I'm attracted to this
Hi, thank you so much for the way you have taking on these asks, with so much grace and patience. I have very mixed feelings about this season. I am not precious about the book, but I was hoping to see a lot more of Lestat's past fleshed out in detail. I am happy to be patient and see how it all unfolds, but I can see why plenty of book enthusiasts aren't exactly happy with what they have seen. Your assessment of the season has been positive so far, but as a fan of the books first, I am wondering how you overall view whatever you have seen of this season vis-a-vis the books?
Two small, short-ish things since you’re asking this as postmortem on the two episodes that have already aired, and since I absolutely said that post-ep discussion and analysis is something I’m game to do:
1) There are flashbacks in forthcoming episodes that give more breathing space to parts of Lestat’s past than the flashbacks in these first couple of episodes have done. I can tell that they compressed his childhood/early years so that they could give more space to later past events in his existence. From an adaptation standpoint, that was smart. I feel that a lot of the discontent I’m seeing stems from people not necessarily pausing to take a moment to consider what difficult work adaptation really is within the constraints of…what, seven to eight episodes on average? They’ve made the best calls that they can, in my estimation, given that they’re not hiding the fact that the present-day rock tour narrative (that the music and the storytelling it does) is a priority.
2) As someone who started out as a book fan and now is a fan of the show as well, I’m going to keep repeating what I’ve said in previous posts about this: they’re adapting this as fittingly as they can to the framework/paradigm that they established in S1 and S2. I’m just not a book fan who feels negatively about this show; I feel sort of like people are waiting for me to cave in and feel down on it, but you have to understand: I love what this writing team is doing in the act of adaptation. They’re being judicious about what they’ve chosen to include/not include, what changes they’ve made, and how they’re pacing the narrative this season. Unless Episode 7 does something to royally piss me off, there is no world in which I’m suddenly going to hate this season. To me, it captures the spirit of the books in the same way that the first two seasons do. Not everything is going to be an exact one-to-one correspondence with Anne’s writing.

It's hard hiding you're a god (…), and once you reveal yourself, you have to be on all the time, and remember every face you've ever met. And everywhere you go, everyone remembers the thing they said to you in the room that you shared. This is why gods prefer hiding in the clouds. There's nothing there… but water waiting to fall.
