like all things out of season - master post
Hello everyone! This is well overdue, and because there are some iffy setting problems with the main WIP post on my blog, I decided to create a separate master post over here!
like all things out of season:
“Why don’t we chase after the falling sun, or catch the stars in our palm? Why don’t we pick flowers by the road or run towards the welcoming fog?” His stare lingers for a moment, before his gaze flits away back to the silent lake before him. “Because the sun can’t really fall if it never rises, there are no stars that shine in the night, the flowers won’t bloom if spring never comes, and the fog is this lake, that’s bounding after us even after dying.” “There’s no beauty in death.”
Log line:
A gatekeeper is tasked to investigate the cause of rebellious stirrings in the afterlife.
Synopsis:
When Shou is sent to investigate the cause of rebellious stirrings in the afterlife, he meets Zhen, who claims to have met him before. As he settles down into his new life and gets to know the various characters that reside in the in-between place that they are stuck in, he learns more about where they are, and what it truly means to move on.
Background:
My current WIP is a contemporary story based in a fantastical Chinese setting. It is a story set in the afterlife, though not based on any particular rendition of it, and my characters have to deal with the various issues that prevent them from moving on. Nothing much happens, and they are forced to settle down in a place that’s meant to be transitory, where they have to grapple with their inability to move on. This story deals with friendships, family, the past, and reconciliation.
While it might seem to be a very serious, introspective story, there is actually quite a bit of humour in it (as well as a sprinkling of Chinese puns throughout). The first draft of this wip is completed.
There’s also a planned companion novel to this that talks about the characters’ past lives, with each individual character getting his/her own story. I’ve started on both Shou & Jun’s stories (but am a little stuck on Shou’s), and in hindsight, I should’ve written about their past lives first before I went into their afterlife in the main novel (stupid me).
Style:
It’s written in 3rd person, alternating POV, present tense.
