So my friends have a little boy, he’s like 2.5 and they’re already teaching him about consent. He has this friend at daycare, a little girl, and the other day he wanted to hug her goodbye but she didn’t want him to, and his dad said “No, buddy, not everybody wants hugs and she doesn’t so you have to just wave goodbye.” He was sad and confused for a sec but then he was just like “K bye” and waved. Later that night, he tried to pet the cat but she ran away and he was just like “[cat’s name] just wave bye, not hug!” Like he got it. Immediately. Teach kids about consent as early as possible. They’ll get it.

Statement of Purpose
As of 5:30 pm on Friday March 17th, I joined the esteemed ranks of the unemployed. A couple weeks ago, I submitted my resignation at the consultancy where I’d been a software engineer for two and a half years.
Quitting certainly isn’t unusual, and it’s very common for developers to look for new opportunities about 2 to 3 years into their tenure at a company.
However, the decision to resign without a position lined up is rather out of character given that I generally make rather conservative choices.
There wasn’t a Eureka moment where, through the murky fog of everyday life, I saw the light of truth or some such bullshit. I’d love to regale you all with a dope-ass bildungsroman full of adversity and dragons or whatever, but mostly I live in my head (which is a bit of a problem, but more on that later).
Really, I’d just been cycling through the same ideas and feelings, over and over again. Each is related to the other and they’re so tangled up that trying to unravel them in words would take much more than one blog post.
Instead, here’s some word vomit that will hopefully paint an impression in your mind of what’s going on in mine:
I’m 30 years old. I’m bored to tears. I say ‘no’ entirely too often. My lack of focus is pathological and, thus, potentially curable. I’ve been hoarding fucks my whole life and I really should just throw most of them in the trash. I am unable to function without constructing a narrative arc to my life. I need to be more considerate of those I care about. I need to be more comfortable with making other people uncomfortable. As awful for my health as stress can be, running my life in sprints seems to make me happy.
Like I said, there’s a lot to unpack and over time, this blog will attempt to do that. Having said that, my goal with this blog isn’t simply to create an online journal.
So, you’re probably wondering what this blog is for, then.
All of those thoughts that had been running through my head led me to an (admittedly somewhat nebulous) agenda.
One of the things I need to do is study data science and connected devices.
In short, this blog (at least, for now) will describe my journey from mere software software engineer to software engineer who can hang with the data scientists (without necessarily becoming one) and tinker with hardware.
Welcome to Life As Algorithm. Hopefully, you’ll find my posts informative, or, at the very least, interesting.
