Sometimes Scott misses his childhood home. That's partially what the cold reminds him of. Anchorage wasn't nearly as frigid as the center of the state. Being closer to the coast had something to do with it, as well as the mountains surrounding the bottom part of the state. It cut the wind and draft from the sea. Scott was no expert in the effects geology had on the weather though. He just knew that because he could tolerate the cold, didn't mean he had to like it, which is why he's made himself content sitting on one of the couches in the main living room with one of his old blankets draped over his legs.
Among other things, it reminds him briefly of his life before the plane crash, and how normal his life had been. He wasn't vying for control every single second then. It's difficult to remember what it had been like to be carefree. He can't. That was how he made mistakes. Things couldn't go wrong that way.
"Hey," Scott replies. It's quieter than his normal speaking voice, still calm though. His head turns towards Logan as the shorter man presses their shoulders together, and without putting much thought into it, Scott can't help but lean back. While this sort of interaction between either of them is far from common, the younger man still finds himself content like this, with a hot cup of coffee warming his fingers and chest. Right now, Scott hardly needed the caffeine, but he was tempted to eventually get up for another cup. It could wait though. There was a fire roaring in the fireplace behind them, and he was enjoying the quiet these sorts of days brought.
From behind his glasses, he manages to tear his gaze away from the window to make eye contact. Their world would not fall apart if he took his eyes off the kids for a little while. Hank and Ororo were out there as well. "What's up, short stuff?" His tone is teasing as is the small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Something on your mind?"
This move, Emma's seen in some of those terrible action movies that Logan has subjected the team to in the past. (Perhaps not one of their best ideas, a team movie night. she finds certain people's taste in entertainment... hard to palate. then again, most would say the same about hers.) Her first instinct is to argue against itβhonestly, she couldn't possibly flip him without throwing out her backβbut he seems so certain in what he's teaching her.
His enthusiasm is endearing, if nothing else.
"Your faith in me is flattering, I'll give you that," she says, positioning her hands like he told her to. Not that she minds being close to him, under better circumstances at least, but this isn't exactly thrilling.
She doesn't manage, obviously. Not at first. The best she can do with strength she hasn't spent years and years training for any eventuality is accidentally spin herself around and smack into his chest backwards.
"That reminds me," Emma sighs, attempting to save face somewhat. It's not that she's used to bypassing practice time in favor of being a natural, it's just that she isn't used to having an audience for her shortcomings.
"If you get the pleasure of teaching me hand-to-hand, then I'd say it's only fair that I should get the pleasure of teaching you to dance." Her hands on his chest, she grins. "Either way, if you try it on me first, I'll know what to do."
Her attempt was... Something. Not bad, maybe not great either. He felt the effort put into it, the way she tried to lift under his arm and pull it forward with her other hand but he hadn't budged the way he thought he would. She's shorter than he is, has less muscle than he does. During her time with the Hellfire Club, Scott is unsure how much of their time was spent practicing to fight against potential threats. It's not important, they had been plenty equipped to engage in their clashes as enemies years ago. Her circumstances were different now.
Again, Scott pushes those thoughts to the side, and allows his smile to soften. It's not quite a smirk anymore, but he's still looking at her with a fondness that never really seems to fade. He doesn't need to treat her like one of their students but he still wants to instill some confidence in her. That was something he needed as a kid, especially while he was at the orphanage... Well, he needed a lot of things then.
"We'll work up to it then. We could start with some strength training instead? I know your diamond form adds to what you have already but on the chance you don't have access to it..." There's a small shrug of his shoulders. It's not meant to be dismissive. The cogs in his head haven't stopped turning ( do they ever? ). "What do you want to work on?"
Visibly his shoulders deflate at her proposition but then both of her hands are on his chest, and she's smiling in that way that she does. "I guess so but I'm not sure what use it'd be." Always the practical thinker, he was. "Unless you've a got a fancy party you're planning on taking me in the future? Do all of those require dancing?" He hopes her answer is no, but if they were this close for it, would it really be so bad?

It's been a long day. It's easy to have a long day when the gates let you go where you need to be, minus the travel time. He hadn't fully realized just how much of his down time was travel time until it was removed from the equation.Β
But, he's counting this as evening, even if he could step into another timezoneβs morning in seconds. It's evening here, for him, and he's earned a few hours to relax.Β
His first plan of action leads him to the kitchen. He's expecting it to be empty- instead, he finds Scott. He moves past him to the fridge as he speaks, βYou're up late.β
Scott should be asleep. He knows he should be. There was work to be done, and the thought of that always made him restless no matter how heavy his eyes seemed to get. Everything on Earth seemed smaller from their view of it on the moon.
Unfortunately, he couldn't say the same about mutantkind's current problems. Those weren't small, they never were. The gates that led directly back to Krakoa and Earth made it easy to get back if needed. The separation was needed though. It gave him room to breathe, and more importantly, an attempt at being a normal family. He was grateful for that.
He'd already pulled one of the mugs from the cabinet with the intention of making a small pot of coffee but Scott pauses when he hears Logan enter. His head turns to the side, and the small smile that tugs the corner of his lip is accompanied by an amused chuckle. "Pot calling the kettle black much? You can't sleep either?"

