I've been unproductive and forgetting about this blog in general... and on top of that, grinding a lot of Limbus Company rather than playing my dragon game. 🥴
Top is an OC as Liu Association Fixer, bottom is 5 & 7 in modern setting for a fanfiction I've been reading :)
alright o7 a lot of my process is fumbling around but i hope some of this can be helpful!
auraboa wings look pretty much like normal wings with exaggeratedly long secondaries. i've never really been able to make sense of the skin flap (?) so i just ignore it. so anyway here's the step by step on how i render wings generally:

you can see quite a few errors in it. i tend to iron these out while i paint lol
2. colors (based off one of my dragons!)
one thing i'll do if i'm working with gradients is to eyedrop some of the intermediate color & paint it on, just to prevent it from looking too smooth. luckily fr tends to color the coverts & primaries/secondaries separately so we can get some edges in there.
3. painting 1 (texture, carving)
this is where my process stops being as defined. here i'll take the intermediate colors (like the last step) but use it to carve in feather details, and pull colors from the lineart to start adding shadows. one thing i like to do is shade the bottom of the secondary coverts no matter what! it separates the coverts & secondaries pretty effectively & looks good so i just think its neat.
anyway i try to get the idea of layers/volume across here + tweak the way the feathers are pointing if needed. thumbs up
4. painting 2 (round out lineart, fix everything)
this step will likely be a Lot easier if you have clean sketches. i don't because i'm inconsiderate towards my future self. what i'm doing here is cleaning up my lineart & blending it further into the wings so it looks softer.
this is also your last chance to fix any feathers LOL im really tired so i didnt end up fixing all of them (you can see some of the secondary coverts look kinda weird and whatnot) but after that its just more painting. and when you decide to call it quits congrats. you've painted a wing!
it's fairly quick but thats because im used to painting & use a brush with lots of sensitivity. i think this was ~40m from sketch to wing render. thumbs up.
