Sitting in the hallway floor of your dorm building, well past 2 AM on a Wednesday morning, you were beginning to wonder what you did to deserve this. Soaking wet from the rain, missing a shoe, and locked out of your dorm room, you were pleading with every force in the universe for your roommate to somehow miraculously return early from Spring Break to let you into the room. Your phone and keys were locked in the bar that you and your friends left hours before, and you were effectively locked out until you could get in touch with the housing office in the morning. What a wonderful time to be alive. 

You debated it in your head; maybe it was the time you laughed at your roommate for falling down the stairs. Or when you refused to give your brother twenty dollars for gas money. Most prominent in your thoughts, though, was when you’d become fed up with your neighbor and hammered on his door to scream at him over the endless noise he made day-in and day-out. Maybe if you had a smidge more patience, you would be able to knock on his door and at least ask for a towel, considering he was the only other person on your floor that stayed at school for break. 

A heavy sigh departed your lips as you shifted, leaning your head back against the wall. You closed your eyes, though it did little against the fluorescents in the hallway. A headache pulsed dully at your temples, your mouth dry and your limbs starting to ache after the long walk back to campus. Sitting here, abandoned and helpless was its own unique form of torture. You knew your out. The door beside yours stood there, the thin wood taunting you in its frame. The man behind it, Jake Kiszka, was your natural enemy. The complete and utter bane of your existence. It wasn’t only that he was a pest of a neighbor– fucking and shouting and playing music at all odd hours– he was also argumentative, arrogant, and an absolute fuckboy.

Even before you’d marched to his door and practically beat a hole in it, his reputation preceded him. The amount of girls in your lectures you heard whispering about him was unbelievable. He was the campus heartbreaker. True that he was fantastically attractive, and a talented musician. But from what you heard, and experienced… he was a complete asshole. You’d had your share of questionable interactions with him, and wanted absolutely nothing at all to do with Jake Kiszka. 

The last hour sitting in the hallway gave you plenty of time to think over your situation. It was hard to believe that you weren’t getting your divine retribution. Your only escape from sitting in this misery for the next six hours was the guy you absolutely despised. As you sobered up, you understood clearly that you were being bullheaded. Bratty. Stubborn. As you were weighing your options, the sound of footsteps jostled you from your thoughts. You peeled your eyes open, blinking at the brightness as they adjusted. Standing before you was exactly the person you didn’t want to see. Jake peered at you, lifting an eyebrow as he examined your disheveled frame crumpled on the floor. 

“What are you doing?” he asked, sounding halfway concerned. 

You laughed humorlessly, running a hand over your face. You refused to meet his eyes, instead focusing in on his booted feet. You were sure you were being punished now. This was no coincidence that you were literally at his feet, having to ask for help.

“I’m locked out,” you muttered, voice bitter. “Left my fucking phone and keys at some shitty bar. What are you doing?” 

The challenge in your voice didn’t go unnoticed. The corner of his mouth quirked up, a flash of amusement flickering behind his dark eyes. He took a step back, leaning against the wall across from you. His arms flexed as he crossed them over his chest, muscles stretching beneath the skin. You tore your eyes away. 

“It’s spring break,” he said, as if that explained it all.

“Hmmm,” you said, nodding. “Off fucking some sorority sister, then?”

Antagonizing him was the last thing you should be doing right now. You were actively aware of that, and didn’t care. A dark chuckle left his lips. 

“What’s it to you?”

You shrugged. “Just glad it was in someone else’s room, this time,” you conceded. “Would’ve been a good night for me to get some sleep.”

He laughed again, shaking his head. Jake maintained his cool facade, seeming unbothered by your digs. 

“Well,” he sighed, “not that it’s any of your business, but I took a day trip to see my family.”

You swallowed hard. You almost felt a little bad for assuming he was off ruining another girl’s life. You huffed, wringing your hands in your lap. His eyes bore into you, dark irises still flashing amusement as he stared at your pitiful form on the ground. He was pleased, as you knew he would be. He expected the universe to repay you this retribution, and here he was to witness it all. 

