The Pink Diamond reveal shocked me right into finally starting an art blog like I have been wanting to! I'm a broke 90s kid so right now all I work with is pencil and acrylic paint. Yea, I know I'm a big time amateur. I will do MORE than just SU! But tbh...it'll be lots of SU!! I am also SAVING up to get a nice drawing tablet so my art will improve!! Watch me grow, yo!

Here’s the thing: with practice, just about anyone can learn to draw photorealism. And yes, that is VERY impressive. I love photorealistic paintings and drawings that make me pause to take a breath because I am astounded at the level of detail that someone took the time to create.

But when that artist shows their style, a coloration only they could create, a world no one else can see until it’s on paper - wow. No amount of photorealism can replace the limitless human imagination and I’m thankful for each piece of other worlds I get to see.

No one can create exactly like you. You are the only one who can put your world on paper, or tablet, or napkin - only you can create the worlds that your hands can produce. What an amazing power you have, what a special gift, what a wonderful thing!

You are the architect of something incredible. No one else can create like you. Never forget how amazing that is.

can you give me some tips for drawing proportions? all my character drawings look the same and it’s bumming me out!!

@seventeenangrybees I wasn’t ignoring this ask! I just really didn’t know how to answer it. There’s a lot of ways to make a character look different that are hard to sum up haha. but proportion wise-

To sum it up my best tip is to do plenty of research on life drawing and just practice. But I realized my proportions look better if i keep to the general rules of halves.

There’s no official rules that are called rules of Halves. Its just something i noticed. That if you cut up a person in all the major limps and line them up. They all prob be the same length. That’s cause man is just a perpetually toppling piece of work that only functions by keeping balance. So our bodies have to be pretty much balanced out.

I start with the head for humans. The head size can chart the major points on a person as I’ve drawn out on top of this picture of a model. It’s like- a basic map. obviously the shorter a person is the smaller the head and limbs. And Children are just…. horrible. I hate drawing them.

But when you have the basic map in your head and you feel like drawing a character of a different size then these points are just helpful guides

Something i also notice is the more cartooney you get, this shit doesn’t have too much weight. They become even more like guidelines.

Most cartoons follow their own rhythm and depending on the style guide. I notice most cartoons just draw the head and then apply the halves rule to just the body. Cause cartoons don’t really have to worry about falling over with their gigantic heads cause physics don’t work in Toon Town

a quick grass tutorial

I’ve never really wrote a tutorial before so apologies if this is bad

1. okay first thing I do is pick three colors, a mid, dark, and light. I like to check the colors in greyscale to make sure there’s enough contrast between each one.

I then plop down a blob of whatever my middle tone color is.

2. next, I take my dark color and just sort of randomly place it around. I try to make sure there’s a good amount of both the mid and dark tones spread throughout. I personally like to keep it kinda messy. I also have pen pressure on for both brush size and opacity, so I can have some blending action going on.

3. for the next step I do the exact same thing as before, except with the light color.

4. aight this is where we start adding details. see how you just have a bunch of colors and edges where two colors meet? use the eyedropper and go to an area where two colors meet, eyedrop a color, and then use that color to draw in your grass blades. I do this at every point where colors meet. should note I personally like to use a square brush, but you can really just use anything.

5. you can technically stop at the last step if you’re going for a more simple look, but to add more details I go to the “empty” areas of solid color and just draw in random strokes using a color nearby. it’s just a way to fill up the empty space.

6. basically more of the same idea of eyedropping and drawing. for more variety so things look interesting, I like to add random plant shapes.

7. and so the grass doesn’t look too plain, I add random dots of color and pretend it’s flowers and stuff.

and there you have it, this is how I approach drawing grass.
