“And here I make a rule- every great story is about everyone or it will not last. The strange and the foreign is not interesting- only the deeply personal and the familiar.” - John Steinbeck, East of Eden (1952)
Yellowjackets is a story for every girl, every woman, every individual. It succeeds because elements of every character can be found in every aspect of our pasts, our presents, our futures. One day I might say “I’m just like Nat,” but then waver, knowing that parts of me echo of Lottie, scream of Shauna, mourn of Travis. Their losses are universal losses. Their successes are universal successes. They tell their own stories back, like Van does in season three, in a way that makes them palatable. We all have our stories, both true and the digestible version. Their adventures and misadventures carry the marks of the oldest tales. Their story is a great story, and it is deeply personal and familiar.
Natalie surviving a card draw that was meant to kill her and later dying as the result of a card draw that wasn't meant for her, oh I'm sick
”Superboy and the Invisible Girl. Son of steel and daughter of air…”
”…he’s a hero, a lover, a prince. She’s not there.”
I like to think they’re waiting for her
my favorites from the tags
I like the idea of a special place all the Yellowjackets go when they die. None of them get to go to heaven or hell or even purgatory, they have their own group afterlife.
For a while Laura Lee is there alone (and probably grappling with the fact that she did not go to one of the Christian realms she was prepared for) but eventually Jackie arrives and it isn’t as bad. They become good friends.
As the months in the wilderness pass it starts to fill up. But then no one else really joins until 2021 and all of a sudden they have a big reunion. Laura Lee finally gets to see Lottie again, Travis and Javi are together, Nat is there. Eventually, after however many months or years it takes, they’re all there. Shauna is with the real Jackie for the first time since their fight, Tai and Van are together, they’re all there.
And the worst is behind them. Because even though this tragic fate of being in the crash continues to tying them together even in death, they can hang out. They can have dance parties and sit around a fire confessing secrets and play soccer. It’s a ‘one must imagine Sisyphus happy’ sort of thing.
Travis is connected to so many deaths in the show and it’s kind of insane. Leaning heavily on the supernatural element for this one.
Travis breaking the branch his dad is on. We see coach Martinez lift his hand a little, before the branch breaks and he falls to the ground.
The fight between Shauna and Jackie that led to Jackie freezing to death alone started with her reprimanding the others for what they did to Travis during doomcoming.
In season 2 Travis is the one that starts the ritual that leads to the prayer circle for Shauna and her baby, I think when he is letting out blood, his mind was focused on protecting Shauna. Leading to her surviving, but not her baby.
We see the same thing happen later on in this season. Natalie is chosen for the hunt. He tackles Shauna to the ground to stop her, allowing Natalie to escape. Protecting her, but it led to losing his little brother in a horrific way.
In season 3 he is the only one who catches Nat heading for coach Ben. He makes a half hearted attempt to convince her not to put Ben out of his misery, before ultimately opening the gate that leads to the suffering man, letting Natalie in.
And of course in episode 9, we discover that Travis is the one who created the pit trap, he intended it for Lottie, but she breaks his resolve when she apologizes. But because that intent was there, Mari ran right into her death.
Maybe Lottie hyperfixating on him isn’t as random as we think.
this was pure evil of them. like javi’s hat got butchered too? and Shauna choosing it to make her mask out of? she might not see him in any hallucinations but that little boy haunts her
This is the money Marge. Reblog for good fortune
The knife Shauna loaned Javi was the same one she had to butcher him with
but you don’t get it. because do you mean shauna’s awfulness, her meanness, her violence doesn’t make sense? what do you mean ‘where did her softness go?’ ‘what happened her to guilt and vulnerability?’ it fucking gone! her best friend died an avoidable death. her baby didn’t even cry. her baby wasn’t even fucking hers, but a piece in the other’s wilderness cult. her teammates left her alone to butcher the body of a LITTLE BOY WEEKS AFTER SHE LOST HERS. all of their lives were turned into nothing but a sacrifice to the wilderness for the rest of them to survive. they felt entitled to the deaths she held the closest to her heart. of course she’s fucking angry and bitter and borderline psychotic. of course she’s hungry for the title of queen because what else does she have? what else, in the mind of a TEENAGE GIRL, could quell or at least mask some of the pain and make it at least seem worth something? why would she want to go home when her baby and best friend’s bones rested in the wilderness? why would she want to face a reality where she’s nothing but a tragic girl who was in a plane crash with a dead friend and dead baby that no one expect the team even knew existed? why? when she could be something that could never exist back home? fear was all she had felt for MONTHS. why should she not be entitled to be a little feared too? is it right? no. of course fucking not. it’s so unbelievably messed up. THAT’S THE POINT!
it says a lot that only certain people GET shauna shipman
Can we talk about the fact that travis and Shauna’s (the ultimate parallel duo) only two interactions were (1) “oh, heres the heart of your brother who I once cared for like a son but also indirectly killed, you should eat it” (2) “you wanna die like you brother did?” “The girl you were in a homoerotic codependent friendship with told me you were gay, so suck on that.”
Lottielee headcanons cause we were absolutely robbed of them 💔. I am PUSHING the Lottielee agenda
- Their first kiss just happened naturally. They were laying on the floor of Laura Lee’s trailer (IM A HUGE TRAILER KID LAURA LEE TRUTHER), Lottie was running her fingers through Laura Lee’s hair and it just kinda happened. It wasn’t Lottie’s first kiss but it was Laura Lee’s first kiss. Laura Lee prayed 4 times after their kiss cause she was paranoid they “committed adultery”. Lottie was all flustered because she got Laura Lee’s lipgloss on her lips, it tasted like cherry. :3
- The scene of them holding hands during the plane crash (the gif I used) was the confirmation of their relationship. (I don’t make the rules)
- Laura Lee learned how to braid hair at church camp, everytime we see Lottie with braided hair Laura Lee did it for her. Sometimes they each take strands from each others hair and braid them together.
- They were girlfriends in private as Laura Lee didn’t know how the world would react to their relationship because it wasn’t really accepted back then (like why Tai and Van were private), but especially because she was Christian.
- Lottie calls them “best friends” and Laura Lee calls them “best buds” around other people.
- Laura Lee would practice for her church play with Lottie. Lottie would say the lines of all the other characters and Laura Lee would do the lines for Mary. She got Mary every year in the church play.
- Last one, Lottie wearing Laura Lee’s dress to doomcoming makes me think that they wore each others clothes a lot. They had sleepovers at Lottie’s and they’d share her expensive pajamas after they took baths together (in a sfw way). A lot of Lottie’s clothes were left at Laura Lee’s house from how much they’d share clothes.
We were so robbed of Lottielee it’s not even funny💔💔