“Can’t you just leave me alone?” You broke the silence, skin crawling with discomfort.

“Why do you hate me so much?” he wondered. A rage-inducing smirk spread over his lips. You gave him a dark look.

“You really don’t know?” A frown settled on your features. It wasn’t entirely the fact that he was the campus playboy, nor that he was obnoxiously loud with his nighttime escapades, but also that he had humiliated you in front of a dozen people. It was a touchy subject, and there were very few people you brought it up with. Of course, he didn’t remember it as vividly as you did. He was popular, well-liked, and not interested in the likes of you. 

“No, Y/N, I don’t,” he said. He sounded truthful, and that made things worse.

You laughed, the hollow, bitter noise echoing through the empty hall. “You made a fucking joke out of me last year, Jake,” you said darkly. “Back at that stupid fucking frat party.”

“You do realize how many frat parties I’ve been to, right? You’re gonna have to be more specific…”

“That Lambda Omega Phi Halloween party,” you muttered, face flushing at the memory. “I don’t know why I even went in the first place. Somehow, Maddie convinced me, and look at me now…” 

He frowned, looking seriously confused. “I still don’t follow,” he said. 

You forced your gaze up to meet his eyes, shaking your head. You’d cried over the humiliation before, but now there were no more tears. Only anger. You knew he could be an asshole, but you had never expected him to do anything to you of all people. You always kept to yourself, minding your own business. 

“It was late,” you began, “pretty much everyone had gone home. There were maybe ten or fifteen of us left. Someone suggested we spin the bottle. Make it a sort of spin the bottle, seven minutes in heaven situation. I was uncomfortable to begin with… Imagine how I felt when you looked at me for a second, and laughed. “That doesn’t make it any better.”

“I know… I can’t say anything to make things better. I will say that I’m sorry, and I mean that.” 

“Okay,” you replied. You didn’t want to talk about it anymore. Talking about it made it more real in your memory. It made things come flashing back: the sound of the laughter around you, the teasing smile on Jake’s lips, your stomach dropping as you realized you were once again the butt of someone’s joke. Once you graduated high school, you thought you were completely done with bullies, but you’d learned the truth that night. You would never be able to escape being teased for your timidity.

You had decided to tag along with Sam today, knew he was going to be fitted for a new tour suit but opted to go so you weren’t stuck at home alone. He was on edge all morning, his leg constantly bouncing as the wardrobe tech talked through each piece they had picked. 

He hemmed and hawed at each of the outfits none of them catching his eye the way he had hoped until they pulled over the last suit. An all black suit with a barely visible pattern over a red ribbed sweater - one you knew he’d never opt to wear. 

Sam changed quickly, stepping out from behind the curtain with his white claw in one hand, his other tucked into the pocket of the pants. You watched him intently, pulling out your phone to snap a quick picture for your own collection as his eyes snapped to the wardrobe tech, a quiet ‘what’ slipping past his lips.

“Dada look!” Daisy’s high voice barely crested the sound of the wind coming off the ocean. She stood, her tiny fist thrusted into the air with a large seashell clutched between her little fingers. The lazy smile spread across her face was the mirror-image of Sam as he stood beside you, his shadow cast down over your figure as you relaxed on the blanket in the sand. 

He laughed softly, shielding his eyes from the sun with a hand across his brow. “Wow, that’s a big shell!” He said proudly. The pair of you watched with soft eyes as she dropped it into the pink bucket at the edge of the water, where she was keeping all of her spoils. She had been sure to show the two of you all of her little treasures: dozens of colorful shells, a sand dollar, some seaweed, and even a bottle cap she found floating along. You oohed and ahhed at every little thing she brought along, relishing in the proud grin that danced across her sweet face.

She went back to searching for more shells, while Sam glanced down at your relaxed form. “Feeling okay, sweet girl?” 

“I’m all right,” you said, brushing a hand over your flushed face. He peered at you, a slight worried look in his eye. He knelt down and retrieved a bottle of water from the cooler, pressing it against your cheek as he watched your expression. 

