“I’ve organized a lot of programs in prison. One of the classes I started is called Creative Parenting. It’s the most popular class here. The waiting list is really long. I don’t have any kids myself, but I noticed that most guys are really soft for their kids. So that gave me an idea. Mainly we just make stuff and send it to the kids. We’ll do coloring projects where the father will color half the picture, and the kid will color the second half. We write bedtime stories. Most of the guys write about sports, but we make sure that every story has a moral. Sometimes we’ll take funny photos and send them to the kids. One guy’s daughter was really into My Little Pony. He was a tough guy. He was in a gang and everything, but he put his hair into pigtails and pretended to be a horse. We did another class where we made cards for kids with cancer. I had my family set it up with a hospital. We made about 200 cards. They didn’t want us to write ‘I hope you feel better,’ because that reminds the kids of what they’re going through. So we tried to keep it focused on Christmas. There were 150 guys in my unit, and 60 signed up for that program. A lot of the guys had to wait outside because the room was too small.” (Federal Correctional Complex: Hazelton, West Virginia)

I like this song more than Sam Smith's theme, but it doesn't sound like a Bond theme. Writing's on the Wall is unmistakably Bond. Those strings!

Personally, I'm waiting for something more like "Goldfinger." I had high hopes for Skyfall, but to be honest, I haven't really liked a Bond theme since "View to a Kill."

We’re currently in the middle of a series about a young Iraqi refugee named Aya. As many of you know, Aya’s story does not yet have a happy ending. After years of hardship, her application for resettlement in the United States was rejected. She has just begun an appeal process. As we learn the rest of the story, if you feel inclined to lend your voice in support of her appeal, I have created a petition for that purpose. It’s not a petition, actually. We’re not asking that any action be taken. It’s an invitation. It’s an invitation for President Obama to join us in saying: ‘Aya is important to us. We do not believe she is a threat. And we think she deserves to be here.’ When I read the language of our invitation to Aya last night on Skype, she began sobbing. She has been carrying her story alone for years, and she had almost given up hope. And now someone cares. Aya is sleeping now. But when she wakes up tomorrow, I hope she sees just how many of us care.

Am I the only one?

Who else thinks it's weird to have a razor commercial where a man gets surprised while shaving?

Gather round kids while I explain this manipulation tactic that men perpetually try to use and why it’s bullshit.

If someone is openly showing interest in you by making disparaging or disappointed comments about your age, they’re trying to put you on the defensive. This guy wants me to try to quell his discomfort, to bring up that I’m only a month shy of 20, etc. - he wants me to try to prove myself to him, that I’m mature and adult enough for a man like him.

His goal is to establish a power imbalance right off the bat. If we were to date, I would constantly be on the defensive, constantly striving to be an equal, constantly trying to prove my “adult” credentials. Anything he says or does or wants from this point on that I object to would just be seen as a strike against my age, proof that he was right and that I’m not mature enough for him. This is how SO MANY men pressure younger individuals (primarily women and girls) into situations and relationships they aren’t comfortable with. If he truly thought I was too young for him, he wouldn’t have messaged me. This is a very calculated move, and it’s fucking gross.

Adult relationships with age gaps are completely fine, but only if all parties view each other as equals. If someone is trying to set you up in a way that ensures that’s never a possibility, run far away.

The Tetris effect (also known as Tetris Syndrome) occurs when people devote so much time and attention to an activity that it begins to pattern their thoughts, mental images, and dreams. It is named after the video game Tetris.

People who play Tetris for a prolonged amount of time may then find themselves thinking about ways different shapes in the real world can fit together, such as the boxes on a supermarket shelf, the buildings on a street, or hallucinating pieces being generated and falling into place on an invisible layout. In this sense, the Tetris effect is a form of habit. They might also dream about falling tetrominos when drifting off to sleep or see images of falling tetrominos at the edges of their visual fields or when they close their eyes. In this sense, the Tetris effect is a form of hypnagogic imagery.

What’s the expression? The friend of your friend is your friend too?

Well, I have a couple of awesome friends and their friend Matthew was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in August 2014, at the age of 24, immediately upon returning from his honeymoon.

Although doctors were optimistic initially, he hasn’t responded to any of the available treatments. His last hope is the CART-19 clinical trial at the Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute in New York. Here’s the catch though. The cost for the treatment and medical care needs to be provided upfront, which means that he needs to raise up to $800,000 dollars ASAP.

As a Canadian citizen and a firm believer in our healthcare system, this is unfathomable to me. The major cost is the hospitalization and treatment. The clinical trial uses genetically modified T-cells to attack cancer cells. This stuff is at the forefront of cancer therapy.

It was that I had decided to stop being me. And I needed to find that nerdy, intelligent kid that I’d once been. So I started studying in prison. Then one day I got a letter from Principal Lopez. And she told me: ‘I grew up with you. And I know that you aren’t the person they say you are. So the moment you get out of prison, you are going to come speak to my kids, because I want them to learn from your experience.’ And I immediately started crying in my cell. And sure enough, two days after I got out, she called me on the phone, and asked: ‘Why aren’t you here yet?”

But not here, not in the messy inconvenient spaces where victims aren’t golden-haired princesses snatched out of their towers and rapists aren’t nameless moral black holes with no past and no future, with only THE RAPE as the defining characteristic of their entire existence.
