SummerInYEG! UFest 2019
Nuit Blanche Edmonton 2018
I was lucky enough to check out some of the most beautiful art pieces at Nuit Blanche Edmonton 2018 - an all night event that takes place through-out downtown showcasing luminescent, storytelling works of art. It was cold! But for those of us bold enough to brave the frost, we got ourselves an unforgettable experience.
AutumnInYEG - Zombie Walk 2018 : Undead Fairy Tales
It's October! Which means things are about to get a little spooky here in the city of Edmonton, and i can't think of a better way to get in the spirit of things (no pun intended!) than to take a stroll downtown with the undead!
The River City Zombie Committee (RCZC) throw this event every year where anyone can dress up as Zombies and march downtown with the rest of the undead while accepting donations for the Pay It Forward Foundation (Cash, Clothes, Blankets, Parishable Food Items, Bottled Water etc.).
This years theme was Undead Fairy Tales, but as always everyone is welcome to be any kind of Zombie they want to be.
The fun Caribbean vibes from this years Cariwest Festival Parade!!!!

Managed to capture an epic moment during Fise World Series, when Joel Bondu performed a triple tail whip and then threw the handle bars.

Edmonton Pride Parade 2018
Better late than never!
So anyone who attended the Edmonton Pride Festival this year knows that there was some controversy surrounding it, with a small group of people protesting Edmonton Police Force marching in the parade for not supporting the minority LGBTQ+ members enough, putting a halt to the parade for nearly an hour, and it definitely played a role as to why it took me some time to upload this video (along with some personal matters that went down around the same time as the pride parade for me).
SummerInYEG as a series, has never been about politics and never will be. The only thing we protest here are those who claim Edmonton is boring, and to that we always say “Get off your ass and do something!”
Our goal here is to inspire the Edmonton community to go out there, and make the most of their summers. To be open to brand new experiences, and cultures, and people because Edmonton is filled with such diversity. We highlight the very best of what Edmonton has to offer in the summer time!
Pride has always been one of my favorite events to cover in SummerInYEG, as I am a very proud member of the community myself!
It is a shorter video than i usually do for Pride, not just because of the protest, and the personal matters, but SIY is slowly morphing into something a bit more new and exciting lately! We’re experimenting more so with our different social media outlets, we now have an Instagram! and we also have our Facebook page. It gives us more of a chance to showcase much more during the Summer time. I can’t always bring my video blogging camera to certain events, but i can always pull out my phone and capture some of the magic that is YEG in the Summer time.
Be sure to follow us on all of our platforms to keep up with the adventures, and don’t ever be afraid to send me a message, or say hi if you ever see me out and about. I love meeting people with the same goal to make the most of their summer!

Hip Hop In The Park 11 (2018)
This is low-key one of the coolest vibes in Edmonton to attend. It’s small, but very inclusive. Held every year at the Boyle Street Plaza, just a couple blocks away from Churchill Square, this chill vibe brings together the local Hip Hop enthusiasts of E-Town just to lay back, spit some verses on an open mic, eat some burgers and hot dogs, and create art on an empty canvas.
What i love the most about it is that every year that i attend this joint, there’s always familiar faces. It’s like a family reunion and BBQ fit with some good speakers, and artists from all walks of life coming together just to have a bit of fun.
This particular event is always near and dear to my heart, because i have been lucky to have known and grown up with many Hip Hop/R&B artists from Edmonton, and to this day, some of those artists still show up to show some love for the community. It was so important, that when i had originally decided to start SummerInYEG the series back in 2015, i made Hip Hop In The Park my first episode.
Edmonton Ukrainian Festival 2018 (#UfestYEG)
#SummerInYEG is back for the season! And we're kicking things off by going to the very first annual UFest Edmonton Ukrainian Festival! And it was nothing short of amazing! The crowd was insane, the entertainment was fantastic, and the beer and vodka? Second to none. It was my first time really getting to experience Ukrainian culture and I'm so glad i was able to go to the first UFest! Aside from a bit of rain and wind, the festival was incredibly well organized, and everyone who worked to pull this off was so friendly, and incredibly passionate about making this a memorable celebration.
Edmonton Carnaval 2017
This year brought another FIRST for YEG. The ‘Edmonton Carnaval’ is a celebration of all the Latin Cultures, an outdoor concert event featuring local and out of town Latin talent, as well as food and beverages for all to enjoy.
My experience was very short, i was only able to attend late afternoon on a Sunday, the events last day, and the event was cut short due to a summer storm!
My favorite highlight from the event was Cuban Movement. A local dance group that teach dance. I have seen this group once before earlier this year at West Edmonton Mall’s Black History Month opening ceremony. They brought so much energy not only to the stage, but to the crowd, encouraging everyone to try and keep up with their moves.