“You’re burning up out here,” he said, noticing the heat coloring your cheeks, 

“Sam,” you said, grasping his hand and taking the water bottle from him. You placed a kiss on his palm, smiling softly. “Stop worrying. I’m okay.”

“No nausea or anything?”

You shook your head. This was the first time in weeks that you felt like your normal self. You’d been feeling extremely nauseated for about two weeks before you finally broke down and took a pregnancy test. The two little lines had sent a jolt through you. You knew Sam would be excited. It was as if he were put on Earth solely to be the best husband and father. But the truth was, you weren’t sure how you felt about it. You loved Daisy with everything in you, and adored being her mother. However, somewhere along the way, you’d solidified the idea that your family was complete–just the three of you, forever and always.

“The baby’s noticed,” he said, sitting down in front of you and pulling your feet into his lap. Absent-mindedly, he massaged the skin of your legs and feet, making you sigh. This pregnancy was especially rough, compared to the breeze that Daisy’s had been. You felt like you were getting all of the side effects and sickness from both of your pregnancies rolled into one. You’d been confined to your bed or the bathroom floor for the past two months. It would be a wonder if Daisy didn’t notice.

“I know,” you sighed, brushing your hair out of your eyes. Then, you had a thought, “How are we going to break it to her?”

Sam turned away from watching Daisy, to watch you for a second. He laughed gently, “You make it sound like she’s going to be devastated.”

You smiled, “I mean–what if she is? She–she won’t be the baby anymore,” you said, and a wave of sadness washed over you. A sudden wave of emotion slammed over you, and you felt yourself tearing up. You tried to blink them away, but the tears had a mind of their own, and you started to cry. Stupid hormones. 

“Hey,” The softness in Sam’s voice engulfed you, along with his arms as he pulled you into his lap. He placed a gentle kiss on your temple, rubbing a soothing hand up and down your back. Despite the burning heat of his skin, you leaned into him. You muffled your cries into his shoulder, embarrassed to be crying over something so small. 

“She’s still our baby, my love,” Sam said softly, his voice dripping honey. He brushed the hair slicked down on your forehead off of your face, and met your eyes. The warmth of his gaze eased you, your tears slowly drying as he hushed and soothed you. 

“But she’s gonna be a big sister,” you said, tearfully. “She’s three years old already, and she’s not gonna be the baby anymore…” The last part came as a whisper, and you choked back more sobs that threatened to spill out. 

“She won’t be the baby. She’ll be one of our babies. Isn’t that better, honey? We’ll have two babies,” he hooked a finger beneath your chin, titling your face up towards his. 

You brushed your tears away, nodding, trying to force yourself to pull it together. Taking a shaky breath, you rested your head on his shoulder and watched Daisy playing in the water. She appeared to be singing quietly, cradling a handful of shells in her hand. She placed them gently into her bucket, and straightened up to glance at the two of you, as if checking to ensure that you were still there. It was one of her quirks at home, too; if it got too quiet after she went to bed, she would tiptoe out of her room just to be sure that you and Sam were still around. Whenever she skipped ahead of you at the park, she was sure to turn around every few seconds to keep an eye on you. She kept track of you as much as you did her. 

She met your eyes, and you forced a smile and a wave. The little girl grabbed the bucket, lugging it up the sand towards the two of you. Her lifejacket and bucket weighed her down slightly, and Sam giggled at the sight of her struggling towards you. 

As she approached, she placed her bucket beside you on the sand. She began to rifle through the shells, searching for something. Once she found it, she placed it delicately in her hand and held the shell out to you. The pink-toned, scalloped shell glittered in the late afternoon light, and she beamed at you as she offered it to you.

“It’s for you, Mommy!” she said excitedly, placing it into your cupped hands. “It has magical powers,” she dropped her voice to a whisper, looking at you as if she were telling you a crucial secret.

“Wow, honeybee,” you said, smiling gently. “It’s beautiful, just like my sweet girl…” You brushed her hair out of her eyes. It was sunbleached, lighter than it usually was. With the natural highlights and soft glow from being out in the sun, she looked even more like Sam. Your heart swelled with affection.

