HEAVY FUCKING SPOILER WARNING FOR HOUSE OF THE DRAGON 3x06!!!!!
YEEEEEAAAAAHHH KILL THAT BOY!!!!!
Isn't poetic that the the son Alicent loves the least and her favorite son are so similar?
I just have to complain. House of the Dragon definitely has a misogynoir problem.
They adapted the dragon twins as black girls. Cool. Beautiful and talented actresses, I love it.
Then they decided to take away Baela’s rebelliousness and tomboyishness and instead have her only serve as a vehicle for the men to express their emotions (Jace, Corlys and now also Alyn). She is not a real character at the moment, she is only there to occasionally move the plot along. Mind you she is one of the few characters who actually survive the whole war but as it stands no one cares if she makes it because she barely exists.
And the problem is most obvious with Rhaena. Holy hell, what did they do to her character. Or, wait, is it Nettles now? They took a look at a character that is described as a beautiful, fine lady, beloved by everyone that later hatches a dragon and then they looked at a character that is some random peasant girl that rides a feral dragon and said “hey, you know what? Let’s make them the same character!” And why? Well, Nettles is a canonically black girl. I guess they decided the characters are interchangeable if Rhaena is also a black girl! So let’s let a member of the royal family just stray around in the wild even if the reason is extremely contrived.
Yes, I get that there are a lot of characters so Baela currently has limited screen time. Doesn’t explain why the little time she has is spent only fleshing out the characters around her.
Yes, I also understand that Rhaena doesn’t do much during the Dance. But there should’ve been a more creative solution to that and not mashing her with a fundamentally different character.
And I’m 100% convinced that these issues wouldn’t exist if white actresses played these characters.
Edit to correct: the actor portraying Rhaena is nonbinary. As they play a female character, though, the point still stands
Being a black female ASoIaF fan is not for the week, they took out Chataya, Alayaya, Nettles, Moqorro, Jalabhar Xho, basically all Summer Islander characters, who alongside Nettles where literally the only dark-skinned black characters in the books, and of the literal handful of dark-skinned black characters in the shows, none of them are women.
They absolutely have a misogynoir problem.

the short gap between vermax’s death and those arrows must have been the worst minute of jace’s life. he lost his revered symbol of legitimacy and had to imagine a life as a dragonless targaryen prince. his final, self-loathing thoughts must have been the most bastardphobic thinking ever conceived of in all of westerosi history
I have a lot to say on the Alicent x Aemond kissing scene about Aemond's quest for love and acceptance, his desire for affection which he thwarted out of fear of appearing weak, his abuse by Aegon and the trauma caused by Viserys' neglect, his idolization of his mother and his near-worship of her just as Criston has done, his bonding with Criston over common pursuits and yet his potential jealousy towards him which made him be a constant presence when Criston sought an audience with Alicent, his distaste towards Larys and his envy towards Aegon who received his mother's attention, his constant yearning to prove himself and to be noticed, his melting under his mother's touch, his desire to defend her just as she had defended him, his finding comfort at the side of a woman at the brothel who looks a lot like Alicent, his internalization of the idea that perhaps his mother has done more for the Targaryen dynasty than his Targaryen father ever had, which makes her Targaryen enough so that he can fantasize an incestual relationship with her,
but I can't stop thinking about just how EASILY and EXPERTLY Alicent manipulated him, knowing all his weakest spots and using them to her (and the Hightowers') advantage, proving to him and to herself that she is still a political player, she can influence how the events will play out, her voice still carries power, and this is such a big step forward from Season 2 disillusioned Alicent whose every word and suggestion was met with a dead end. Alicent knows all of Aemond's weaknesses because, just as the poison drips through, she helped shape them (just as she was shaped by her father: see "A Psychoanalysis of Otto and Alicent's relationship" here). She knows exactly how desperately he craves her approval, how much weight her touch carries, which words will soothe him, which words will wound him, and which words will move him toward the outcome she desires, and she uses that knowledge as a political act without hesitation.
She's no longer running into walls. She remembers exactly who she is. She understands power, she understands the game. The Queen may no longer sit the throne but she's back on the board.
PUT THAT SHIT ON THE OLD GODS AND THE NEW BRO SAY YOU SWEAR BRO SAY ON THE GODS BRO SAY ON THE GODS😭🙏🏾🙏🏾
