Yoojin’s words are scrawled on the outside of his left upper arm, forcing him to twist around and squint every time he wants to look at it.

“What does it say?” Yoohyun asks curiously, tracing small fingers over the characters.

After a fair amount of bending his arm around in a way that it definitely doesn’t want to turn and peering down at his skin until his eyes cross, Yoojin is finally able to falteringly read out, “What is the… brother of Haeyeon’s guild leader… doing here?”

“It’s a relief that you look healthy,” Hyunjae tells Yoojin when Soyoung calls him over. “I was worried.”

Yoojin’s expression does a complicated dance, somewhere between confusion and horror and vexation, before he politely replies, “I feel bad, making you come out here and ask after me.”

Ah.

Hyunjae’s hand pointedly does not come up to touch his arm where his words lie.

the trick to writing shj and hyj interactions is to pick a topic and write the most ridiculous stream of consciousness about it that you can think of while keeping in mind that both sides kinda hate each other a lil bit and it's such a delicate line to walk but incredibly satisfying when you can pull it off

"There's nothing you can do for me," he says. His coat sleeve flickers in the corner of Han Yoojin’s vision. From empty, fluttering in the wind, to whole again.

Han Yoojin thinks, what makes you think I'd want to help you? He hears himself say, hollow, "You don't know that."

"Maybe you could have, before, and I was wrong,” Sung Hyunjae goes on as if he hasn't said anything at all. “But you and I both know there's truly no way for you to help me this time."

A magic stone, he wants to say. It worked before. But Han Yoojin's mana reserves are at an all time low; Attempting the transfer would kill him without a doubt, and he cannot afford to die. Sung Hyunjae wouldn't allow it either.

Sung Hyunjae looks at the conflicting emotions Han Yoojin knows must be warring on his face, and something in him seems to soften, just the tiniest amount. 

He lifts a hand to gently card it through Han Yoojin's hair, as if soothing a child. Han Yoojin doesn't stop him.

"I was living on borrowed time anyway."