“What kind of magic powers does it have, Daisy Lou?” Sam asked, peering over at the shell with a proud smile on his face.

“I can’t tell you,” she said. Her expression shifted to mischief, “It’s a secret.”

“A secret?” Sam gasped dramatically, clutching his chest.

Daisy giggled, and you peered at Sam, feigning the same drama. “Uh oh, you know what that means…”

“A secret for a secret,” Sam and Daisy said in unison, the latter breaking out into giggles as you reached out to tickle her side. It was something she’d come up with recently, trading silly secrets in exchange for one from you or Sam. Sam adored playing along, and you quickly grew fond of listening to them trading their ‘secrets.’

“Who’s first?” you prompted.

“Dada, you first!” Daisy insisted.

Sam shook his head, “No way, Miss Daisy,” he said, “Dada went first last time, don’t you remember?”

She wrinkled her nose, but huffed in defeat. “Fine,” she said sassily, sticking her tongue out at Sam before leaning down to tell her secret. “The shell’s magic powers will make Mommy feel better,” she said quietly. You smiled sadly, knowing she had been worried about you for all these miserable weeks. 

“Wow,” said Sam, glancing between the two of you. “I think it’s working already,” he whispered, nodding towards your smiling face.

“It’s true,” you agreed, nodding. “I feel much better.”

“I knew it would work,” she said, matter-of-factly. Then, she turned to Sam expectantly. “Your turn, Dada.”

He smiled, then glanced at you as if asking for permission. You nodded. Now was as good a time as any.

“All right, but this is a very important secret,” Sam said, playing up the drama. You rolled your eyes. He always had to put on the theatrics for Daisy. She was giggling already, prepared for Sam to tell her something outrageous. 

“I’m good at holding secrets,” Daisy said. You watched her with stars in your eyes, adoring her little quirks and phrases. Even when Uncle Jake once tried explaining to her that the phrase was ‘keeping a secret,’ she refused to change it. You supposed holding a secret described it much better, anyway. You always held her little secrets close to your heart.

“You are, honeybee,” you agreed. You brushed some sand off of your magical shell, and watched her eyes widen as Sam began to speak again.

“Well, you know how Mommy has been really sick lately?”

Daisy nodded, looking at you briefly. She quickly returned her attention to Sam, enraptured.

“It’s because she has a tiny little baby in her tummy,” Sam said. He placed a large hand against your stomach, rubbing soft circles into your skin with his thumb. “Right here.”

“A baby in your tummy?” She blinked at you, her eyes as wide as saucers. “How did you get a baby in your tummy?”

You laughed, shaking your head. “Well, I guess it was some kind of magic, Daisy Lou,” you said, winking at Sam. He grinned, leaning over and planting a chaste kiss on your lips.

“But you didn’t eat it?”

You wrinkled your nose, “No way.”

“How long is the baby gonna be in there?” She stepped closer, leaning down to peer at your stomach. You were barely showing, not enough for anyone else to notice and especially not enough for Daisy to notice. She screwed up her eyebrows and stared hard as she reached out to place her hand next to Sam’s. Her touch barely ghosted your skin, delicate as butterfly kisses. 

“Nine months,” you said.

“Then you’ll have a little brother or sister,” Sam continued. “Would you like that?”

She hummed to herself, mulling it over. “And I’ll be a big sister?” 

“You sure will.”

“Wow,” she said, straightening back up with a sparkle in her eyes. “Where will the baby sleep?”

You smiled. “Probably in our room, at least for a little while… We’ll figure it out.”

“And what will we name the baby?”

“We have plenty of time to decide,” Sam said. Daisy still seemed to be processing the information, though you were glad she seemed to be taking it well. A tiny smile brightened her expression as she looked curiously at your stomach.

“I hope it’s a baby sister,” she said. She peered at you as if she were going to decipher it just by looking at your stomach. “Maybe, we can name her Ocean…” Daisy waved her arms, gesturing to the expanse of water behind her. 

