What's changeling? :0
sdhdsjkfgh a changeling is a child that has been swapped soon after birth by a faerie, either to get the parent to raise that fairy so it’s less effort for the court, or because they want the human kid. either way, it’s the child that has been swapped for a fairy (can refer to the fairy or human, depending on context, but usually the fairy in the childs place)
why is it relevant to autistics? because ! changeling children were often swapped for identical kids that were strange or weak. most people believe this to be a folklore explanation for disabled children. but! it runs deeper for autism! because faeries cannot tell a lie, they like to/must count things, they have inexplicable behaviour dissimilar to other children, they (depending on type of faerie) will not make eye contact, they are often quiet and calculating (high court faeries, selkies, nymphs, succubae/inkubae - if u count them - and various other types), or inappropriately loud and excitable (pixies, sprites, etc). sound familiar? theyre pretty much a bunch of autistic traits/stereotypes put to the extreme
sorry for the infodump, fae and folklore is a Special Interest of mine, plus the intersection w autism makes me super !!! about changelings
As an Autistic Person, Changelings are one of (if not definitively) my favorite folkloric creature, and this perfectly sums up why. There are so many things about the Changeling that line up perfectly with Autism or Down Syndrome, that I’m strongly rooted in the theory that Changelings were meant to symbolize the concept of Neurodivergent people, much like how Mythology is also used to explain things like Earthquakes or Thunder. I mean, just look at the supposed signs of a Changeling, and the theory practically writes itself!
Some tell-tale Characteristics of a Changeling are:
Feeling unusual or out of place among Humans, and often being bullied because they seem “strange”
Having a deep, unexplained connection to Nature or the Supernatural
Having unusual Birthmarks or Disfigurements
Being Left-Handed
Having a particularly strong Appetite
Being very Mischievous
Being unusually Intelligent, Mature and Wise
Being very Withdrawn, Introverted or Antisocial
Being especially quirky or strange
Feeling unusually Cold to the touch, or having an abnormally low body temperature
Having an unusual sleep schedule, such as sleeping too much, too little, or having odd sleep habits like sleepwalking and talking
Children like them for seemingly no reason
Animals like them for seemingly no reason
Being unusually captivated by Spiritual or Metaphysical subjects, such as Astrology, Fortune-Telling or Witchcraft
“Hearing” white noise, even when it’s quiet
Having a higher sensitivity to Electric, Electromagnetic or Magnetic Fields, as well as having heightened sensitivity to Sunlight
Having a strong aversion and dislike of Iron or Metal
Seriously, this theory is amazing. It gives me a strange sense of comfort, as an Autistic Person.
internet friends are such a gift. always. but especially now. especially. so glad to have you all.

The world has dropped dead, Come over. Come break my hollow bird bones, Pull out the feathers and dislocate wings. I think I’ve got nowhere to fly anymore.
This world has been cracking us open Like bloody cherries on a hot summer day. Fingers tearing the flesh of the fruit to expose Tender bones and spilling red juice. Red, like blood and like hearts. Dislocate my wings, just like I dislocate Every beautiful thing that falls within my reach.
Come break my hollow bird bones. I’ve been born with a terrible wanderlust, But years have taught me that this is not it, For what I call wanderlust sounds more Like what people tend to call a deathwish. Also not it. Let’s start over: a getaway. A getaway from thoughts that prey on my flesh, A getaway in the form of strangers and cigarettes. Rome happened again in Berlin and in Paris, Waking up to caress a face I’ll never attach a name to, Another bouquet of flowers to mask the ashtray scents In a hotel room where it says it’s forbidden to smoke.
The world has dropped dead, The world where I strengthened my wings And promised that I’ll never settle down, That I’ll never keep anything and expect it to last. Disposing of favorite shoes and elegant porcelain cups Because it’s time to go, time to go again.
The world as I knew it dropped dead. I don’t think I need my wings anymore. I might never settle down Or keep my porcelain cups, But I’m done with the getaway. I faked my death and changed my name For the evil voices that used to call it.
Pull out the feathers and dislocate wings. The dreamworld is finally quiet.

hmm.
I am so exhausted.
Powerful statements like these, that juxtapose the condemnation of such a simple and pure thing as love with the honour and worship of violence and death, always hit me hard and stay with me for days
This is the tombstone of Technical Sergeant Leonard Philip Matlovich, the first gay service member to intentionally out himself in order to fight the ban on gay people in the military. He hadn’t only served for Vietnam, he was a career Air Force member in good standing who would have liked to continue his career even though he knew coming out would most likely make that impossible. He’d also been an elder in the LDS church but was excommunicated
He was on the cover of Time magazine in 1975 which was the first time an openly gay person appeared on the cover of a U.S. magazine and had their name printed in that magazine
He was an advocate for AIDs/HIV patients from the start of the outbreak in the 70s. He contracted the virus in 1986 and died 2 years later
His name doesn’t appear on his tombstone because he wanted it to be a memorial for all gay veterans

bonus:
If anyone ever thinks that nobody will remember you or miss you if you die:
Today I read about a 17 year old girl who died recently. I didnt recognise her name, but I recognise her face.
I used to work at Subway, and I remember her. She would come in every Friday with her friends and order a tuna sandwich, double cheese and toasted. I knew her order off by heart because it was all she ever ordered, and she would always be very polite. I never knew her name until today.
I haven't seen her since I quit working there, 3 years ago. But I remember her and I remember her voice and her order and how polite she was and how I was always jealous of her hair. Now she will never order another 6 inch tuna sub and that is really upsetting me.
Somebody will miss you. Someone will remember you. The cashier at your local shop. The woman who always likes seeing you walk your dog. Your next door neighbours. A fellow school pupil who always admires your makeup or your hair. You will be missed.
