zakary-prashad:
Zakary was certain that with every day that passed he was becoming the version of himself that he might’ve wanted to be when he was little. Not that much of anything worker out: he had no coven, still an intern and thus barely on the payroll, living as small as possible, and knew he had so much untapped potential with the magic form that had rested below his skin all those years, used only by the Spirit. But while his hair was growing far too long, covens constantly turned him down, and he was no closer to figuring out how to use his skills, he was free.
And freedom made him capable of wanting more. For the first time, he had begun to look more hopeful about his future. Even if those hopes came with unrealistic ideas.
It was why his heart was hammering in his chest when Laura had called him. Like it always did, no matter the circumstances. The very thought of her could overshadow his darkest thoughts, and now it merely made the bleeding organ in his heart overtake his whole being. More than a year had gone past since they had shared a kiss, but his crush on her was untouched by time.
“Hey,” he said, when she opened the door. He had brought some food, vegan indian curry that he rarely treated himself too because it was too expensive. But this was Laura. He looked at her and hope surged through him.
Laura had paused briefly, her head against the door, to take in the scene. Zak holding comfort food, framed by the doorway and the background scenery of cinnamon dusted and copper gilded leaves. He was too good to her, she thought decidedly. Even when her own attitude towards him had wavered.
He looked.. well. Far more nourished than a couple months back. Where had once stood a ghost of her friend, now stood a revived version. One that filled out his clothes as opposed to having them hang loosely on him, one that looked like he was.. thriving. Any signs of tiredness didn’t seem supernatural, just like every other person who didn’t have the luxury of hitting the snooze button more than once.---- Those simple signs of normalcy made her go in for a hug- though she was aware nothing about anyone in this town had been exactly normal.
“You didn’t need to bring food,” she protested softly as she backed out of the hug, gesturing for him to enter. “I should be treating you,” Laura didn’t want him spending his money on her. She was the one that needed to make up for being a less than commendable friend. Characteristically, she’d been selfishly consumed by all that was going wrong with her own life. Taking the time to check up on those she considered the closest seemed to be impossible.
“I heard a congratulations is in order” Because like every one else, Zakary’s life wasn’t at a standstill. It seemed as though Laura’s life had been paralyzed by all her misfortunes. What made it even worse was that she had to watch everyone else around her come into their own- Leon as a dad, Zak as he pursued his dreamed. All while she remained floundering.
Despite her genuine well wishes, there was a slight currant of envy that ran through her. An envy that made her feel so uncomfortable with herself, a chill wracked her body- physically rejecting the ill thoughts that had accompanied her more acceptable ones.
“Working for a newspaper, Zak, that’s amazing! You have to tell me all about it”
Location- Laura’s home
Time: Who knows, I’m just happy to be back lol!
Laura had been no stranger to insecurity. It was an old acquaintance that popped up from time to time with little to no warning and though she couldn’t foresee it making an appearance- she almost certainly knew when it had arrived.
She was keenly aware of the baggage Leon had carried with him and little by little he’d unspooled some of what weighed her down as well. But as Leon and his ex- and the mother of his child- grew more and more amicable Laura could feel her old acquaintance elbow itself into their interactions. She heard herself, but couldn’t stop herself, pry ever so slightly whenever he mentioned bumping into his ex. It was never an accusatory tone but one with a tad too much curiosity. And just as misery loved company, insecurity had friends of their own; envy, doubt and less than healthy coping mechanisms.
She knew she was engaging in the latter when she called Zak over. Instead of communicating her feelings like her new found therapy had suggested, she resorted to old patterns. And who could blame her? Zak had an unmatched way of making feel Laura safe amongst the chaos that was both their lives; both separately and summated.
Laura had all but leapt off her couch when the doorbell rang, eager for the validation he always brought with him; that she was likable, desirable and most of all--- enough.