“That’s a beautiful name,” Sam said. His expression was flooded with warmth and affection, his eyes glowing as he watched Daisy process the fact that she would be a big sister soon. You leaned into him, smiling as Daisy stared out into the water. 

“I think Ocean’s pretty,” you agreed. “That’s where our little piece of magic came from…”

You stared at the shiny pink shell in your palm and felt at peace. Maybe you were meant to be a family of four after all.

summary: this one's more about the vibes if i'm being honest, but it's about sam and the reader spending time together at a botanical garden.

author's note: i'm not sure how i feel about this one, but i couldn't get the idea out of my head, so i figured i'd share it with y'all. i feel like the idea could've been a bit more fleshed out, so i might come back and edit this later. we'll just see how it goes. also sorry that this one isn't quite as happy as my other fics/blurbs. also it was inspired by and named after the song "mama you been on my mind", specifically the jeff buckley cover, which i'll link below.

Laughter rang through Sam’s ears as you ran ahead of him, giggling and ushering him to follow you. As he caught up, he saw you pointing to a bush of tiny pink flowers. They smelled like heaven and were probably the prettiest plant in the whole garden. Sam watched you as you stared at them, unable to stop the smile that spread across his features.

You eventually turned to look back at him, asking “What’s got you all smiley?” as a quizzical look overcame your face.

“Nothing,” he replied, giving his head a small shake, “It’s just a really nice day.”

You looked at the sky above you and let a slight grin take hold, “Yeah, it really is. I’ve been hoping for weather like this.”

“Me too,” he agreed, “Just enough sun to not be cold, but enough clouds to not sweat our asses off.”

You let out a small giggle. “Yep. Couldn’t have said it better myself, Sammy.” He smiled in return, and you let a moment of silence fall between you, happy to just be in each other’s company. You looked at the different plants and flowers as you wandered down the garden’s path, occasionally pointing one out to Sam. A butterfly flew by at one point, landing on your head just long enough for him to snap a few pictures.

"How'd they look?" you asked eagerly.

"I think they're gonna come out beautiful," he replied, "Your pictures always do."

A small blush formed across your cheeks. "Thank you, Sammy," you giggled, "You're always so sweet."

He quickly shushed you, placing a finger over his lips. "Don't say that so loud," he said in a joking whisper, "I have a rock star reputation to uphold."

You rolled your eyes. "Whatever you say, Mr. Rockstar. I still think you're sweet"

A small chuckle left his lips, and then the comfortable silence returned as you two strolled along. You went back to looking at the foliage in quiet wonder while Sam could barely keep his eyes off of you. He focused on every excited breath you took and every plant that you seemed to take special note of. He finally broke the silence when your path forked into three directions, asking “So, where to next?”

After a brief moment of consideration, you replied, “That way,” pointing to the rightmost path, “i think we’ve already gone down the other two, and this one should come out by the cafe.”

“Oh, thank god,” Sam said, moving his hand over his stomach, “I’m starved.”

“Sammy, you should’ve said you were hungry! I wouldn’t have taken so much time stopping along the way,” you answered, a small wave of guilt painting your features.

“No, doll, it’s fine,” he assured you, “I want you to have fun without feeling rushed.”

You gave a reluctant nod. “Okay, but next time say something.”

“I promise,” he replied, “Now let’s finish up this trail.” He watched you excitedly walk ahead, taking in the wonder of your surroundings, glancing back occasionally to make sure he was following along. Seeing you so effortlessly happy made his heart swell. Joy radiated from you, and it made you all the more beautiful.

These were the moments that Sam treasured most. The times when you were so overcome with the world around you that everything else seemed to fade away. They were the moments when you were most yourself, and they were the moments that would stay in Sam’s mind for long after. It was times like these that made Sam remember why he was so in love with you.

He eventually caught up to you in the trail, and you excitedly grabbed his hand, pulling him to the latest plant you had seen. Soft laughter fell from his lips as you continued to point out flower after flower, elation pouring from every inch of you.

The two of you neared the end of the trail when your phone began to buzz. You quickly retrieved it from your bag and answered the call.

