallowed every bitterness and disappointment down. She shook her head and snickered at Annie. “They’ll eventually be her favourite when she grows. Although, I don’t think there would be any time to play if you put them in the same cage.”
So the monster was going to grow. At least, he supposed, Suki–or her parents–or her staff, because she had a staff, which blew his mind every time he thought about it–would be able to take care of the thing.
“No,” Gus said, grimacing. “And I think you know that.”
She clicked her tongue. The malicious grin growing on her features earlier falling quite fast, turning into a small empty pout while she tilted her head to one side. “Aw, why not?” She asked in a disappointed tone out of mockery. “It’ll be fun. I’ll even let you pick her lunch.”
She peered up at Suki expectantly, her arms tilting like an unbalanced scale, neither lipstick having the upper hand over the other. She gnawed on her lower lip as she waited patiently for Suki’s final word. A cluster of sophomores wandered by, instantly slowing their pace, what looked to be a heated debate over video games or controllers coming to an abrupt end. Cassie wiggled her fingers in a soft wave, her lips curving upwards, forming a flawlessly perfected grin. “Hey boys,” She couldn’t hold back her giggles when one of the poor boys tripped over his own two feet. Suki’s words tugged her attention back towards the task at hand. Right, the lipstick. “Dark red it is. Thanks.”
She raised her brows as she watched her best friend’s signature gesture -- the movements of the other’s slender fingers and the playful tone of her simple greeting turning the poor boys’ knees to jelly. It had always been amusing and entertaining for her to witness Cassie casting love spells without lifting a finger; all she needs to do is breathe and they’d all fall down like dominoes. It was however pathetic on the boys’ end. Taking yet another drag from the cigarette she’s been holding, Suki exhaled the smoke and gave out a short snicker when one of them tripped. Pathetic. “Not a problem,” she responded, her glance shifted off from the group of boys to the wine red lipstick she had chosen, back to Cassie. “Need a compact?” A question, but an unnecessary one asked merely out of assistant. Knowing Cassie she probably has two in her own bag.
“I think,” Jackie began, fixating on the snake for a moment as she collected her thoughts. “I would be, too, if I were being domesticated.”
"Well aren’t you lucky you’re not an animal,” Suki joked humorlessly.
