Avery liked the quiet of the back of Florish and Blotts. It was near silent except for the occasional sound of the cash register clinging, murmured words as transactions took place. A few comfortable chairs provided for customers gave her a place to sit with her book,  and the owners so far didnât seem to care how long she spent there, as long as she bought something before the day was over. It was certainly preferable to being at home, where everything was on edge. Since Midsummer, she had been living with a furious Aeron, one who was on a warpath. He hated failure, and that was what had happened. His plans had been interrupted ; of course he had to find out who was to blame. How was she supposed to relax, when her own uncle was looking for a traitor? If his gaze turned on herâŠshe didnât want to think what he might see. The only reasonable solution was to stay away from him as much as possible. It was a good thing no one seemed to notice that she was gone from the house almost every day.Â
The only downside of the store was that, occasionally, someone came to the back section looking for one of the rarer books in their collection. Avery glanced up at the sound of footsteps approaching, and her eyes widened in recognition of their owner.  The question burst out of her before she had a chance to think better of it. â What are you doing here? â
Nova set the Herbology book back on the shelf with a thunk. True, had she been at Hogwarts, she wouldâve had to take seventh year Herbology. But as it was, she hated the subject, and didnât have access to magical plants anyway. So she turned and walked idly through the bookshelves, searching for anything on Occlumency. Finding nothing near the front, Nova rounded a corner and almost dropped her bag at the sound of a voice. âI-Avery?â She hesitated. âHey. Um, Iâm trying to pick up a few textbooks. Stuff for seventh year.â