“Hey!” you began, happiness still coloring your voice. “No, I’m at the gardens with Sam. We’re about to have lunch,” you said, nudging Sam and gesturing to the cafe ahead. “Oh yeah, I’d love that! At six thirty?” you paused for a moment, “Okay, I’ll see you then, babe. Love you!” You placed your phone back in your bag and turned to Sam.

“Who was that?” he asked with genuine curiosity.

“Chris. He wants to take me to see that new movie I was talking about the other day,” you explained.

“Ooooh a date night, huh?” Sam teased, wiggling his eyebrows.

You gave him a small shove, “Yes, Samuel, my boyfriend wants to have a date night.”

He let a small giggle fall from his lips, “Well that sounds fun. You want me to drop you at home after lunch so you can get ready?”

“Yeah, that’d be really nice of you, Sam,” you replied, “Thanks.”

“It’s the least I can do,” he answered, “Now let’s go get some lunch.”

“Alright,” you laughed, walking ahead to the small cafe. Sam stayed behind, watching as the sun painted your hair and reflected off the small bracelets on your wrist with a small smile on his face.

He knew that you would probably never love him in the exact way he loved you, but in this moment, that was okay. He didn’t need a lifetime of sacred “I love you”s or secret touches. He was grateful for the love he had and the time he got to spend with you, and really, that was all he needed. It was enough to bask in your light and feel its warmth. And with that thought in mind, Sam moved forward, content to spend an afternoon in your glow.

A/N: What a day to meet the master, huh? This au is based on the MTM music video, and it's a complete wild card for me. I'm using it as a place to explore all kinds of dark fantasy elements. I'm very interested to know what you think, and I hope you like it! ♡

Joshua awakes in darkness.

A breath is drawn from his chest like the string of a bow, taut, trembling; the sound of it mixes with the hum of the forest, the crickets and nightingales and the voice of the river. The air is cold, colder than he remembers it being when he fell into his dreamless sleep. He knows the prickling of his skin, the sudden shivering, the way his breath curls upwards in thin clouds — he knows these things like an old friend now.

“Samuel.” He reaches out in the darkness. “Samuel, I need you.”

His brother is awake in an instant. Even in sleep, Samuel is attuned to the sound of Joshua’s voice; he listens for the change of it, waits for when it will turn cold, dark, hungry.

For now, his brother’s voice is soft. “He’s coming.”

Samuel doesn’t ask if Joshua is certain. He can feel it too, that familiar shaking in his hands, and wills himself to be steady. He rises, moving sure-footed through the darkness; a lonesome wolf howls far in the distance, its cry made hollow in the trees.

“Hurry,” Joshua says. His voice is thinner now.

A third brother, a broken one, limps soundlessly from his guard post into the circle of trees where Joshua and Samuel stand. The sword at his hip is heavy, and the cold twines bruising fingers against his frame.

“What is it?” he asks. His eyes are the only thing left, the only part of him that he can trust; he watches as Samuel strips to almost nothing before pulling a long white robe over his body.

“God’s hand,” Jacob mutters. He whistles once, sharply, into the dark; a pair of glowing eyes opens and shimmers in the branches of a nearby oak.

“He’s coming,” Jacob says, watchful as the bright-eyed figure alights from the branch and lands like a cat on the ground, silent, graceful. He studies the figure’s shadowed face. “Are you Daniel?”

Sharp fangs show in a crooked smile. “Guess again.”

Jacob sighs. “Never mind. They’ll need a fire.”

The fanged creature hides its teeth and blinks once, twice, three times to rid its eyes of the feline glow. Soft brown takes its place, and worry finds a home in the curve of the mouth.

“What’s happened?” Daniel asks. Even his voice is different.

Jacob nods to the circle. “They need a fire. Your friend declined to help.”

Daniel shakes his head and bites the mark on the side of his hand, adding to the scars from teeth he’s set there before. “Not my friend.”

