I constantly see rhaelya shippers using the "elia’s brothers didn't blame rhaegar" argument, or claiming that if doran was actually angry, he wouldn't have made that secret marriage pact between arianne and viserys. it honestly shows a huge lack of media literacy. first of all, people completely ignore the canon context of the rebellion. doran literally refused to send dorne's full military strength to support rhaegar because of how badly elia was being treated. the only reason he sent any troops at all was because aerys was keeping elia and her kids as hostages in the red keep. secondly, using that secret marriage pact as proof of "forgiveness" makes no sense when the plan completely failed and never even happened in the end. it wasn't some sentimental nod to the targaryens; it was just a desperate, poorly thought-out political move from a man who is clearly traumatized, depressed, and haunted by his sister's brutal murder. but even past that, why on earth would elia’s brothers be constantly talking about a man who died 15 years ago? by this logic, does ned stark not blame aerys for murdering his father and brother just because he doesn't mention him all the time? does dany not blame robert just because she doesn't obsess over him post-death? trauma and political pragmatism in george's writing are never that shallow. elia’s family doesn’t need to dedicate their dialogue to rhaegar for his actions to have weight. rhaegar was the catalyst for the tragedy, but doran’s obsession now isn't with the man who died at the trident—it's with the consequences of his actions and the downfall of the regime that allowed it. silence isn't forgiveness, and refusing to constantly bring up a dead prince doesn't erase the fact that dorne's current political trajectory was entirely shaped by his betrayal of elia. it's just basic literary analysis.

Name something more girl-dad coded than Lyonel Baratheon literally starting a whole rebellion and triggering a massive national political crisis to the point of almost causing a civil war because some useless prince decided to break his betrothal to his little girl. I’ll wait.

I also believe Elia had good relationships with SOME of the Kingsguard. Not to say there was bad blood, but obviously, some bonds were stronger than others. For example, Arthur and Lewyn are out of question. Both are Dornish, both have known Elia all their lives, and both love her dearly.

It is also believed that Lewyn Martell joined the Kingsguard AFTER Elia had joined the royal family.

Then we have Oswell Whent and Jon Darry. Of these two, I think Oswell would be closer to Elia than Jon. Having said that, I’ve always imagined Oswell as a bit of a rogue, but in a good way, you know? A bit of a joker, a bit rough around the edges but reliable.

As for Darry, Gerold Hightower and Barristan Selmy, I think there was neutrality. That’s their job, if you know what I mean. I don’t think they were particularly close, partly because I imagine there was a bit of an age gap between them and Elia, Rhaegar, etc...

As for Gerold, I think the neutrality stems from him being Lord Commander. These three seem more pro-Aerys than pro-Rhaegar. Don’t stone me, I’m not saying they were 100% defenders of him, but there is evidence.

- The Darrys have always been linked to the Targaryens; it is Ser Willem Darry who takes Dany and Viserys away. Jon Darry was guarding the gate alongside Jaime when Aerys was abusing Rhaella. We don’t know what he was thinking.

- Barristan has several lines in the books referring to Elia with affection but also with a certain distance. It is from his remarks that we know Rhaegar and Elia had a somewhat… complex marriage.

Then there’s my poor Jaime. He’s just a kid at the moment. I reckon he did have a bit of a soft spot for Elia; they knew each other and their mothers even wanted to set them up.

I’d go so far as to say (and like everything on this blog, this is just my own headcanon) that Elia had a certain maternal affection for Jaime, and vice versa.

The only one I think might be a bit of a bitchy character is JonCon, but that’s because he isn’t very fond of the Dornish and was in love with Rhaegar.

There had never been any real conversation between them. Not like that. They had been tender, quiet and somewhat shy children.

Acting on their passions had always been more characteristic of their younger siblings, whilst being a paragon of morality was the domain of their older siblings.

Elia and Arthur had always found themselves caught between passion and duty. A line, sometimes blurred, that only they could understand.

Words were often unnecessary. Not out of shyness, but because it was superfluous to say what the other had already understood.

In years of understanding, only one phrase remained unsaid.
