My friend, the ever charming and gentle Sushruthi Krishna

I was witness to all the fanfare and love by the "Brands," and "media" for women on March 8, for the International Women's Day. It was good to hear voices about "power to women, women's emancipation," and more such ideas.

My thought veered to find out if we have traveled enough to give life to these ideas. Is March 8 just another "media and advertising," occasion?

No was the answer. These are not just symbolic anymore. We have traveled a long distance, but still need to go further.

These thoughts gained a major portion of my time recently as my close friend Sushruthi Krishna was competing as a finalist at the FBB Femina Miss India 2015. I would like to recollect the person she is. Hence my thinking that we have come a long way, and we need people like Sushruthi Krishna to represent India in the International Forums to show the "power of women."

I and Sushruthi were together during schoold days. Sushruthi is a person with great clarity. Be it the career she wanted to take-up or the decisions as a Captain she took. Sushruthi had choosen and finalized her career stream in Class 10, when we were looking around for options. She is a very good leader and is good at taking decisions. She would be decisive and would not be harsh in getting her thoughts across to her team mates.

Being a person who knows what exactly precise means, she knew her choices. Whether be it her clothes or people to hang out with. She would decide and go through with it. She  could say "NO" without having to explain her decisions.

I would also like to call her charming and gentle. A very easy going person, she would not sit idle.

A generous person, early in her life she could not see any person in distress, poverty or troubled, she set her goals to be a contributor to the social sector. Again, she had planned to set up Anatta, a social initiative working for the girl child, during her college days.

Sushruthi is very polished with a lot of elan, knows how to handle people, whether being playful with children or very respectful to elders or being gently and soft-spoken. Sushruthi, I know you will be an ideal person to represent us, Indians, in the International Forum. I wish you all the best and look forward to you reaching the spot. Best.

7 Things I know about FBB Femina Miss India Finalist

We all get our moments of joy at odd times and odd places. I got to experience a true sense of joy when I really understood that my very close friend Sushruthi Krishna is one of the Final 23 at the FBB Femina Miss India. She is currently competing in Mumbai. I wish and hope that she goes on to represent India in the International fora. All the best Sushruthi. 

We all go through our moments of ups and downs in life, but she handles it with elan. She is a girl of great substance and depth, rock solid and stands by you like a rock. Sushruthi, no matter what happens in this competition, you will emerge victorious having reached this height already. Here are the 7 things I feel define her after having been a very close friend in the college: 

Helpful

Sushruthi is very helpful and she is there whenever you need her. At times, she not just was there, but also roped in more friends to help. An instance comes to my mind when I had given up on my Jury review. It was 12 in the night, I had lost all hopes and had literally given up, when she said, there's no way you are going to do that. And the next 8 hours were the best time that I utilized. She pulled together a team, traveled long distance and saw to it that I completed the presentation for the Jury. Infact, it came out as one of the best in my class. 

Affectionate

Being an affectionate person is something that comes naturally to Sushruthi. You feel a sense of care and concern when you are around her. Whether it is not letting being hungry or ensuring we are all together, she is there showing her affectionate self.

Lively

You don't sit in one place for long duration when you are with Sushruthi. There has to be some kind of activity happening with her around. Whether chilling out together or being part of her social causes, she makes it a point for us all to be active all the time. 

Creative

That's the word which would describe her more. She is a very creative person and has brought out her creativity in various forms. From fusion dancing to drumming, to ballet to unique solutions to girl child problems, she brings out her creativity.

Planner

She is a very good planner, and has balanced her studies, creative activities and sports so that nothing gets affected. It's a difficult task for a normal youngster, but she does it with ease. This is something I feel that will take her to great heights. 

Strong & Determined

Sushruthi brings a unique perspective to challenges that we have faced, knows to cope with it and come out well. She is a very determined person, and it generally rubs off on you when she is around. There have been instances when I have felt that I acted with more determination and conviction, than I would have, when Sushruthi was around.

Leader

A true leader, who stands by her team. She has choreographed a number of dances for her college, taken part in fashion shows as the head designer, also planned an entire college trip with one of her batch mate. Truly a leader in every which way. 

Sushruthi, today you are competing in Mumbai. I do know that you have in it to win and represent all the girls in India in an International fora. God bless

Versatile daughter Sushruthi Krishna at FBB Femina Miss India

"It's OK Ma! I will make it up next time," she said and hugged me just when I opened the door. Perplexed I quickly tried to gather my thoughts on what she was referring to. My mind raced as I struggled to put together the pieces of where she had been that day and whether she had mentioned anything about it.

I was still reeling after the long international confcall and some project tasks that had to be completed by end of day when my daughter, Sushruthi hugged me. I hastily gathered myself and asked her what had happened? She blurted out that the competition was tough and she had lost in the sports competition in School. I then remembered that she had mentioned to me a few days ago that she was participating in a sports competition. It had completely slipped my mind! So much so for my years of working in the corporate field.

My thoughts then veered around to the age of my daughter and the maturity with which she had handled failure. Would I have been so graceful and confident to handle failure - at 16-years?! I doubt it. Here she was, Sushruthi Krishna, convincing me that it's okay to loose and there's always a next time to do better. Today she is one of the 23 finalists at the FBB Feminda Miss India Pageantry, competing against the crème de la crème in this country to represent India in the international foray. Does she deserve to be there competing and winning? Yes, of course. I am not just saying this because I am a proud mother, but only because she deserves it.

'Versatile' is the word for her - sports, arts, community service or academics she is all there!