He gathers wood for the fire, broken ash and birch limbs cracking like ice across the surface of a frozen lake. Joshua flinches at each sound, his ears ringing, his head pounding; he hopes that the pain will not be as harsh tonight.

Daniel steps away when the fire is steady, flames curling and licking over the dead wood like serpent tongues. His eyes flicker again in the firelight.

“The hemlock,” Joshua urges, a creeping, frantic dread writhing like a living thing in his chest as the flame grows. He can feel it like a clawed hand around his heart, squeezing against the tender flesh.

Samuel ignores his brother. He knows which herbs he needs, which tinctures he must use; he mutters incantations to himself in a tongue that only he knows, a ghostly sort of song that makes it hard for Daniel to stay rooted. Everything must be perfect, and Samuel takes his time; he takes the herbs in his red-gloved hands, rolling dried flowers between his fingers until they crumble into a fine powder. 

Jacob sucks a sharp breath through his teeth. “He’s nearly here.” The pain is always worse when he comes, and it webs over his hip, his chest, his shoulder. He knows if he traced it with his hand it would follow the path of the white scars etched into his skin.

A shadow passes overhead, blocking out the light of the moon and a thousand trembling stars. Each breath comes in silvery tendrils now, and the forest grows quieter with each passing moment.

“Samuel,” Daniel says quietly.

“Silence.” Samuel’s voice is harsh. “The wine.”

Daniel brings him the wineskin in perfect obedience, watching as Samuel pours a draught into a silver cup. He mixes a portion of herbs into the syrupy wine and hands the cup to Daniel.

Joshua is silent, still, closed-eyed when Daniel comes to him. Daniel touches a gentle hand to his cheek, and Joshua startles.

“Oh,” he breathes. “Daniel.” He studies his brother’s face as Jacob did. “You are, aren’t you?”

Daniel presses the cup into Joshua’s hand. “Watcher doesn’t like this part. It’s only me.”

Joshua takes the cup, and Daniel pulls his dagger from its sheath; the blade catches the light of the fire and glints back against the flames. Joshua drinks the wine, swallowing down the bitter mix, and extends his arm to Daniel.

“I’m glad,” Joshua says, and there is enough softness to his voice to know he’s still there, at least for a moment. His entire arm is trembling, from his fingers to the crest of his shoulder. “I’d rather it was you.”

Daniel takes Joshua’s hand and cuts its swiftly, drawing the blade across his tender palm. Joshua gasps with the pain of it; blood wells in the hollow of his hand, and Joshua closes his eyes and turns his head when Daniel holds the cup underneath to catch it.

Daniel kisses Joshua’s bloody palm. “I serve the god of the wood.”

Joshua’s eyes sting with tears. It’s harder to breathe now. “Your service is counted as merit to you.”

Daniel takes the cup to Samuel and leaves Joshua’s blood smeared on his mouth, a blessing, a baptism. “Are you well?” he asks, looking over his brothers. Jacob sits beside him, supporting him with a steadiness Joshua has missed in his twin. Daniel is the one mending his hand, rubbing salve over the wound, bandaging it with a strip of cloth. Samuel sits just across, peeling his gloves off, sweating despite the cool of dawn.

“Well enough,” Jacob says. Even in his voice, his brothers can tell that his pain has subsided. They all dread its return, but for now, he is hale and whole as he ought to be, as he was before.

Samuel accepts the waterskin Daniel gives him, taking long drinks to slake his thirst. Joshua knows that the visits are just as hard on his brother as they are on him, perhaps moreso; Samuel stays awake, and it is he who must ensure that the ritual unfolds as it should.

Joshua puts his head in his hands. His head is woozy still, full of incense and ringing like a death knell with one word, one name, over and over.

“Corinne,” he says.

Samuel nods. “Yes. That’s her name.”

Jacob scowls. “No one asked you, Watcher.”

Jacob nods. “South.”

He looks up at his brothers. “Who is she?” he asks again. He doesn’t want the answer, but he must know.

Jacob grimaces. “Watcher was right. She’s... she’s meant to be your wife. He's chosen her.”