But all the acts i seen were extremely talented and wonderful to watch. I have always loved the Latin culture, and Edmonton also has a yearly Latin Festival, which if I’m being honest, I’m not quite sure what the difference is between these two festivals, beyond their names and one of them being on Churchill Square, and the other being on Whyte Avenue. But the past couple of years i have been out of town when Latin Festival takes place, and will be out of town for the upcoming Latin Festival at the end of August, so as soon as i saw that this one was coming, i had to jump on the chance to go.
Another thing i really respected about this festival is that everyone that has been involved were REALLY good with their social media. If you click the title to this blog it leads to their official site, where all their social media handles are as well under contact. They were going live on Facebook with a steady hand cam several times in the couple of hours i was there alone, i can only imagine the weekend as a whole, Their Instagram was filled with re-posts of many that attended the event, as well as their own. Their Facebook page also posted all the media footage of their event, including yours truly.
A big congratulations to Edmonton Carnaval for a successful first go! Mother nature aside, your team pulled off a wonderful, family friendly, incredibly organized event!
Edmonton International Street Performers Festival 2017
I don’t think there has ever been a time where I haven’t enjoyed Edmonton’s “Street Fest” (also known as Edmonton International Street Performers Festival).
I have so much respect for every single artist out there that does this for a living, whether they are painted silver and playing classic Elvis tunes, or risking their lives in a stunt show, these guys are out there for hours to simply entertain a crowd, and they get paid whatever the crowd decides to give them.
Typically towards the end of their show, most artists will tell you what they feel is a reasonable price to pay, generally, ten dollars per family member, but at the very least, if you can’t afford ten, or even five, they would love for their crowd to just come up and thank them for putting on the show.
This year, on the day that i went, there was a bit of a rain storm, but it didn’t prevent most artists from putting on a show (although, i am curious as to how Street Fest handled the major thunderstorm with strong winds equipped with all the warnings on television on July 13th). All the performers were very resourceful, some had to alter the show for safety reasons, but regardless did their very best to entertain the crowd. One performer, Fraser Hooper who could not do most of his show, still entertained the crowd, and finished his set by saying (and i’m paraphrasing) “you don’t have to pay me, but thank you so much for watching my show in the rain.” - which i thought was truly admirable. You could see genuine sadness that he wasn’t able to do his full show due to the rain, and i’m hoping to catch him one more time before Street Fest ends for the year.
Kamikaze Fireflies even attempted to do dangerous stunts in very wet conditions. I didn’t spend a second seeking shelter from the storm, and watched all the performers who were kind enough to have that “the show must go on” mentality. I feel that if a performer is willing to commit to put on a performance for their audience in a rain storm, then it’s only fair that i should commit to watching their show!
As always, i recommend that if you haven’t done so already, be sure to check out this spectacular event! After all, it’s not every day that performers from around the world are gonna do a public show on the streets for all to see! Affordable entertainment, being outdoors, a variety of acts fit for all ages, and food! What more could you want.
Bonus Video! (From #YEGPride)
While this video isn’t actually from the Edmonton Pride Festival, but it was shot the same week, and i thought it would be fitting to share it on SummerInYEG. Here is my coming out story.
Edmonton Pride Festival 2017 - #YEGPride
Edmonton Pride Festival has always been my favorite festival of the year. As a Gay Man myself it truly warms my heart to see the Community come together so beautifully to celebrate how far the LGBTQ2 community have come from the days where Pride was strictly a protest.
In our politically charged times, many pride parades across the board have reverted back to a protest, especially in the United States. While I believe in the importance of acknowledging the back slides, and how far we still need to go, i also believe it is still just as important to celebrate who we are. It’s important for everyone to live their truth, to celebrate who they are, to not let the back slides break our spirits. There are a lot of things going on that are bringing people down, and celebrating Pride in ourselves is a perfect way to give everyone some much needed hope, so that we don’t feel as helpless as the World is often capable of making us feel. With that said, YEGPride, definitely did that for me, and it did that for a lot of people. The Parade has only gotten bigger and better over the years, the weather was a bit chilly this year, but it didn’t stop Edmonton showing up in spades to enjoy the festivities. So many floats, and so many colors! From Political faces, to small businesses, banks and churches, radio stations, and more. “One Pride. Many Voices” was the theme of this years Pride Festival, and they nailed it completely.
End Of Steel Park, was the home of the after party and I spent the majority of the time in the beverage garden half of the park, getting quite...lit, as they say, and mostly to keep warm because it was so cold! But if i’m being completely honest, initially when my friends and I got there it was a slow start for the entertainment, in previous years I had attended the “all ages” area, due to the long lines of the gardens, and from the outside it always seemed like a blast, so i was determined to get in there, and when i did, i was a little let down at first, but the band that really got the party going for me and for the rest of the crowd was “KLUSTERFUNK” a local, ridiculously talented band of brass musicians who bring funk and punk together in a brilliant way! They salvaged the event and made the 10 dollar admission completely worth it and more! You gained, at least three new fans in the form of my friends and myself. I didn’t even want to stay any longer, because their set was so perfect!
