you never said what i was saying. what? yesterday. you said i was saying something and that’s why you took my picture. oh, uh… i don’t know. my guess… i saw this girl trying to be someone ELSE. but for that moment… it was like you were alone – or, you thought you were. and, you know, you could just be yourself.
PTSD isn’t just flashbacks. while a lot of movies, books, games etc equate post traumatic stress disorder to having extremely vivid flashbacks in which one thinks the trauma is happening again, this is not the only symptom of PTSD, nor is it a requirement for having the disorder.
other symptoms of PTSD include
problems sleeping
nightmares
hypervigilance (constantly checking surroundings for safety, looking for any possible threat)
being easily startled
being emotionally numb or not experiencing joy
seeing the world as a terrible place
memory loss
trouble relating to others
physiological or strong emotional reactions to reminders of trauma
intrusive thoughts about the trauma
(full list of criteria here)
flashbacks are not the be all and end all of PTSD. it’s a much more complex disorder than it’s portrayed in a lot of media, nor is it military exclusive. i hope this post can at least help educate some people beyond the incomplete and in some cases outright wrong information that a lot of people have.

ship thing: mericcup?
send me a ship and I will explain why I do or don't ship it
i am absolutely mericcup trash. other than aesthetics purposes, they just seem compatible personality-wise. they’re both curious and adventurous and passionate. i also feel like they’d just?? even each other out?? idk if that’s cheesy but

€ for a bad memory that still haunts them
thinking back on it years later, her cheek still stung. gothel never hit her. ever. she didn’t even remember what she had done to earn the slap. she might have talked back to her, or they were arguing. the only thing she remembered was the way her mother’s nails scraped her cheek as her palm collided with her face. she couldn’t have been older than thirteen, and the force of the blow had knocked her into the side of the table. the most her mother had ever done for discipline was grab her tightly by the arm or drag her by the ear to her bedroom. even though she never struck her again, each time her mother was angry, or when anyone was angry with her, she instinctively pulls back.
