day one: first date / movie night

you knew well enough dirk wasn’t paying attention, but you couldn’t bring yourself to mind his ignorance. not when you looked down at him mid-ramble, realizing he was far more focused on you and your excited gestures, your nonstop talking and sparkling eyes reflected by the glow of the screen, than the film playing on the tv.

you faltered for a second; not in a negative manner—pleasant surprise. dirk’s brow furrowed and his exposed orange eyes (there really weren’t words to describe the feelings that accompanied your viewing of his lack of those dumb shades) sparked with concern-laced confusion. “why’d you stop talkin’?” he asked, and you hesitated.

then you smiled and laughed, picking up your long-winded talk about the movie that neither of you were really watching anymore.

he smiled back, and your heart swelled.

i feel like this is. a dumb thing to ask for but. one of our headmates, iz, started working on this drawing well over a month ago. zey put a fuckton of effort into it and even as a wip, zey was incredibly proud of zeir progress.

however, upon posting it in a particular discord server, it was entirely disregarded. zey felt disheartened, so one of our protectors, dexe, requested it be given attention—it sounds like something selfish to ask for, but zey already has insecurities of zeir own, piled on top of those of the system itself. despite this, someone else simply posted over it again. dexe called this out.

instead of apologizing or doing as was asked, this person instead chose to essentially tell us we were being petty, people rarely make commentary on creator’s art, most just look at it, like it, and go, we shouldn’t expect people to show verbal appreciation, etc., etc.. basically a big, fat “get over yourself.”

that fucking shattered any semblance of self-pride iz had in this drawing. zey refused to put any more work into it and while we’ve tried doing some bits ourselves, it doesn’t feel right because it’s zeir drawing and giving zey the motivation to continue working on it is what will hopefully make the drawing seem better in itself.

basically what i’m asking is that, if you have the time, it would be wonderful if some people could give zem even the smallest confidence boost. again we realize people don’t really interact directly with our blog, but i think this was something good for iz until it was ruined so disastrously. we’d really appreciate any form of encouragement for zem that can be offered.

To the artist that drew this: I want you to know that the detail going into this WIP is absolutely incredible, considering how smooth and beautiful the linework of this is. Even from just the base of this drawing I can tell immediately who it is and what each shape and bundle from the cape to arm is, and to work in this app (whom I have had friends draw in this and I know how difficult something is for me to draw on mobile or a smaller screen than a computer) I have to ask you to pride yourself on the talent and and detail that went into this, because you worked so hard on it and it shows. Please don’t think that the lack of audible encouragement from others is equal to the value of your art - it is rather that those people simply didn’t value what you started on, and their feedback and discouragement is something that isn’t worth anything to you. It is absolute bullshit to say that verbal appreciation is far and few - it’s not, something as simple as “I love this!” to an entire paragraph as to why an artist’s choice of colour was genius is something all artists will appreciate, no matter what, and getting commentary (while not always a certainty) isn’t rare!! 

Please don’t value your art based on the lack of enthusiasm by people who are clearly too up their nose to enjoy saying something as simple as “Oh my gosh! I like that!” They weren’t ever worth the effort to showing your art to, and will never be. I promise you that there are people who enjoy what you bring, even if it’s only a few, and that you bring the entire world to them when you create what you love to do; and, of course, if you do it for yourself.
