Where Ever You Go, That’s Where You Are
I was having a gloomy day and was doing that thing where you fantasize about running away and starting all over. But then I remembered the wise words a friend of mine once told me after she monologued about a similar desire years ago. When she finished expressing all her unhappiness and how leaving would be nice she paused and said “But where ever you are, that’s where you are. That’s the problem now isn’t it?”
You can change your physical surroundings, run as far as you want, and maybe you’ll be happy for a while because of how distracted you are by the ‘new’. But at the end of the day the old things that were making you unhappy will usually come back since all too often it’s about fixing a character flaw in ourselves, or coming to terms with something, rather than what’s around us. It’s best to fix the sadness within and then go on your journey or work on that sadness in your travels.
So I had a funny idea about a group of travelers going on a journey and it turned out to be these three. The two astronauts realizing that the farther they go the more it stays the same and the robot, being respectful, is letting them have their moment.
Or, alternatively, they are another example of how someone comes to terms with this fact. They are stoic and introspective where their companions are very expressive in their discontent. (Though personally I don’t think one way of handling it is better than the other in this case, it’s important to be true to one’s own feelings)
But that’s just my take on it, maybe people will come up with their own vision of what this means. I’d be happy to hear if you thought of a story when you saw it. That’s part of the fun of making something.