Madame Holly didn’t even give you the chance to step away from the table, reaching out her hand and wrapping her fingers around your wrist before you could turn away. “You cannot run from your fate, child. Follow your path, fall into fate.”

There was no need, nor want to argue, she released your wrist from her grasp and broke the intense eye contact the two of you had been stuck in, looking down to her tarot deck and beginning to shuffle the cards once again. 

You were the first one out of the tent, listening as your friends all thanked the woman before joining you outside. Your foot was hovering over the drop to the next stair as you turned dramatically to your friends. “Fall into fate, child. God, what a joke.”

It seemed that in your theatrics, you drastically overestimated how big the stair was, completely missing the step and losing your balance. 

You felt the drop of your stomach as you fell, reaching for something, anything, to latch onto.

And it seemed like luck was looking down on you with a grin as a pair of arms caught you before you landed on the pavement. You had squeezed your eyes shut, awaiting the impact of the concrete, but instead felt the rumbling of a chuckle. “Well, that’s one hell of a way to get my attention.”

Your eyes opened to see a smug grin, and you quickly found that it belonged to one of the attractive men Nadine had pointed out earlier. He helped you steady yourself back on your own two feet, and watched as you finally took a good look at him. 

He was tall, and frankly a little scrawny, but god was he attractive. His jawline alone kept your attention for a blink longer than you anticipated, and the cocky smirk on his face only deepened as your eyes finally locked on his own. You took a step back, realizing the close proximity and rolling your eyes. “Believe me, that wasn’t my intention.”

You caught a quick wink from him as you turned away, his voice being carried along by the breeze around you as he spoke. “You’re welcome for catching you.”

His words were quickly drowned out by the chorus of groans from your friends as they caught up with you. 

“What the fuck, Y/n.” You caught sight of Jackie in your peripheral as she spoke. “You literally just fell into a hot guy’s arms, and immediately shot him down when he was very clearly interested in you.”

“I don’t know what you want me to say, I just wasn’t interested.”

The five of you moved on, making your way around the grounds and picking activities as you went along. The sun had begun to set when you all decided to make your way to the seemingly endless rows of booths, each holding a separate game. 

From down the way, a pair of eyes caught sight of her, in the midst of winning a game of darts, his friends cheering around him, he took no prize, walking to the next booth with his friends as he watched you and your friends make their way to the dart booth. 

You wouldn’t say you were bad at darts, but you certainly weren’t good. So when you missed the final shot, you conceded to the loss, laughing at your attempt as Robyn stepped up to take her turn. 

“Excuse me, miss.” 

You turned, looking at the booth attendant with a curious expression. “Yes?”

From beneath the counter, he pulled up one of the large stuffed bears that you get when you hit every shot. “This is for you.”

“But I didn’t win.”

He chuckled and placed the bear on the counter, sliding it toward you. “I know. One of the last guys to win told me to give it to you.”

You reached out, pulling the fluffy stuffed animal into your arms. “Could you uh- could you describe what he looked like? I’d like to be able to say thanks if I see him.”

You heard a giggle behind you, and you quickly turned to give Eleanor a sharp look.

“Yeah, he’s uh, about my height, long brown hair in a bun. He’s wearing a Chicago Music Exchange shirt.”

You gave him a warm smile before turning back to your friends. Nadine was wearing a somewhat blank look for a moment before the pieces seemed to connect in her brain. “Wait, a Chicago Music Exchange shirt, isn’t that what that one dude was wearing?” Jackie took her first shot, the popping of a balloon capturing all of your attention as she lined up her next shot. “Oh, you mean the tall mysterious man that just so happened to catch our dumbass friend.” She took her second shot, popping a second balloon. “Yeah, that’s the one.”

The five of you walked around for a while longer, having tired of the games, you all bought some food before slowly making your way to the exit. 

He could faintly see you from the top of the ferris wheel, only half listening as his best friend teased him about fumbling with a girl that could have been a great meet cute story years from now, but he watched with a small grin playing on his lips as you hugged the giant stuffed animal to your chest as you and your friends politely said goodnight to the people in the ticket booths.
