Do you think that media gives enough coverage to artists/art?

what I’ve learned from this particular assignment or rather survey, is that we as a media play a huge role into giving artists their exposure. it may not be  their big break, but eventually he’s going to get somewhere

it all goes back to that saying “you never know who’s watching” so the more we write articles about them,these underground documentaries we are putting them out there and they start becoming a household name as the communities get used to them.

especially fine artists, we should market them, talk about their craft ,recommend them to other people. but they also have to take the initiative to get their names out there. and also they should work hard to produce main stream level so that they can go places

Social Media pressures reflective piece..

 What I’ve learnt from this assignment was how ignorant technology has made us become as youth.

It is easy for us to avoid and neglect everything because we hope that social media will spoon feed it to us. Social media has caused us to be lazy and irresponsible. I found that out of ten only two young people thoroughly understand the power of social media.

I also found that some have actually become slaves to it, like a drug.

Interviewing some of the young people from campus made me realise also that is not too late. Some young people are strongly aware of this disease and they are willing to fight it.

Gender equality is a very sensitive topic for me. Personally it doesn’t go with my beliefs and my morals as a young woman.

I was never raised to see my mother as equal to my father. Yes they were both important and played outstanding roles in my life but not at any point did i compare them or see the other as superior than the other.

Subconciously though i just knew that my father was the head of the house, and i didn’t expect my mother to go against his will.

Now growing up you learn that the world doesn’t function the way your family does. you learn how every household is unique and how you represent your one in the outside world.

What i’ve learnt from my new media investigative assignment on gender eqaulity is that, the more people try to convince themselves that we are all eqaul, the more blatant it becomes that ,that is just a dream far, far away from reality.

As indivisualls already we are not equal, not equally gifted , we are born that way.

I find it hard to believe that now a collective can change the nature of that..i think we as women and men should just accept that we are different because once we do, then we can be tolerant of each other and embrace our differences, instead of trying to disturb god’s nature

Planet Zuma"

my reflective piece on the "Planet Zuma" speech by Musi Maimmane. I'll be the first to admit the joke and the shame that our honourable parliament has evolved to be.

I really feel like my ears are blocked from all the noise and the negative sentimentality that's been reigning supreme in our parliament lately.

The metaphors and adjectives that are used to describe our state as a country makes it blatant clear that we have shifted hundred times from what we used to be, from what the real former leaders of this country strived for it to be. our reality as a country really frightens me.

Now Musi Maimmane is undeniably a wise man, which is not something we can say about most of the parliament members, however the way in which he expresses his grievances on behalf of all the Democratic Alliance members was not appropriate (I feel).

The way he constantly stopped to point out at President Zuma was very disrespectful, especially from a leader like him. it oozed arrogance and barbarism and a total lack of Ubuntu(humanity). As a young South African he could've done better. he kept on saying how he and the nation as a whole has lost respect for president Zuma which I find highly hypocritical as a leader himself who commands respects. It is only natural for him to show the same respect to his leader.

Some of the points that he made were quite valid I will not lie. one that stood out for me was the fact that Zuma did not mention anything about basic education during this year's SONA speech. that was very ignorant and reckless of him.

education should be a priority in this country especially with our youth being exposed to a lot of toxic habits and the unbelievably high statistics of drug abuse.

I think Maimmane has a potential of being a legit transparent leader that proclaims to be, but he also need to know the fundamentals like respect for your elders, leaders and colleagues and the way to address those people or else he's going to create worst problems than those that the ANC government has attracted.

why journalism?

I really don’t believe that i chose journalism but journalism chose me rather.

Growing up as kid i always had an interest in the glamorous art of telling people’s stories through magazines and television documentaries. I always knew that i was going to be a part of it one day.

Being in a science class full of aspiring astronauts and a maths teacher who constantly reminded me how bad i was in maths wasn’t so ideal for me. One day my language teacher called me in her office and asked me if i had any idea of what i wanted to be professionally. that conversation changed my life and coming out of that office i knew exactly what i wanted to be and that was a Journalist.

I still can’t believe i’m just a few months away from fulfilling my long term goal. God is great!

Finding my purpose in this industry now is my mission. I’ve learned that it is true what they say that it is the “Survival of the fittest” industry. I understand that for me to make a significance mark i must bring something new and something that will help our industry to grow. I choose to embrace my uniqueness and abilities and strengths in this field. 

I can say my heart is within the entertainment section.I want to write and expose the new raw talent that South Africans posses. I realize that people from rural areas and farms are usually excluded and not discovered compared to those living in the cities and townships. This does not mean that they’re not equally talented or competent. They are just not exposed. that is precisley what i want to do!

