Vengeance For The Serpent Of Knowledge

As a kid I attended Catholic school for a while and then spent my adolescence in an evangelical church. To appease the adults in my life I did my best to treat the Bible as the absolute truth. Even so, I found it hard to understand why the serpent was so terrible. “Knowledge” was always presented to me as a positive thing that gives people power and reasoning. The demonization of the animal and character in the book of genesis felt unjustified. Still does.

Dr. Patricia Era Bath, circa 1970. She was the first woman to lead a post-graduate training program in ophthalmology.

Dr. Bath invented the Laserphaco scope to treat and remove cataracts. She was the first Black American woman to complete a residency in ophthalmology at NYU. She also co-founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness.