I made my way back home to meet up with my best friend and get ready for Pure Pride! A huge event during Pride Weekend that I have been going to every year since 2011, and this was the first time i was a bit disappointed. Set in the Starlite Room, Pure Pride usually has three floors. The main stage area, the lounge on an upper level which is more of a lounge area with an extra bar, and tables to sit and rest at, and the basement floor with more DJ’s and entertainment, with another bar, but it appeared to be just the mainstage, and the upper level. The good news is that i always manage to have fun wherever i go with my best friend, and so i still had a blast, from what i can remember, but sadly, the missing floor, and lack of entertainment is making me have second thoughts on making it my “night out” next year. I truly hope they up their game next year so i can be persuaded to head back another year. But i’m okay with mixing things up a bit for 2018.All in all, i had a wonderful weekend! Good friends, good vibes, good times! And i would highly suggest checking out the Pride Festivities next year if you haven’t done so already!
Bonus Video! (From #AfroFestYEG)
This girls spoken word from Afro Fest YEG was amazing, i don’t know who she is so if you do please let me know!
Afro Fest YEG
This year marks the very first Afro Fest in Edmonton, AB, Canada. It was a two-day event that started off with a short but beautiful parade. The parade utilized all 54 countries within the African Union, having a sea of flags, music, and people of all ages flowing through Jasper Avenue, ending in Winston Churchill Square.
Once the parade marchers ended up at the Square, everyone celebrated with music played by the various DJ’s on the main stage, flags held high. The coolest part of Afro Fest was that everyone was free to grab these flags as they seen fit, to dance through out the entire weekend.
I have to admit that whenever a new festival pops up in town, i always get a little bit nervous because it’s so easy for things to go wrong on the first try, but i thought the AfroFest YEG team pulled it off flawlessly and pulled in quite the crowd!
The parade started right on time at noon, the momentum after the parade kept going with various African DJ’s such as DJ Datgy, Deejaychi, DJ Big Jay and more! And after a few hours of good music the performers started to take the stage, from Spoken Word, to hip hop artists, drummers, sax players, dancers and more.
My only regret from the day was that i didn’t stay for the whole day, and unfortunately couldn’t go back for Day Two. Everyone who was apart of the team was so welcoming towards everyone that went there, and they truly brought in an impressive crowd. Dare I say that Cari-West is gonna have to up their game big time this year to impress me as much as Afro-Fest did!
I highly recommend that if you didn’t check it out this year, to go for Afro Fest 2018 next year!
Edmonton Street Fest 2016!
So once again i checked out the infamous Edmonton International Street Performers Festival! (Now more known as Street Fest!). And of course, it didn’t disappoint!
I went twice this year, once in the evening, and again on the final day! I highly recommend if you really want to go next year, you make it a point to take in a couple days of it, and to make sure that one of those days, is the final days!
Usually during Street Fest there are three acts going on all at once spread out across all of Winston Churchill Square, and if it wasn’t obvious, all the artists who partake in the festival work INCREDIBLY hard (occasionally in ever changing weather conditions, especially here in Edmonton) to entertain their audience, and i would imagine it doesn’t feel very good when people walk out in the middle of their set to see what else is going on. HOWEVER if you go on the very last day, all the acts come together to do a grand finale GROUP show, and you get to see the highlights of each of their sets, in addition to their full sets earlier in the day. That way, if you miss one act earlier because you were watching another, you’re still able to catch them in all their glory!
There were so many great acts this year, but the one who stood out the most to me was Pandora Pink! (Louise Clarke) and her show “Pandora’s Boxes”. She has such a HIGH energy, and such an amazing sense of humor, along with great comedic timing that i would be so bold to put her up there right beside the wonderful Jennifer Saunders. She really knew how to pull the audience in, and make them laugh. In addition to doing wicked tricks involving boxes, and knowing how to juggle while balancing on a wobbly table, she also is a big fan of the King Of Rock n Roll Elvis! (One of my personal favorites). And utilizes a lot of his music in her act, from setting up her equipment, to dancing and doing hat tricks for her audience, even going as far as to dressing up an audience member in an Elvis cape and wig to help her with her act.
Of course the important thing to remember about this event is that the artist do NOT get paid to be there, they solemnly rely on the generosity of their audience members so be sure to bring money, and even if you don’t have any, they do really appreciate that at the very least you come up to them, and let them know you enjoyed their show.
For a list of this years artists, check out the Edmonton International Street Performers Festival website.
