In Preston Neal Jones’s oral history Return To Tomorrow: The Filming Of Star Trek The Motion Picture, he spoke to Nichelle Nichols during filming about her hair in the movie and the choices that went behind it.
I was one of the first black women in the country, more years ago than I care to remember, who wore an afro “outside,” in public. This was way before Star Trek. I wore one of the biggest afros in New York, but I wore it with Dior and Chanel suits. One of the other persons who was the first to wear an afro, but she cut it very short, was Cicely Tyson. But when it came time to do the Star Trek movie, I had to fight for that afro. It was nothing against the afro, but the feeling was that the afro had become so very popular that it looked too contemporary. I said, “However, the afro is not modern, the afro has been around for at least not less than 5,000 years and probably at least 10,000. I’m not suer how long we’ve been on the planet, but as long as there have been black people the afro has been around.”
Then they said, “Well, it can’t be the big bubble, so let’s try to get a more ‘Uhura’ style.” I said, “What are you going to do, deny her race and make her hair straight again? If we’re going to have to live through that again…” They assured me that what they had in mind was more of a balance, and we agreed. We said, “OK, women in the future will do all kinds of things, as they have in the past. For 5,000 years and more they’ve straightened their hair and curled it and rolled it and twisted it and braided it and twirled it and shaved it off and done everything under the sun. And so, in the future, it’s very conceivable that, just as we do today, black people will do these twirly-curl kind of things, and point their bangs, and this would be peculiar to Uhura: the pointed bangs and long sideburns.” We went afro, and pointed the bangs, pull-cut it short to the back and essentially gave the same hairdo as in the original series, but in an afro. But Bob Wise said “No curlicues on top.” “I said, “You got it! I don’t want ‘em either.”
To tell the truth, I really wanted cornrow braids. And don’t you dare call them “Bo Derek braids!” That’s something that we’ve been doing for thousands of years before she was born!
Rest In Peace Nichelle Nichols. You have been and will continue to be dear to many.
One of my favorite stories from Nichols is her first conversation with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr:
“... For the first time,” he continued, “the world sees us as we should be seen, as equals, as intelligent people — as we should be.”
Nichols stayed.
Pioneering Black Women | Nichelle Nichols, actress, singer, NASA spokeswoman, and activist
Science is not a boy’s game, it’s not a girl’s game. It’s everyone’s game. It’s about where we are and where we’re going. Space travel benefits us here on Earth. And we ain’t stopped yet. There’s more exploration to come.
Nichelle Nichols portrayed Lt. (later Commander) Uhura for three seasons and six films of Star Trek. Uhura is a character who has had quantifiable importance to our society. She has fans in the space program, the entertainment industry, the White House, and famously includes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Nichelle Nichols went on to use her name recognition from Star Trek in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s efforts to recruit women and minorities for the space shuttle program in the late 1970s and 1980s. Over the span of her long career, Nichols has released albums, written books, headlined stage shows, and charmed at conventions across the world. You can read more about her here.
Rest in peace 💔

Friends, Fans, Colleagues, World
I regret to inform you that a great light in the firmament no longer shines for us as it has for so many years.
Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away. Her light however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration.
Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all.
I, and the rest of our family, would appreciate your patience and forbearance as we grieve her loss until we can recover sufficiently to speak further. Her services will be for family members and the closest of her friends and we request that her and our privacy be respected.
Live Long and Prosper,
Kyle Johnson

Nichelle Nichols has passed away.
Martin Luther King once convinced her to continue on as Uhura when she was about to quit. He told her how she was a role model for so many people and had to stay on. He rightfully recognized her as a trailblazer and the inspiration she continued to be.
(Second picture is Nichols participating in a recruitment program for NASA in late 70s/early 80′s, aimed at women and people of color. The third picture is Nichols onboard the stratospheric observatory for infrafred astronomy in 2017, as one of the first non essential personell to be able to do so)
Nichelle Nichols’s impact can not be understated.
She was the first black woman to go to space on tv (and her impact on representation on TV should also not be understated) but she also campaigned for NASA applications of diverse voices. Her campaign led to the recruitment of Sally Ride (first American woman in space), col. Guion Bluford (first black astronaut in NASA), and Mae Jeminson (first black woman in space).
Without her personal recruitment campaign (which she threatened to sue NASA if she put her reputation on the line to bring in these applications if they then did not go on to hire any of them) who knows how much longer it would have taken to get anyone other than a white man as a NASA astronaut.
Rest in peace Nichelle Nichols, December 28th 1932- July 31st 2022
