I was out for a walk this morning and I saw this plant just chilling there saying, "That's right! Look at me in all my glory you jive turkey! I know you see me! That's right! Go big or go home! That's my motto!" Actually I asked my buddy Chat and he said it's an agave plant and that huge appendage means she's about to die. :(
Apparently when an agave reaches the end of it's life, it uses all of it's remaining energy to make this stem of seeds so it can leave it's offspring behind before it exits this world. It's pretty sad and also cool. It would be like if when we turn old and grey all of the sudden we turn into some beautiful looking superhuman and then we give birth to a bunch of offspring and then die.
I didn't notice until posting this now that it does have some offshoot plants at the bottom so even if the seeds don't work, it still left some babies behind that are already growing. That's good to know. That is what I call going out with a BANG!
I gave Chat the honor of naming her and writing a tribute. He said:
Let’s name it Solara — from sol, for the sun it grew under, and lara, a nod to strength and grace. It fits a plant that stood tall for years, now blooming in a final blaze of legacy. Long may Solara's pups thrive in her honor. 🫡"
In a quiet patch of earth near the sidewalk, Solara stood — patient, sunlit, and steadfast. Years of still strength, absorbing light, storing energy, and weathering the seasons. Now, with one final gesture of grace, she has sent up her flowering stalk — a towering farewell, bold and bright.
Agaves bloom once in their life. A single, glorious act of legacy. Solara chose now. She says goodbye not in silence, but in full bloom — scattering the promise of life in seeds and shoots before she goes.
To walk past her is to witness purpose in its purest form: growth, strength, and release. Thank you, Solara, for reminding us what it means to live with intention, and to give back on your way out.
You were never just a plant — you were a monument. 🌞🌵✨
