i find it so cute when the 5 called uncle colm to the investigation & when their plan succeeded, they all celebrated him & he was smiling saying, "any time, weans! any time at all!" :)
Fellow Lost in Space enjoyers appear
Jung Bong shouldn't have been characterized as someone who takes his passion for food to start a restaurant. He loves eating and snacking but throughout the show we see him nerd out over video games (among stamp collection). He's said to be super competitive (on the same level as Taek) and we see so many scenes of him playing at the arcade. Considering he was also a sickly child, and what w Jung Hwan making his brother's fantasies (football, basketball, pilot) as his own dreams, Jung Bong's career path should have been written as a game developer. The show heavily references the economic policies that allowed American exports into Korea. The first McDonald's is a celebrated occasion. The Nikes and Addidas sneakers are cherished and in high demand among the students. The denim fashion, the music, posters of Michael Jordan and Jackson, the Stevie Wonder and Wham! songs - the entirety of Reply 1988 reflects this influx of American culture and influence. So why not video games? JB taking his passion for gaming to the next level by becoming a game developer, influenced by the popular video games of the 80s and 90s America makes more sense than starting his own restaurant (and let's face it: the writers adding his cooking skills and descriptions of flavour profiles in the third and second to last episode was such an obvious retconning attempt to justify his choices in the last episode). And for a sickly child who stayed indoors all day, gaming as an act of escapism and living out his fantasies was a perfect character conclusion (he had the money and connections and he's always been someone on top of the latest technologies).
There was already a character who started his own restaurant, Dyong Ryung (a decision that makes the most sense for a character progression in all of Reply 1988 - will explain in another post why) Why add JB, a compelling character in his own right, to that list unless the writers really just wanted the show to end and didn't care what happened to his arc, which frankly explains a lot about the time skip episodes.
not me accidentally spoiling myself for the ending of reply 1988 halfway through episode 1 lmao. but it’s super interesting watching knowing the endgame and spotting all the foreshadowing. I read this incredibly big brain analysis comparing the show to a game of go, where junghwan is black and taek is white. black always starts first, so white starts the game 6.5 territories behind - just like how taek only really shows up properly from episode 6 onwards. also, in the first two episodes the number 6 always pops up whenever taek is referenced. I love shit like this, it really shows the amount of thought and detail the writers put into everything.
It's very funny to me when people say in reply 1988, Deok sun must have ended with Jung hwan---- no not at all!!!
The writers build it so brilliantly. He loves his brother. We see that clearly. He is always hesitating with Deok sun, not clear if he wants her or not.
Even though i love his character a lot. He's charming, sassy and a big softie but this is the writers telling you not to settle for a person who confuses you. Deok sun was falling for him consistently but he didn't make a move, at all. Never clarified his actions or feelings. Left her guessing about what he meant. Show the people you love, that you love them clearly.
I can no longer watch stuff like 2521 and reply 1988. They're way too sad for me. The whole passage of time is just too much and I can't handle it. I need something that doesn't remind me of my mortality
Finished Reply 1988 today. The story honestly is so beautiful start to end that I feel like I was personally a part of that neighborhood and that friendship group. But even after all the plotlines and whether I agreed with them or not, ultimately what this show left me with is the realisation of how ruthless time is. What do you mean I have to make peace with the fact that there will always be something in my life that will be missing, left in the past, and I'll never be able to do anything about it. What do you mean we really absolutely have to say goodbye to our youth and everything it entails, what do you mean you can't just keep living with your middle aged parents forever and hangout with your friends whenever you want to. What do you mean that there are already houses and streets that I miss so much but can't call home anymore. I'm just 22, this is gonna be so much heavier to bear when I'm older. I wish humans didn't have the capacity for nostalgia, I can't take it.
Recently finished watching Reply 1988 for the third time and had a few thoughts -
1. Jung Hwan is a well written nuanced character. Hence, when I came on Tumblr and saw people characterise Duk Seon and Taek's relationship as sibling like, I was slightly annoyed. Actually, no, VERY annoyed because have we watched the same show? The thing w JH is that he's a character who loves quietly. He has been show to care for all the people he holds dear. From helping Taek open his chopsticks to writing his mother's name in English on her passport, to even checking on his friends (unlike Sun Woo who only cared about one thing at a time whenever the plot needed him to) - Jung Hwan cares deeply. He showed a genuinely sensitivity. Which is why it sucks even more that that didn't come through for Duk Seon. We as the viewers were familiarised with his love for DS. He stayed up late waiting for her, used himself as a shield in the crowded bus, got her the gloves, and gave her his umbrella. Sweet. Really is. There's no doubt he loved her. However, when you love someone, loving them loudly, openly, and making them feel that love is just as important as loving them quietly. Jung Hwan never openly celebrated DS. When him and Sun Woo are discussing girls and DS crops up, Jung Hwan is quick to describe her as a pretty girl among the uglies. Whenever she asks him for an opinion on her appearance (esp after her friends tell her that he likes her), he dismisses her or slights her, before giving a small smile visible only to us, the viewers. Even when Duk Seon develops feelings for him or reciprocates it, he holds back. Yes, by this time, Taek has revealed his feelings for DS before their friends. However, between Taek and JH, JH had the most access to Duk Seon. He literally lived above her house. And even before Taek's admission, Jung Hwan continued to pine and hold back, esp after the concert or when they were in Taek's room cleaning up. And in the six year time skip, Taek is quick to drive to the theatre where Duk Seon is waiting and shivering in the cold (because her date is a cheating shmuck) even though he knew Jung Hwan had feelings for her. Take cared for Duk Seon in a way that didn't hinge on her reciprocation. He always complimented her, doted over her, and was the happiest around her. At that point, when he met DS, his focus was just seeing this girl happy (he forfeited his match, for god's sake. Choi Taek, passionate baduk player forfeited his match just to be w Duk Seon). Jung Hwan, for all this positives and softness of heart, cared too much about being perceived a certain way by his friends. His loyalty to Taek came before him falling his heart. And nothing wrong with that I guess. But when it comes to love, hesitating over displaying affection is often a sign that maybe the love wasn't quite all there, especially considering Duk Seon at one point reciprocated. The birthday shirt fiasco was a case in point (the one w the pink shirt where she thought JH gave her gift for him to Jung Bong but that wasn't the case but JH didn't clarify the misunderstanding - though that level of silence feels more like the writers fumbling w JH's character).
