do you find yourself falling in love with different things as you age? i certainly do. one of the things i've fallen in love with recently is this (see above). no, i'm not talking about camping; i'd rather pluck my eyeballs out with a fork. i'm talking about TREES. my mom said my grandpa also loved them. i find myself taking pictures of them constantly, reading about various types/terminology and downloading apps on my iphone to help me identify them on the go!
yes, i'm strange. and smitten by trees.
it helps that i live in an urban forest.
(i love you, california.)
my lil girl feels the music in her bones. love her so.
scrolling down my tumblr feed this afternoon, this photo from once wed made me pause. it's lovely, isn't it?
just a tip- my last photography instructor said to pay close attention to this pause...when a photo captures your attention, if only for a few milliseconds. this is especially true when you're editing your own work. when you've uploaded your photos, your best images are the ones that will make you slow down and/or linger a bit longer. sometimes you won't even realize you're doing it until you're ready to move on to the next image. and most times you won't be able to explain why you paused. don't waste your time scrolling through the upload, searching for the perfect composition/capture; give heed to the breaks, where you find yourself resting...even if it's on an "imperfect" photo, one that's cropped incorrectly, or too light/dark, etc. it might just be your best work yet.
so many things
(photo above has nothing to do w/the blog post, i just love her lil smirk.)
well, hello again. hope you're all well and healthy. we are finally getting there ourselves; we have been sick, sick, sick. nasty stomach flu. first asher, then reese, then me. thankfully tristan was spared. it was awful and lingered for weeks...just when we thought it was gone, it struck again. UGH.
having said that, there are some positive things about having the flu. watching your kiddos sleep and snuggling a lot b/c they don't feel like doing much else (and neither do you). also, reading. i love to read, and i was able to read so much. down time always restores, even though it doesn't always feel like it. overall though, the biggest upside to being sick was (is) the perspective it brings...we are so blessed to have good health most of the time. a much needed reminder. be thankful, always.
anyway, here are some of my rambling thoughts this afternoon.
do you love reading articles, essays and features as much as i do? if so, this will be your new favorite tumblr. every night before bed, i choose a different piece to read. i'm finding that i've already read so many, but there are always new-to-me ones to discover.
if you like being in the loop, sign up for this newsletter immediately. it's the only one i read every single day, and soon you'll see why. just trust me ok? (i no longer have time to surf the web like i used to, but i don't have to b/c of people like him! oh and maria popova on twitter - follow her if you don't already.)
if you're one of the few people on the planet who hasn't seen this viral video, the view of the iss at night, stop what you're doing and watch it right now (bonus points for headphones and full-screen viewing). it's a timelapse of our beautiful earth at night taken from the international space station -- i almost didn't click on it b/c quite frankly i'm sick of timelapses, but this one is magical. emotional. goose-bumps all over. ahh, i'll be right back, i need to go watch it again.
the olympics! i'm getting so excited to watch everything & thought i'd share some of the links i've found to teach asher about the games: here, here and here. thought this viewing guide for kids was helpful as well, although i wish it were more comprehensive - yes i am a nerd.
it's so strange to read a book and realize that you've already read so many of the sentences/passages from tumblr and pinterest without knowing it. i guess that's why it was such a good read (have you read it?). i'm constantly blown away by the power of words and the way some people are able to string them together. (p.s. hey nerdfighters, which john green book should i read next?)
and finally, like everyone else, i was so sad to read about the shooting in CO last week. i don't have anything to say that hasn't already been said. simply sending love and prayers.
have a good weekend all.
xx

sense of wonder
I sincerely believe that for the child, and for the parent seeking to guide him, it is not half so important to know as to feel. If facts are the seeds that later produce knowledge and wisdom, then the emotions and the impressions of the senses are the fertile soil in which the seeds must grow. The years of early childhood are the time to prepare the soil. Once the emotions have been aroused—a sense of the beautiful, the excitement of the new and the unknown, a feeling of sympathy, pity, admiration or love—then we wish for knowledge about the object of our emotional response. Once found, it has lasting meaning. It is more important to pave the way for the child to want to know than to put him on a diet of facts he is not ready to assimilate.

just saw these images by lisa larsen (june of '54), and i got a bit teary. they remind me so much of me & my sister when we were little.
i'm missing her so much lately. sometimes living across the country feels like living on a different planet. i'll see her again at the end of august, which will mark EIGHT MONTHS since our last visit. it's hard going eight months without your sis, especially when you love her as much as i do.
Instructions for living a life. Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.

heard about this project recently and wanted to check it out. tris and i just watched the teaser (above) and whoa...just whoa. 1 beautiful growing family, 18 countries, 4 seasons. breathtaking photography & cinematography. what an incredible experience. can't stop thinking about it.
on life and work
lately i've been trying to start my own photography business. some of the things i've been working on include: mini photo shoots, editing, fine-tuning my workflow, creating an online portfolio and bio, drafting some of the initial paperwork (welcome packets, price sheets & the like), registering domain names and LLC, trying to establish an online presence via photography sites and social media, brainstorming ideas for marketing/branding and logo, comparing online photo carts and labs, acquiring/organizing camera gear, researching other photogs in the area, strategizing with loved ones...i could go on and on, but you get the idea.
typically, i'd work for an hour in the morning, and many hours after the kids went to bed at night. i'd also spend a good chunk of time on saturday or sunday working as well. this went on for many months. and to think, i wasn't even "in business" yet! i was learning so much and getting excited to launch.
but then i woke up, figuratively speaking.

pretty sure i need this for asher & reesie's bedroom door. pisces in the navy blue, virgo in the blush. water and earth, the fish & the maiden: my kiddos.
the internet is cray cray! just saw this image of mine on pinterest and tracked it back to this post (properly credited, thank you!). so happy to see how many likes/reblogs it garnered! i lost track at 15 pages worth! thanks for making my night, interwebs! #humblebrag
yesterday was my dad's birthday (and when i meant to post this!) -- happy, happy birthday, poppy. we love you so much.
i showed this pic to asher, and when i told him it was his hop (grandpa), he said, "wowwwwww." wow is right. i love this pic; it was taken in bali when my dad was fresh from the peace corps and beginning his life long love affair with the island. i'll save all of those details for another post, but for now, here's a tidbit from a recent email of his...when he and my mom were in bali this past january.
I am not often at a loss for words. But I have been a lot lately. How to describe being "home" again; seeing friends and loved ones after too many years; having a massage on the lanai at Villa Melati on a rainy afternoon; going to a traditional village dance in the evening; generally just in love with every single minute of every single hour? I have been so blessed in my life, but, BALI? Really? (Dewa just brought me a press of dark, hot, Bali coffee.) If the roosters only knew how I have missed them. Oh, and the birds. And the flowers, too numerous and beautiful to list. Yes, life is good.
when my dad slows down, when he's not working so hard, he knows how to appreciate and love life like no other. my wish for him is that he can do more of this as the years unfold. and maybe, just maybe, he can get back on that surfboard.
