Naruto Secret Santa - Happy holidays @elliejoys!
“You don’t even have to forgive me. And no matter what you decide to do from now on, know this… I will love you forever.”
The story of two brothers.
We don’t know what kind of people we truly are until the moment before our deaths. As death comes to embrace you, you will realize what you are.
…that is a true shinobi.
Itachi and his cats-friends
it’s now a trilogy

[I don’t think it’s fair to refer to the Itachi thing as redemption, for the same reason a villain can’t be seen as being corrupted at the point we discover their evil. Orochimaru wasn’t just a kinda-creepy Grass genin until we discover who he is, he isn’t corrupted at that precise moment - he’s just revealed. And Itachi is revealed, too.]
[Plus I mean when it comes to who’s culpable, and one party is a 12-13-yr-old boy acting under orders and emotional blackmail, while the other party is a body of authority figures telling him what to do? Iiiiii’m thinking the culpability does not exactly rest in the hands of the child.]
[sorry but I will go to the wall defending itachi. kid was used, and used badly.]
Unpopular Opinion time? Nope Nope. Slow down there buddy. Now don’t get me wrong, I adore Itachi. He was a great character, and I do not think he was evil in any way. Nor do I think he is solely to blame for his actions. But I will not be so bias due to my love for him. What he did was wrong, what he did was nonredeemable. Yes he was manipulated, as MANY genin are, and yes he was young, but that does not excuse the behaviour. Not by any stretch. There is no hate towards the character. I think most of us can agree he was freaking fantastic. I personally love him to death, one of my tops. But just like Oro, I’ll call them out when they are to blame. Killing his clan, no matter the cause, was wrong and morally unacceptable. He didn’t just kill a whole lot of shinobi, he killed those who were innocent. He killed the elderly, he killed children. It was a clan, not a family. There were tons of kids younger than Sasuke, there were retired shonobi who lived their youth fighting for the greater good. He killed his own mother who raised him with the sweetest of intentions. Did I say the authorities were free of blame? No. by the gods of course I blame them as well. But regardless of my love for Itachi, and regardless of the fact that I deeply pity his childhood, I can not say those actions are without fault. We can agree to disagree, my point remains. I don’t think there was enough justification to kill some of those people in the Uchiha clan. Nor do I think he is without some fault. Lots of characters have a dark past, Madara made me heartbroken, Obito made me heartbroken. Pein made me feel heartbroken. But I will not excuse their criminal activity. It would be more unfair to ignore their behaviour, for the victims are still the victims. Being a past victim yourself does not allow you to bypass responsibility of a future crime (unless it is self defense of course). Being a teen does not allow you to bypass responsibility. Either way, this is my view. You can defend him to the moon and back, I won’t excuse a crime. Do I love him still? Do I understand why he did it? Yes and yes. But he is the reason children, elderly and innocent shinobi perished prematurely. That part of the story I will say was still something he needed to make amends for. Again, I love Itachi, and I don’t think he is a villain. Even heroes and their comrades make mistakes. I don’t always have to agree with a character to either pity them or love them. But this is my view. No ones telling you to agree. We all have our opinions, and we all have rights to them. I’m not playing judge, I’m giving an opinion.
[[ i am so sorry for hijacking your post now, sara, but given itachi is my muse and my dearest character to write, i can’t go without giving my humble two cents. no denying itachi was a great character, that point stands and its fine if people want to defend him no matter what, just as long as they realize itachi did things wrong. and, oh boi, did he fuck up badly.
going deeper into the topic, itachi himself knew what he did was not okay. he knew himself what he has done is wrong, and killing babies, children at their mother’s breast and elderly men pleading him to stop killing their families while they could, itachi did not back up knowing very well if he stops, the clan will be killed no matter what: including his brother, including many more innocent villagers and there he would have gotten it worse: killing his clan was the only solution he saw at this point in time to prevent a war within the village, to keep his brother save. we all know how badly it backfired, we all know orochimaru took sasuke in, we all know how ruined sasuke was after this night.
we all know. we know, itachi knows, and believe me, it tortures him the most. he is aware of what he did was wrong, aware that, at this young age, he committed a crime that would be charged with the death penalty would the law system in konoha be this complex.
in any way, no matter what he tells you on screen, the man wanted to die for what he did, wanted to die so his brother could be well and fine with his eyes, with the power they’d grant sasuke. fine and well, he wanted his brother to life a good life: and failed at that. he was young, yes. he wasn’t stupid, but he loved his brother to a point where it was no longer healthy and where he could no longer judge freely. he is not a bad person.
he may have had nice intentions, most “villains” do, but he acted wrong. he knows. he accepted death, accepted his punishment and waited years for sasuke to come. the fact that there are still people defending him to the point of saying “itachi did nothing wrong” should tell how bad of a writing it was on kishimoto’s side, or maybe they refuse to see the good in the writing and the truth by that. itachi wanted his brother to be safe, wanted the village to be safe, wanted to be blamed for all he has done and embraced death the way he deserved it.
