They started drifting apart when Kurt's mom got remarried.

He started doing sports some time in middle school. When Rach would see him in the hall, he wouldn't act the same. She wondered if he was upset at her but he'd dismiss those concerns when they were alone, say he's just trying to make his mom happy by doing hockey or football, and that made him tired.

He'd start coming to school roughed up more than usual. Kurt'd say he fell out of a tree. Rachel knows he's a better climber than that.

He stopped talking to her when she refused to let it go.
