A wonderful addition to the list!
Unsplash. Another whopping huge free images site like pixabay: free for commercial and noncommercial use and remixing; just don’t sell the photos unmodified or add them to other photo-sharing sites.
Morguefile. Big old free photo archive from the dawn of the web. “We are a community-based free photo site, and all photos found in the Morguefile archive are free for you to download and re-use in your work, be it commercial or not. The photos have been contributed by a wide range of creatives from around the world, ranging from amateur photo hobbyists to professionals.”
Open Access at the Met. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York: “Whether you’re an artist or a designer, an educator or a student, a professional or a hobbyist, you now have more than 406,000 images of artworks from The Met collection to use, share, and remix—without restriction.”

Limited use, if you’re doing a Science and need control panels/rockets/futuristic an image search with qualifier site: nasa.gov You have to double-check a photo’s caption it’s really a NASA photo, but photos which were taken by NASA spacecraft and astronauts are public domain, since they’re funded by taxpayer dollars. (This also goes for images of animals archived at the USFWS Digital Library, i.e the US Fish and Wildlife Service, or rocks and landscapes on USGS websites.
Okay updating and consolidating lots of info here; as well as adding links for ease of access. Adding a brief description for some too; as is the case that not all of them have descriptions above. (Warning that some of these links contain nude refs, I will try to mark where possible which ones have more prominent ones.)
Posing Sites and Apps:
Adorkastock. Stock photos for pose refs. DeviantArt gallery started in 2007.
FreePhotoMuscle.com. (translated page link click here) Japanese stock photo pose site that includes buff people, but in funny poses and costumes.
CroquoisCafe. (NSFW, nude model poses warning) A stock photo pose site. You should be aware this org has been linked as pro-Trump. I leave it to y’all to decide if you want to use the resources or not. I highly encourage not financially supporting them and trying to support the individual models if you can.
Line of Action. Fantastic site that includes posing refs, community discussions from other artists, figure study, anatomy, etc. So much stuff in here.
PoseSpace. Extensive library of poses. Some free resources others are paid. I’ve not fully evaluated both, but you should be able to use this all mostly free and get great use out of it.
SketchDaily. This one is one of the better ones out there. You can time yourself, search by pose, clothing options, body type, perspective, etc. All real models.
JustSketch.me. A pose app for any device. Has apps for most devices and a webapp. Customize and pose models/props/scenes.
Quickposes. Pose site that gives you timed challenges to become more proficient at poses.
POSEMANIACS. Ref site with anatomical poses. All the ref pics are of 3D models with only the bones and muscles. Can be helpful for seeing how muscles behave in certain poses. limited to two body types tho.
MagicPoser. A wonderful app that’s great on mobile. Lets you choose size of models, number of them, style, etc. Significant features are use of snap point with the physics engine, adjustable lighting, multiple perspective, 360 angle, articulated hand posing.
Clip Studio Paint Modeler. Free 3d tool that works with Clip Studio Paint. You can import your own data or other models you find online. Not quite an alternative to Blender, but the integration with CSP is very nice.
Egg a Zyoutatsu Atarichan Drawer. (requires enabling flash player or downloading and using standalone flashplayer) Drawing tool for pose practice. The developer is working on an html5 version.
DesignDoll. One of the best pose tool apps out there. You can customize so many things. They also have an extensive collection of ready made poses here. You can use the free or pay once for life and have the poses integrated into the client as well as the ability to export your obj to other programs like blender or smt.
Stock Photo Sites:
Unsplash. Giant free stock image site.
freeimages.com. Another stock photo site, less features than some others.
StockSnap.io. Stock photos with a creative commons CC0 license, which essentially means you can use the photos however you want and don’t have to attribute to them. (though its nice if you do attribute)
Burst.Shopify. Tons of royalty free high quality images. Similar licensing to StockSnap.
pixabay. I feel like most people know about this one, but it features entirely free CC0 licensed Photos, Videos, and Music. No attribution required, but still nice to support a giant site with all this content.
Viintage. Big collection of public domain vintage photos.
Gratisography. For commercial or personal use. They specialize in odd, quirky, wild stock photos.
pexels. Great free stock photos and videos. Only a few stipulations of what they don’t allow, but their license info can be found here.

Lora Lavellan frowned from her place on the couch as muffled shouts reverberated from the hallway and interrupted her reading. It took a moment for the Inquisitor to notice the yelling, at first, too absorbed by Leliana’s reports. The Venatori continued to be a problem for the Inquisition and now the scouts finally acquired the necessary information to locate their stronghold in the Hissing Wastes.
She sat on the couch, in the safety of her private quarters, away from any intruder, enjoying the rare moment of solitude Skyhold offered. The fire crackled amicably in the chimney, warming the sizable room she owned. She preferred to work in here, far off from any prying eyes. The quietness of solitude brought her peace and serenity. And now, the shouts shattered the stillness. Lora squeezed her eyes and hoped the owners of those heated voices would stop soon, but as minutes passed, it became clear they would not cease to disturb the whole castle.
She abandoned the comfort of her spot and paced around the room, in an attempt to ignore the shoutings. She urged her mind to stay put and focus on the words, but the heated voices proved troublesome to ignore.
As she shuffled around, she began reading the report out loud to memorise the crucial information and coordinates, but with no success. The voices rose above her voice and the words jumbled and mixed in a ridiculous cacophony. Lora shook her head and gave up on reading. If the owners of the voices were this furious, then it had to be an important matter, one that required her attention, but instead of making her way towards the hallway, Lora stood silent, arms hanging around her body, fingers clutching the papers.
No matter how many times she had to broker peace with angry people, it never became easier. As the Inquisitor, she had the duty to choose the best outcome, but it took a great toll on her. She laid awake many nights in a row, contemplating the events and hoping she took the right choice and now she had to decide again: stay here until Leliana or Josephine solve the matter and put all the responsibility on their shoulders, or take a stand and do her duty?

