“We all go forward, with a presumption of good faith in our fellow citizens—because that presumption of good faith is essential to a vibrant and functioning democracy. That’s how this country has moved forward for 240 years. It’s how we’ve pushed boundaries and promoted freedom around the world. That’s how we’ve expanded the rights of our founding to reach all of our citizens. It’s how we have come this far.” —President Obama speaking today in the Rose Garden on bringing our country together after the election: go.wh.gov/WJ48yw
I’ve been thinking a lot about Noor Inayat Khan.
Out of the hundreds of hellions, rebels, and survivors I’ve written about, she’s the most identifiable. She was an artist. An airhead. A klutz. A pacifist. A musician. An outsider.
When she saw what she considered the greatest threat the world had ever seen - the rise of the Nazis - she gave everything of herself and became one of the allies’ greatest spies. She became a pacifist that fought dirty. An artist that braved torture. A captive that told nothing.
And I asked, as so many students of history have: could I have done that? Could I have stepped up, as she did?
The answer is yes. We all can.
These women I write about - the countless underdogs who’ve beaten the odds, who’ve conquered, who’ve slayed - these women are our heritage. They are our lineage. They are our mothers and grandmothers.
We are the latest links in an unbreakable chain of fearless, indomitable human beings.
And we can step up.

Dark times all around but there are still people out there who love you
Do not hurt yourself, do not hurt others, get help, talk to someone, anyone. Humanity has survived before and we can do it now if we all just support each other. My country and my people let me down and endangered my life but there’s nothing I or anyone else can do about that so let’s try to spread the love that is so clearly lacking.

Absolutely amazing work done by an amazing photographer! Kamran captures the spirit and inner beauty of the women he works with. His work helps women awaken their inner confidence and discover their inner strength anew. Recently I saw some work he did with a client who was battling cancer and it was one of the rawest and most beautiful sets and stories I’ve seen and heard. Check him out!
