Hello,
It's me again asking for help, but its for a worthy cause. Please help me become a certified lactation counselor.
Since my previous fundraiser went well, I thought why not ask my community to help me out with one more thing. A CLC is a certified lactation counselor. Since I am now on my way to be a full circle doula, I realized I'm also interested in lactation and helping women breastfeed. A breastfeeding class is also a requirement for my full circle doula certification so I'm killing two birds with one stone. With this class I could help women breastfeed and the CLC credential is recognized by insurance so as a doula and CLC I can offer coded receipts that clients can take to their insurance companies to seek reimbursement. My dream is to become a nurse-midwife and lactation consultant and with going to this workshop, I'll be one step closer to my dream. Hello everyone,
Thanks again for all the help. I really appreciate it. Chicago was amazing, I've learned so much. Going to Chicago has only made me just hungrier for knowledge and more trainings. I just love trainings, usually I get cranky by the second or third day of the training. But I really do love them.Â
I'm so excited. Right now I'm in Chicago and just waiting for my training to start.Â
There is a CC not even 5 minutes from our house. I could start there and transfer, it would save me money. My thing is, I would love to aim towards women of color, women with low income and Muslim sisters.
Do you plan on becoming a nurse midwife or a direct entry midwife?

Thank you everyone who donated and signal boosted my post. Thanks to you and my Dad, I'm able to pay for my doula training and go to the ICTC training in Chicago. I'm so excited to broaden my skills as a doula. I'll keep everyone updated. This will also be my first time in Chicago. I'm just so excited

i am currently signing up for a doula training course and am applying for an internship at a midwife clinic in my area. i know this seems like a weird jump, you know seeing as i’m a zoology major, but i really want to do this for a few years. i think holistic birthing is an amazing option for women, one that i personally want to take, and i want to work with those women. (i’m sorry mindy lahiri)

I was wondering if any of you doulas have college degrees. If so, what do you have a degree in? I want to go to college while becoming a certified doula. What do you guys suggest I major in if I want to become a doula?
Well, I'm in the process of getting a degree. Currently my major is Anthropology and that is how I ended up learning about how doulas. Hopefully if I get into any of the schools I'm applying to I'll be getting a degree in midwifery. Really it depends on your interests. I wouldn't say there is a specific major for a doula, because we come in all shapes and sizes.

MS: OK, I had to step away from my computer a moment to fully process this. Did I catch this right?—you said: Too many Kegels can cause Pelvic Floor Dysfunction? Did everyone hear that loud screeching noise? You realize this goes against everything I’ve ever heard or read; that kegels are the be all end all for pelvic floor strength.
KB: I know, I feel like I’m running around saying The Sky is Falling, The Sky is Falling. The misunderstanding of pelvic floor issues is so widely spread, I’m a Team of One right now. But, I’ve got all of the science backing it up and it makes sense, the kegel is just such a huge part of our inherited culture information, no one bothered to fully examine it. Anyhow, your PF is underneath the weight of your organs, and the strength your PF needs is equal to this weight (you don’t need SUPER STRONG PF muscles, just enough to keep everything closed). When you run, the extra G forces (2-3) actually increase the “weight” while running, but the PF should be adapting, just like all your muscles. One of the biggest misnomers is that tight muscles are “strong” and loose muscles are “weak.” In actuality, the strongest muscle is one that is the perfect length - you need Pelvic Floor Goldilocks - it’s juuuuuust right. The Kegel keeps making the PF tighter and tighter (and weaker and weaker). The short term benefits are masking the long term detriments. Ditch the kegels and add two to three squat sessions throughout the day (anywhere). The glutes strengthen and as a result, they pull the sacrum back, stretching the PF from a hammock to a trampoline. Viola! You can still practice opening and closing your PF in real-time situations, but you don’t have to approach it like a weight-lifting session or anything. It doesn’t need to be on the To Do list :)

Help A Wannabe Doula Out
Hello my name is Mahal and I’m a new birth doula based out of South East Michigan. I am a woman of color. My dream is to eventually be a midwife but until then I want to support folks in a very important era of their life: parenthood. I want to support people from pregnancy till the 4th trimester. Which brings me to why I’m asking for help.

Do/Can regualr health insurance cover a midwife or doula or is that an out of pocket type thing??
Our friend Emily is training to be a doula and She and I have talked about her being there for the birth and She hasn’t actually participated or assisted yet so by the time we get pregnant we should be golden. She’s also only 1.5 hours away…Â
First she'll have to ask for an insurance provider number. Which I've heard isn't hard to get. She might have to be certified with an organization(not sure about this). You the parents will have to petition the insurance to reimburse you. If they don't a backup plan is to ask for a doula fund for your baby shower or something. Or start saving now :)
