bucky’s  own  breath      stutters      as  he  feels  steve’s  gentle  touch  against  his  cheek.                before  he  realizes  what  he’s  doing,          he’s  leaning  into  the  touch,           rubbing  his  cheek  against  steve’s  palm  and  looking  into      endless      ocean  eyes.                      smile  on  lips  grows  wider  at  hearing  steve’s  soft  laugh   ;             it’s  always  been  contagious.                      the  blond’s  last  words  bring      butterflies      to  his  stomach,            and  bucky  can  only  think  of  one  answer  to  them. 

he  licks  lips  in      anticipation      before  he’s  quickly  leaning  in  and  pressing  mouth  against  steve’s,           tender  but  insistent,           soft  and      passionate.                        they  want  all  of  steve,           too,           and  they  haven’t  been  touched  like  this  in  so  long.                         they  hardly  know       what  to  do       anymore,           metal  hand  going  to  rest  against  steve’s  shoulder,          grip  light  over  his  shirt.

time   seems   to   stand   still   .   everything   in   this   moment   seems   picture   perfect   .   and   it’s   nothing   like   steve   ever   pictured   it   being   .   when   he   was   younger   ,   he   never   thought   that   he   would   be   the   taller   one   .   no   -   in   his   fanastaies   about   this   moment   ,   he   was   always   on   his   toes   for   their   first   kiss   ,   but   now   he’s   bending   down   ever   so   slightly   to   meet   bucky   .   

the   first   brush   of   their   lips   sends   vibrations   through   him   .   decades   and   century   of   build   up   has   him   buzzing   .   he   wants   to   commit   every   millisecond   of   this   moment   to   his   memory   ,   wants   to   be   able   to   remember   how   their   lips   felt   against   his   .   they’re   both   super   soldiers   ,   there’s   no   need   for   breathing   ,   but   he   pulls   away   for   a   moment   anyways   -   forehead   resting   against   the   others   .   “   bucky   ,”   he   whispers   ,   his   eyes   never   opening   before   he’s   kissing   him   again   .   passionate   and   deep   and   soft   ,   pouring   the   years   of   yearning   into   it   .   the   hand   on   his   cheek   moves   to   the   nap   of   their   neck   ,   holding   them   close   to   him   .

if  he  tries  hard  enough,             he  can  hear  the  heart  that  hammers  away  in  steve’s  chest.                     it      booms      with  the  strength  of  the  serum,        a  little  too  fast  to  be  at  resting  pace   ;               this  has  either  gotten  steve  nervous  or  excited,         or  both   ?                     eyes  flicker  up  from  intertwined  hands,        landing  on  steve’s  broad  chest,           examining  the  breaths  he  pulls  before  gaze      finally      finds  friend’s  face.                     slate  grey  eyes  peer  into  steve’s  at  the  murmured  nickname   ;               his  name  always  sounds  the      best      when  it’s  coming  from  steve’s  mouth.                      something  about  that  nickname  makes  him  feel  nostalgic  and      warmth      spreads  inside  him,          relaxing  his  shoulders  and  bringing  a  soft  smile  to  features. 

“     you    mean     that,             steve   ?    ”                                     voice  comes  soft  and      unsteady      from  throat,        and  bucky  clears  it  before  asking,                                  “    how    have    i         never        noticed    ?    ”                                       he  thinks,         though,           that  he  did  know   ;             he  just  didn’t  want  to  admit  it  to  himself,          in  fear  of  being  pushed  away.                       he  reaches  their  linked  hands  up  to  brush  lips  along  steve’s  knuckles,            still  maintaining  eye  contact,           making  his  decision.                      they  know      they  want  this      with  him.                       it’s  all  they’ve  ever  wanted.

the   heart   that’s   in   his   chest   ,   the   one   that’s   been   through   hell   and   back   trying   to   keep   him   alive   for   over   a   hundred   years   ,   feels   like   its   going   to   beat   out   of   his   chest   .   is   it   because   of   the   way   grey   eyes   can   peer   into   his   soul   ,   the   way   their   lips   feel   against   his   knuckles   ,   or   the   way   their   voices   gives   them   away   ?   steve   is   unsure   .   and   he   doesn’t   think   he   cares   enough   in   this   moment   to   find   the   answer   .   no   -   there   will   be   plently   of   time   later   .   

his   free   hand   cups   the   other’s   cheek,   thumb   grazing   over   the   bone   .   “   we’re   both   stubborn   idiots   -   have   been   since   childhood   .”   the   words   are   said   with   a   small   laugh   ,   if   anything   just   to   relieve   some   of   the   tension   .   he   wants   them,   he’s   wanted   them   since   he   was   thirteen   .   “   i   want   you   .      i   want   all   of   you.   ”

bucky  can  feel  steve’s  gaze  on  him,             but  he  doesn’t  raise  his  own  just  yet,          staring  at  where  his  hands  are  resting  on  his  lap.                          it’s  almost  a      confession,           this  thing  he’s  said,            and  he  knows  he  can’t  take  it  back.                        they  know  there’s  only  one  way  this  ends  :         in      heartbreak.                      but  god  do  they  ever  feel  powerless  against  steve’s  enigmatic  pull,            his  force  of  gravity.

breath  stutters  as  the  blond  reaches  out  to  lace  their  fingers  together  with  his  flesh  hand,          and  bucky  can’t  help  but  stare  at  the  way  their  hands  fit  so      right      against  each  others.                                        “      does     that      …        bother     you    ?    ”                                       he   asks  slowly,        fingers  curling  around  steve’s,         returning  the  hold.                      it  might  seem      obvious,           but  they  need  to  hear  it  anyway.                                       “      because         i    don’t     think     i     can    stop.    ” 

it   feels   right   ,   and   that   scares   him   .   it   feels   right   to   have   their   hands   intertwined   like   this   .   it   feels   normal   to   hold   bucky’s   hand   in   this   way   .   like   he’s   waiting   his   entire   life   to   do   just   this   .   even   with   everything   out   on   the   table   like   this   ,   even   with   the   knowledge   of   how   he   feels   about   bucky   ,   he   doesn’t   know   what   to   do   .   doesn’t   know   how   this   ends   .   he’s   been   so   alone   in   the   romantic   department   for   nearly   his   entire   life   .   

he   feels   buck’s   fingers   curl   around   his   ,   steve’s   heart   hammering   in   his   chest   .   “   buck   -”   the   nickname   is   slow   ,   rolling   off   his   tongue   before   he   can   stop   it   .   “   that   would   make   me   such   a   hypocrite.   ”   a   pause   ,   thumb   rubbing   the   back   of   their   hand   .   “      i   look   at   you   the   same   way   .”

ocean eyes watch him closely . they haven’t been friends in a long time - they’ve always tettered on the edge of more . growing up together, there was always something bubbling under the surface . but it was the 20s and 30s and it wasn’t acceptable to be in love with your male best friend . but the world is different now . it’s better , more accepting . hand reaches out , running down bucky’s flesh arm to entangle their fingers . “ no , buck , no they don’t. ”