"I love it when you get analytical," she responds, retrieving her arm. She's been a teacher longer than he, but to be fair, he's been fighting even longer than that. He knows the ins and outs of combat, and though she could easily read his mind during a Danger Room session to learn all that he knows, he's convinced this is the better way of going at it.
Even though she is going to burn his eggs at breakfast later. Completely unrelated.
Bruised ego notwithstanding, Emma flexes her fingers. Yes, she would really rather not break her wrist in the fieldβor even out of it, for that matter. The thought in itself is frightening.
"And if they block a punch?" she muses. They're already doing this, there's no point in not playing along. "Shall I try again? Surely they'll simply block the other one too."
Thinking tactically for a moment here. She couldn't get the drop on him, he's too quick. She could aim for the stomach, but as much as she enjoys seeing him writhe, now isn't the time to best him, as much as it is to learn. Going for the legs seems like the obviousβbut she's standing too, she'd just end up on the grass as well.
"Is that all you love me for?" Now hardly seemed the time to flirt but in the moment, Scott couldn't help it. Deeper down, there was a part of him that wanted the reassurance that he was useful for more than just his brain or the strategies he was able to come up with at the drop of a hat. He tries not to think those thoughts at her, not now. They would hardly make for a productive training session so instead, he masks this shred of doubt with an air of confidence and a gentle smirk.
His brow raises as she pulls her arm back though he remains still as he debated on how to best get her to think on her feet without halting the productivity of their training session. Scott liked to think he was durable. If he ended up with a few bruises, it wouldn't be the first time.
"Be creative. Aim lower. Look for openings. Use your opponent's weight to your advantage." Maybe everything sounded easier said than done... But there were plenty of options to pursue for a counterattack or follow up. Every time they went into the field, he always stressed that their actions were to subdue only, but that didn't mean their enemies would play fair. Sometimes straying from whatever morals they held was necessary.
"Grab my arm tightly, and then put your other hand here," Scott gestures to his armpit, and then takes a step forward to close a little bit of distance between them. Despite the vague instructions, he holds his arm out to her for try. "We can go at whatever pace you'd like but the goal is for you to use your momentum and pivot your body to throw me over your shoulder."

Emma isn't stupid. She knows that, realistically, she'd have had to do this one day or another. She can't go on relying solely on her psychic abilities and diamond form forever. That's fine.
She just doesn't much appreciate being woken up at the ass-crack of dawn and dragged out into the garden to spar without even so much as a single jab at one of their teammates for morale. (not to mention the bugs, and the grass stainsβnightmarish.)
"Easy for you to say. Shall I remind you, darling, that my diamond form comes out more as a reflex than anything these days?" Emma replies, much downplaying how unbelievably reluctant she is to fight at all. "Though I suppose it is a shame it has had to come out at all."
She's not wearing heels, but her footing is off. She insisted on wearing her cape, because logically she'll be wearing it out on the field anyway. And her hair feels a right mess, which will have her irritated all morning. Unfortunate.
"Right, then."
Emma throws her first punchβsquare into Scott's chest. It isn't like she expected him to budge, but it would have been nice for him to pretend.
He saw the aggravated look in her eyes when he'd woken her up this morning. Scott had accepted that his routine would always start before hers, and her tone in the moment suggests to him that she'd rather not do this at all but he doesn't comment on it. He'd managed to convince her it was necessary and gotten her outside.
"What if there comes a time where you can't access your powers? Or if your reflexes aren't fast enough?" He can think of plenty of other what if scenarios. Too many to list out loud. All of them needed solutions, at least some semblance of contingency plans for him to be even begin to leave the topic alone altogether.
Maybe he worried too much... He couldn't help it.
"It's saved your life before, and it has more potential than just that." Not that he would ask her to run into the middle of a fight to brute force someone the way Piotr and Logan do. If their back line was breached, if they were caught by surprise, she could do quite a bit of damage. He doesn't want to advocate for anything more than subduing enemies so he keeps the statement vague and leaves it open to her interpretation.
When she throws her first punch, his arm comes up to block with his forearm at the last moment, and then he analyzes her form. It was decent. Her fist wasn't closed around her thumb. At least he didn't need to worry about her breaking her fingers. "Keep your wrist straight before it connects. That's where some of the power's going to come from as your arm comes forward."

"Alright, Em. No powers." Scott takes a moment to adjust his visor against the bridge of his nose. The strap he'd attached at the back of his head was secure. He'd made sure twice already, but just in case. Just in case it got knocked off his head or jostled too much, he didn't want to accidentally cause Emma harm, or put a hole in the ground.
There was nothing special about the Danger Room now. And currently, it was occupied. Poor kids. Logan would go easy on them. Hopefully. Scott could tell himself that. There were no robots, rotating knives or flamethrowers anymore. Regardless, the midday breeze rustling through the trees was gentle, and the leader of the X-Men didn't want to be confined to that large, empty room today.
It had been a while since he'd sparred against anyone. Though he supposed this might be less sparring, and more considered a lesson in combat and self defense. Whether or not he'd go easy on her, a part of him had not decided yet. Perhaps he should figure that out soon... Above all, Scott knew she was capable, yet still couldn't bear the thought of the worst happening to her. He wanted her to be prepared for what was to come. They all needed to be.
"I don't want you to hold back either. Come hit me."
