Hi, I’m just wondering why you believe in God when there isn’t convincing evidence (at least that I’ve seen) to support that? I really want to believe in God but I just don’t see evidence for *any* god, let alone the Christian one. I don’t mean to be rude, i just genuinely want to know, especially bc you went through med school and are so educated on evolution and science. thanks :)

I’ve discussed this previously on the blog.

To me the whole point of any faith is to believe in what you can’t see or prove tangibly. I can’t prove that God exists in a way that you can examine scientifically. I can show how my life changed when I let God have control of it. That’s as tangible as I can make it. My life and the lives of people I know are all the evidence I need.

However, I also believe in the real, tangible, historical person of Jesus Christ who was both God and man at the same time. I can’t explain that scientifically either, but I believe it. I’ve walked where he walked and have seen the places described in the Bible, and that’s real. I believe in the miracles described in the Bible even though I didn’t see them and I can’t explain them. If you want me to, I could sit and talk to you all about the proven historical details of the Bible or about how my faith lines up with the science I know, but that’s not why I believe. It certainly bolsters my faith but it isn’t the reason for my faith. I believe these things because if God can step into my life and save me and direct my life and make some things possible that I thought were impossible, then I believe he also did some cool stuff thousands of years ago.

As an example of how God works in our lives, I will share this story of something that happened recently that my mom passed on to me literally this morning. I’ll put it behind a read more link for folks who don’t feel like scrolling.

90+ grumpy old man (who has been objecting to all medical advice I’ve given so far): Ok, doc, you seem like an honest guy, so tell me the truth – isn’t my blood thinner made out of rat poison?

Cranquis: Basically, yes. When you give warfarin to rats, their blood gets too thin, and then they bleed internally and die.

Man: I KNEW IT! And you’re the first doctor to admit it when I ask. So I guess I’ll do whatever you say now.

Angels

Joe's brother Jimmy also married a Ruth. However, Little Ruth was the complete opposite in every way. I called her Auntie and my little sister called her Ma. Auntie kept both of us, during our respective infant and toddler hoods.

Today, I was thinking about these two wonderful Angels. It struck me that Auntie must have known that Sammie was an Angel sent from God... Why else would she have peeled that little girl's grapes for her?

Auntie kept many of us children over the years and we all ate our grapes skin on! Auntie knew a secret.
