A designer-art toys themed cafe in Singapore's Jewel Changi Airport shopping mall is selling an Astro Boy (Atom) figure depicting Atom skating on a skateboard with his Ambassador Atom cape on.

"Astro Boy Skater" will arrive at the end of March 2025 and will sell for a price of SGD$199.00 (about US$148 as of July 2024).

i’ll bet you’ll be tickled to know that before the Astro Boy manga was adapted into an anime in the early ‘60s, Mainichi Broadcasting System TV attempted to translate it into a live-action TV series in 1959, and everybody HATED it! Here’s a few episodes so you can get a good idea of what it was like:

according to legend, after the show finished airing Tezuka was so disappointed with how much it deviated from the manga that he made the 1963 anime out of pure spite

I’ve seen the first episode of that, and it’s one of the worst things I’ve ever watched. It was fantastic, I highly recommend.

I remembered this exercise I did for class last spring and dug it up to share! It needs some adjusting now that I look back (and obviously is still rough animation, not complete); maybe when Procreate Dreams comes out I’ll work on it there. No one in the class recognized the characters (probably a good thing bc my professor might not have wanted pre-existing designs) buuut I know you all will ;3

April 7 was chosen for Atom' birthday because Ambassador Atom (the original Astro Boy manga that ran from 1951 to 1952; it is Atom's first ever appearance) debuted on that day in 1951.

April 7, 2026 marks 75 years since Ambassador Atom's debut, meaning that the Astro Boy franchise as a whole has now existed for 75 years.