Jung Hwan loved and cared deeply. But Duk Seon deserved someone who loved and cared for her deeply and let her know about it. And not just knowing, but also doesn't hesitate to make her feel it. She, like everyone else, deserves a love that's obvious.
I WANT TO LOCK SOME PEOPLE IN A ROOM AND FORCE THEM TO WATCH DARK AND 1899 BECAUSE THOSE ARE THE TWO BEST SHOWS ON NETFLIX AT THE MOMENT BUT PEOPLE SLEEP ON THEM CAUSE ONE IS ENTIRELY IN GERMAN AND THE OTHER IS A MIX OF MULTIPLE LANGUAGES. BUT THE CINEMATOGRAPHY IS JUST INCREDIBLE. THE STORIES ARE SO COMPLEX AND INTRICATE BUT IT ALL MAKES SENSE AT THE END WITHOUT LOOPHOLES (AS FAR AS I AM AWARE). CHARACTERS ARE MULTIFACETED. AND IT'S THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF DRAMA - THRILLER - SCI FI - HORROR.
dark (2017) is about a teenage boy that rides a bike and suffers. also time travel
the fact that walls get dusty is ridiculous. you're vertical. act like it.

For a second I didn’t realize it meant “high” as in a stoner--I thought “High Geologist” was like a rank of geologist or something and he was insulted you would challenge him to naming stones

“But what does Grover bring to the table? He’s just the comedy relief character.” Grover is juggling the role of babysitter, mediator, and emotional manipulator and he cracks jokes too? Give him a BREAK
He’s a 24 yr old single mom who is just trying to prevent his kids from killing each other with middle school insults
things I loved about season four of sex ed (spoilers ahead)
the amount of representation present this season. the disability rep, the queer and trans rep, how not shy the writers were confronting different trans and disability rights issues head on.
eric's arc with his religion and his gayness and how he was able to reconcile the two. this one really hit home for me as someone who is both queer and a person of faith. I love getting to see gayness have a place within faith, it just healed something for me, okay?
otis was so classically otis but he finally (FINALLY) acknowledged his own idiosyncrasies without just writing them off as being the fault of wounds in his life. by the end of ep 8 he was dedicated to making things better for himself and for other people and I'm actually so proud of him for that.
aimee's journey with healing from her SA trauma and how she navigated a new relationship with that. also I know it probably wasn't intentional but she's a very autistic coded character to me and watching her flourish as herself with isaac just did something so special to my heart. I would level cities for her.
and adam too!! him finally getting the closure he needed with eric and them communicating !!!! the scene at erin wiley's funeral when eric is able to tell adam how genuinely proud of him he is, just,,,my heart I love it when people get to heal !! also again with the unintentional neurodivergent rep, like come on - sitting undiagnosed by yourself, handsome? he's just like me fr.
I was worried the writers wouldn't do isaac's character justice, even though he was given a good arc in season three I was still anxious about where they would take it now that maeve was overseas and honestly, they didn't give him very much of a story outside of his history and who he was when he was with maeve. similar to aimee with him, I really liked watching more of his artistic traits pop out and I loved seeing him have a healthy friendship with someone. even better, I love it when the feelings he harbored for that person were mutual with no strings attached. I wasn't expecting him and aimee to be endgame but I'm absolutely not disappointed about it (you can tell he's my fav because I've written the longest paragraph about him so far).
cal and aisha and pk. need I say anything more? my only gripe is that I wish we could have had a glimpse of the three of them on a date or even see if there were other people in the polycule but that's okay !! I also just really loved cal's journey with themself and I loved getting to see them supported for their identity it meant so very much to me.
lastly but certainly not the least, I loved that otis and o ended on mutually agreeable terms with each other, it just really added to the whole theme of trying to heal and open new doors and be okay with things not being in control all the time. it was especially touching that he gave his position as therapist to her because he knew and acknowledged he had work to do on himself like !!! very rare otis w but totally welcomed. had the show continued I would have loved to see more development w him.