My oh my!!! bumping into this picture is a dream come true!

Have you ever had a difficult time trying to explain your relationship with God? the way you feel about him? the way he makes you feel? to think i’ts only been a year since i took the decision that changed my life forever,Wow! God is great! who can deny his gracious love?

Being rooted in God is very important as a christian, asking him to direct and check your paths is vital. It helps you to grow as opposed to being a lukewarm christian who will always be on one level and allowing the enemy to deprive you of your godly pleasures that comes with spiritual growth.

Telling my mind that I have an important appointment with God every time i go to church or a home cell, changed my life. It’s different when you go to God or when you to go people. As you grow spiritually you might even realize that making friends in church is not ideal, actually anything that might disrupt you from fixing your eyes on God is not.

ALWAYS remember the bible story of a man who moved away from the crowd and climbed the tree, just to see Jesus. We too cannot see Jesus if we’re still among the crowd ,we have to take a further step, go an extra mile, climb a tree if needs be so that we can see our creator.

As young people we get bored easily and we always try to do things that we’ll keep us occupied and active. Although doing this in church might be a part of God’s divine purpose concerning your life, don’t let it blind you and cause you to miss God’s presence. NEVER be too busy for God! stay rooted in him

18th annual Time Of The Writter’s festival

As an upcoming journalist it is always good to listen to succesful journalists talking about their experiences, the ups and downs , the good and the bad. “Never pretend to know everything, ask!”, said Margaret Van Klemperer at the 18th annual Time Of The Writter’s festival held at City Campus, Durban University of Technology.

“Being a journalist is a hard job and requires a lot of reading, read even when it is boring”added Klemperer. As Charles Johns once siad “Readers are leaders”. One of the duties that comes with being a journalist is to inform the public. How does one even come close to achieving that goal without reading consistently?

Time of the writter’s three honorable guests ; Futhi Ntshingila , Margaret Van Klemperer and Mzilikazi Wa Afrika emphasized that education in this industry is vital, as it helps you to understand journalism on another level. Futhi Ntshingila , investigative journalist and author of Do Not Go Gentle said that you should be yourself at all times and never doubt your strength as a writter. With all the competition in the industry , wanting your story to make it to the front page, journalists may end up compromising a lot.

Durban University of Technology’s journalism students got a chance to ask the guests questions afterwards and they expressed their views about the time of the wirtter’s festival.

“I’m very grateful for this opportunity, to be visited by such amazing guests and i will put into practise all that they have taught us”, Tankiso Mothibe a second year journalism student.

“time of the writter’s festival was very helpful to as aspiring writter, it sort of gave me an idea of the world that i’m in love with but know not much about, if i may say”, Zama Andisa Ngcoya.

Time of The Writters is hosted by the University of KwaZulu Natal, the center of creative arts annualy. Their aim is to embrace writting and sustain the writting culture.

My #wcw ...well first and foremost I don't even know who this beautiful woman is.

now my point is, I looked at this woman and I realised that African beauty is not the dark or brown skinned nor the light skinned. it has nothing to do with that , actually for me it is just an accessory.

beauty is within and has nothing to do with your race, tribe, class, and mostly the colour of your skin. It is the the way one feels about themselves irregardless of other people's opinion about her.

the clothes I wear don't make me African or less African.my hairstyle, nor the way I speak. it is my morals and values, the consciousness , ethics, the list is endless.

AFRICANISM should be in you. you can't wear it, you can't speak it, you can't see it but you can feel it.

just had a mind blowing session with judge Albies Sachs after watching his out of this world documentary "Soft Vengeance ". being a young south african citizen, a so called "bornfree" i have learned not just from the various books about the apartheid and history of South Africa but also from the horses mouth that it wasn't a walk in a park, but  a struggle. Judge Albies is one of the countless victims of apartheid in south africa. he lost his arm when he was tried to be assassinated through a bomb that was hidden in his car. having heard about his inspiring yet insightful, nerve racking  story I had my expectations. I thought I was going to meet a cold person whose heart is filled with nothing but anger, to my surprise a tall old man walked in the hall with a wide smile on his face, not just " A very good day everyone smile" but an all is well smile. he said a lot  and shared a lot of his experiences with us but what stood up for me personally, was when he explained to us how he feels about the pepertrators, forgiveness and the sacrifices he's made for the country. " I do not like the term 'sacrifice' ,I was born privileged and that too was a privilege for me, everything about it to be born in that era, with that group, the spirit that lived in us it was all a privilege, i do not regret anything". It was such an honor to meet this old but vibrant guy and such an open minded person. they're going to be at the University Of Fort Hare this friday.
