my favourite aftg fics (in no particular order).

not a HUGE list because i'm picky but hopefully this provides some good recs for people.

the sun still rises by mordax (basically a rewrite of the series except neil has a little brother to take care of. very canon compliant which is what i like. andrew pov in this is delicious and very well-written imo. neil isn't ENTIRELY biblically accurate but i wouldn't expect him to be because he's literally taking care of a child in this one so i think that's def going to change things. slowburn andreil the way we like it and they have rlly great chemistry)

all this and heaven too by parkerose, @kevindavidday on tumblr (basically EVERYTHING she writes i'm obsessed with but ataht, you give love a bad name and to be good are the holy trinity to me. this is basically just a kevaaron fic where kevin goes to live w aaron after some health complications and pining and yearning ensues!! yeah LOVE everything she writes the characterisation is always perfect and kevaaron have such amazing chemistry in this one so even if they're not your thing PLEASE check it out anyway. they're also just. really cute.)

you give love a bad name by parkerose (MY FAVOURITE OF ALL TIME DARE I SAY. idk i just love kandreil i love andreil i love kevneil i love kandrew and the way they're written in this one is like HHHHH yeah it's kind of just like kandreil but kevin is a slutty rich boy, kayleigh day is alive, andrew is his situationship that he's in love with and neil becomes his bodyguard. they all want each other BADDD and it's SO good oh my god anyway. also @kevindavidday PLEASE UPDATE I'M LITERALLY BEGGING AND CHEWING ON THE BARS OF MY ENCLOSURE but take all the time that u need just know i will be the FIRST one there u better believe it)

oakland by agentcoop (this was just like. i'm here for the andreil. it's an au where andreil meet when neil gets caught by the cops and thrown into juvie and his new roomie is andrew. really like...cute. because they're a bit younger. it's like a friends-to-lovers vibe. and they're not ENTIRELY biblically accurate but they're close enough i can overlook it. andrew pov was pretty well-written in this i liked it. and yes there was YEARNING. my favourite. also just like...the way andrew talks to neil in this one....makes me go insane. like it's so simple but it's so oh my god anyway.)

you made a monster out of me by basicallymonsters (aftg rock band au. the writing in this one was SCRUMPTIOUS....the yearning and pining was done SO well. the aesthetics and vibes were super fun. neil was a bit batshit in this one and i'm okay with that. again not PERFECT characterisation but close enough that i don't mind it.)

and another thing ! we are Not talking about jean's insane reflexes enough. he snatched a flying exy ball out of mid air TWICE! and the second time he didn't even see it coming. he heard a warning shout, turned around and just picked it out the fucking air ! i'm sorry but????? JEAN???? nora give me jean motioning to the trojan's little helpers that he wants a water bottle and for one of them to toss him one and for him to snatch it from the air before chugging it down and wiping the excess form his mouth. then give me jeremy dropping loudly to his knees and causing a commotion bc everyone thinks he fainted and he's beat red in the face and SWEATING after what he just witnessed

Primarily hearing from Neil via the press in tgr really makes the og aftg trilogy make so much more sense because I think sometimes from Neil “unreliable narrator” josten’s pov he leads you to believe he’s like an innocent little lad just doing what must be done but when you see him from an outsider pov you’re like oh. Jean is actually right, this guy is kind of a cunty little gremlin freak who causes chaos wherever he goes

Was talking to my irl about Jeremy and how crazy it is that he could very easily qualify to be a Fox and it got brought up how despite all of that it's so so important to Jeremy's character and healing journey that he was with the Trojan's instead. Like imagine he got the same drug treatment from the monsters that Matt did. I'm not sure he'd handle it at all. (Nothing against his character I just think that would literally be his final straw.) The tough love of the Foxes in general definitely has its place for the people that need it but the Trojan's provide a far gentler, forgiving environment. Same goes for Jean tbh even if the Trojan's didn't exist for him to go to I think I'd still be wildly averse to him joining the Foxes line. Renée and Kevin definitely knew this in their encouragement of Jean's transfer.

I think this really shines in the second book

Any other team would have praised Jean for his violence on the court. They would have unwittingly reinforced the violence is a nessecary thing to play the game and win. The Trojans fully turn everything Jean knows about life and Exy on its head.

I think its the same thing for jeremy. They didn't need tough love they just needed love. They needed people that could show them that theres not only one way to play the game

Jean is 19 when he was 16 he joined the raven line up met kevin blah blah blah.

Kevin left the ravens the december before Neil joined the lineup. That was the year Jean turned 18.

This all means that at the most Jean was teaching kevin french for 2 years at 16 and 17. Behind Riko and the masters back in like 2003.

He is one hell of a teacher and Kevin is one hell of a student
