I beat FFX for the first time last night. I didn't really like Yuna much at first but she ended up being my fave (after the wedding scene lol) and now I'm amped to play FFX-2 lol

The thing I liked most about this game was that the character dialogue often had like a second layer to it haha like ummm the characters were often trying to express themselves without saying something out loud, but you still kind of understood what they meant

Also I can't believe I had to fight Seymour like 4 times, insane lol actual roach

lately i've just been using personal time to get better at things that will feed me and house me (digital design, 3d design, motion design, exhibit design, i don't know... ) that I basically don't draw anymore so this is just a little bit of what i force myself to draw sometimes, it's brainless and i just have to copy poses and they don't even have to be good haha

it's been hard to draw lines between "art that I make for work" and "art that i make for myself" and I think the former tends to take over a lot, and the only thing that will force me to do more of the latter is if I suddenly develop a brain disease for a piece of media but then I end up just stagnating professionally idkkkk capitalism sucksssss

This is the first time I've tried Scratch! It started because I was bored last month at work and decided to draw a little snowboarding cat in libresprite because I missed snowboarding so bad... And then it became the character in this Scratch project.

I'm pretty bad about finishing projects even though I'm very good at starting them so I wanted to challenge myself to try this and finish a whole project before the end of 2024 and I did it! I worked on it for a few minutes here on November weekends but did most of it in the last 3 days on my winter holiday.

It started with doing the sprites and figuring out how to change the frames to make animations, and then how to blend one animation to another (idling to jumping and back). After that I figured out parallaxing backgrounds, and random tree generation. Finally it was learning how to make a collision system that didn't break everything, how to keep proper score, do UI, and display variable text (extremely stupidly).

Up until 3 days ago, this game was about avoiding obstacles... Until I tried to think of a name for the game and I landed on Stump Stomper, which implied... stomping on the obstacles instead of avoiding them, so I changed the entire objective and collisions system HAHA...

I'm not entirely new to writing code but I think in some ways, the limitations of Scratch blocks made it a little harder (but maybe also easier in other ways). As expected, it was very frustrating when nothing would be working, but also the high of something that DID work or a problem that did got solved... unbeatable god-like feeling, yippee!!!!

would LOVE to hear your thoughts on the earthsea series once you finish it. I read it for the first time last year and I think reading miss le guins writing fundamentally changed me. it's so goddamn good

Okay I finished the last book on the plane the other day but um I should preface this by saying that I haven't read Tales from Earthsea and skipped straight to The Other Wind and then I read the author's afterword where she was like "can't believe this publisher just switched the 5th and 6th books as if the order didn't matter!" god it felt like being scolded LOL but I really wanted to know what happens after Tehanu...

Feels crazy saying this but I'm having a hard time remembering any other books that I've read where we follow multiple (!) characters from childhood to old age you do in Earthsea. My favorite kinds of stories are coming of age stories but those never really tell you what happens to the main character after they finish their big quest. In Earthsea, the main characters are funny kids who have to overcome challenges but then they're grown up and they stay interesting and continue to change! Shocked and delighted 🥹

There was a lot to love... The world building, the way everything unfolds and gets more layered over time, the new supporting characters in every book, the magic system, the dragons, the concise writing... I was also reading the Language of the Night before all of this so that was a lot of interesting background too.

I wish I had read this all as a kid but I'm also really glad I read it as a adult lol, the re-read value here's so huuuuge. Definitely gonna read again and try and do some more drawings based on the descriptions, I'll pay more attention next time HAHA...