The nature of the Veil
I never post meta because I prefer to write it out, but Wikipedia has some really great animations of the harmonic series. I saw it and thought… what if this is how the Veil works? What if the Veil is the dissonance that disrupts the consonant, harmonic nature between the real world and the Fade?
Fundamental
First overtone
Second overtone
Third overtone
There are waveform animations over at Wiki, but this presents a few ideas to me regarding partial breaches of the Veil/thinning of the Veil. I’m not going to go much farther than this conceptualization because I don’t think truly this is how magic works in Thedas, but when the Inquisitor says, “The Veil is more like a vibration,” this is what I think about.
that moment when you ask patrick weekes about this and he replies with “spoilers”
That is brilliant. What if THIS is the Chant?
If you overlap them as well they can become constructive or destructive.
Yes… I started thinking about the Veil being an anti-soundwave which creates a dead space between the Fade and the real world, and then my brain went off on the music of the spheres and vibrations and M theory and dimensions and um… This doesn’t explain how mages open the Veil and pull from the Fade, or why blood magic thins the Veil, but it’s an interesting concept and what if those circles around Solas in his tarot card are soundwaves?
That’s such an interesting theory! And maybe the destruction would be destructive interference? Or maybe constructive with the harmonics. That would be such an interesting take on the science of magic then? The ability to channel energy or sound waves. Hell the rift mage path would make a lot of sense then. (kinda like biotics in ME with dark energy?)
Force magic would make sense that way! I love force magic. Could you explain more about how this would explain rift magic?
Off topic a bit… Doesn’t the name Corypheus mean composer/ conductor ?Bioware’s just toying with us now.
Corypheus DOES mean conductor! And if you’ll recall, the sentient darkspawn that the architect creates lament the inability to hear “the song” anymore. It drove the Mother MAD. What if the Blight is a physical expression of the “Song of the Veil.” The darkspawn hear the disruptive noise and are lulled by it. The song corrupts the Archdemon which thus leads a horde. After all, the first darkspawn were supposedly magisters who attempted to enter the Fade physically. Perhaps crossing the Veil exposed them to this song and they were eternally damned.
Also, if you remember, Justice describes the fact that Lyrium sings and Red Lyrium is BLIGHTED lyrium.
It sings a dark and corrupted song that drives people mad just as the Darkspawn were driven mad by the Veil song. HOLY SHIT.
Solas is a damn Mad Scientist Mozart.
My mind is blown right now/
I’m just going to ramble about a couple of things.
If the veil is just deadspace/ resulting noise, then that would mean that there is no wavelength pressure because of the cancellation.
Blood magic increases anti-noise or the noise, disrupting the interface of the waves. (basically, Noise and Anti-noise cancel out, but blood magic gives more power to the wavelength to surpass the other. Making the other opposite force increase its amplitude to continue it’s cancellation equilibrium.)
This banter between Cole and Dorian:
Dorian: Cole, do you hear magic?
Cole: Yes. I do. Don’t you?
Dorian: Spells sometimes makes a sound but… I don’t think we hear the same thing.
Cole: Don’t your spells whisper things to you? What is and could be, music in the mind of strange, far away places?
Dorian: Not lately.
Cole: Then we don’t hear the same thing.
Mages (that don;t use blood magic) are able to match the harmonic of the veil/ deadspace. allowing them to pull magic from the fade naturally.
I’m jumping in on this again but as me and @the-queen-of-thedas just discussed, the tranquil, who have the ability to use magic removed. The term tranquil means to be free from disturbance or calm. Which again, can be an indicator of this theory. Calm and quiet.
It all makes sense! God.
I’m diving straight into psychoacoustics now - thinking about the lyrium brand on the forehead. Our brains process sound in the temporal lobe (slight joke to myself because time does not exist in the Fade and the temporal lobe is where we put sound back together). The auditory cortex is located close to the ear, and in order for us to understand sound our brains must first receive the electric impulses converted by the moving cilia in the inner ear. Inside the auditory cortex is something called a tonotopic map, which contains in it cells that respond to specific frequencies, much like our visual cortex contains in it cells that respond to shapes, color, light, faces, etc.
What does this have to do with magic? Bear with me. In order to understand sound we must disassemble the frequencies and put them back together. Then once these electrical impulses are received by the brain, the rest of the brain goes to work to process who, what, where, etc. In other words, there is no sound without cortical processing.
How do templars use lyrium to negate magic? How do mages dispel magic? Perhaps what they do is disrupt the cortical process, making it so that the Fade-magic is not heard, and therefore the magic does not exist as it cannot be processed.
“Speak only the Word; sing only the Chant. Then the Golden City is thine”
I was wandering around Skyhold and heard the chanters out in the garden in the background and thought “What if the chant of light is literal. What if it really is just get everyone to sing the same song and boom Veil down and magic back.”
Wouldn’t that be an ironic twist haha
omg @vontigon this is so intense and would be so cool if its canon

Can we please take a moment to talk about this scene?
Because this little scene right here has to be, at least to me personally, the most important moment in Solas’ character development and maybe, what could even be the biggest hint at his own fate in DA4.
This dialogue marks his turning point. Quite literally.
Allow me to elaborate. But be warned, this got looong. 😶