lDani sighed, frustrated but relieved at the offer at least. There were three stages but in between them were all kinds of distractions and vendors and activities, it was easy for her to get lost in the excitement, and get turned around. She opened her mouth to decline the offer, she didn’t want to impede on her fun, or be demanding, yet she was here by herself, it would be nice to make a potential friend. She shrugged, smiling despite the action, “Please, because at this point I think I’d get lost from here and a hundred yards. I’m Dani,“ She introduced quickly, to make small conversation and not be too awkward. I”m really here for Meg, but there are a lot of other artist here I’m excited for.”
“Laura,” she offered back with a smile, “I’d offer to shake your hand but..” she trailed off, holding up her hand that had traces of ketchup. She was more than happy to let Dani join her group if need be- the more the people to have fun with, or at least that’s how she viewed it. “Me too” Laura gasped, pointing to her cowboy hat she’d been sporting. “I wore this just for her performance” It was her way of showing some Texan love even if her hometown in Texas hardly reciprocated that same sentiment. “Are you here alone?” She asked conversationally as she dodged out of someone’s way, leading the way. She’d been doing a lot of ducking and swerving since she’d gotten to the camp grounds in an attempt to avoid a collision but she figured it was all part of the experience.
tuaharjuna:
Tuah laughed at the comment, feeling his cheeks warmed. Though he had asked the opinion of others, it was difficult to imagine that he was able to pull it off. He appreciated the compliment, however, no matter how warm his cheeks felt. “I’m no fashion expert either, so believe it or not, this isn’t something I’d wear.” He was more leather jacket and t-shirts and jeans type of person, but he wanted to try something different coming to the festival. “My friend, Sahid, suggested for me to wear them. I’m glad I listened to them.” It was more of a ploy for him to buy something for Sahid than himself, but he didn’t want them to feel awkward like the last time they went shopping. “You look amazing, by the way. Are you looking forward to any performance in particular?”
“Oh me either!” Laura’s gaze fell to her barely clad body. The only comfort zone she had remained in was sticking to a neutral colour palette but on any other day she was more than happy to sport jeans and a tank top. “But I think that’s the point right! For a weekend we get to be whoever or whatever we want to be,” she said reassuringly. An “oh,” leaving her lips at the compliment as her green eyes dipped to her outfit once more. “Thank you!” It took every bit of control not to counteract or question the compliment, one of her resolutions for the new year. “So many! I really want to see Haim and Halsey but I wore this for Megan” She tipped the cowboy hat on her head in Tuah’s direction.

Carleigha smiled as she felt Laura approach, their arms linking as they walked along the expanse of the festival. “Oooh then we best get there before they get all booked up. The line around the piercing booth is ridiculously long.” She had to work for the first day, so she’d only caught the last few performances but she was determined to take in all the fun these two days, even dragged Owen to join her. Not that he came with much complaining, dancing and music had always been a favored past time for the two of them.
She chuckled following along as Laura navigated through the crowd. It was good to spend a little time together. After the recent events the pair had been spending a lot of time with their respective friends, those that they’d lost during that magical separation. They had yet to spend much time together. “Not yet but I’ve been meaning to. There’s just so much to do. It’s been so long since I’ve taken the time to get to one of these festivals. I’d go to Coachella but its not as fun when you can’t go out during the day”
“I was thinking of getting a piercing too,” Laura reached up with her unlinked arm to touch her ear, turning her head so Carly could see “maybe an industrial? But I think everyone had the same idea” Live while you were young, right? It was the constant theme she was seeing throughout the festival of people desperate to enjoy their time and money spent to the fullest.
Was it bad that, despite living with Carly, it hadn’t even occurred that most of the vampire population- unless they had something to protect them- had to miss out on the morning and early afternoon performances. Offering some perspective to the brunette that every species had its pros and cons.
“It’s my first one!” Laura replied, the excitement bubbling out of her. She’d been to state fairs back in Texas but it was nothing like this. At home they were lucky if the corndogs weren’t stale and the rides weren’t just assembled for show- some of them too hazardous to actually climb onto and give a whirl. “I can’t believe how many things they’ve crammed into one space,” she continued, her eyes searching for a booth with the words Henna plastered all over it as they approached the area she’d been told about. “Do you see any sign of it?”

To say Dani was tingling with excitement was and understatement, but was the most accurate to describe her emotion before it became a bit too extra. She felt a slight pang of sadness, nostalgia, remembering music festivals and concerts she went to with her twin, but she ignored it, pushing it down below the excitement, past the slight homesickness, and deeper than the loneliness that came with the new resident territory. She was out to have fun, get wasted, and possibly be put in an uber because driving was not gonna be an option.
Naturally, she dressed up some, since on the daily for 8+ hours she was in uniform, and even though she tried to express her love of colors and brightness via scrubs, it would never be as good as wearing her own clothes and displaying her own expression. The heels, m a y b e she’d regret later, running from stage to stage and causing foot pain, but she hoped that she’d be too distracted to notice. Just like she was now, getting lost and turned around repeatedly. It was miracle that she could navigate the hospital and school she was studying at, especially if she was just struggling with just three stages. She caught someone, sticking her arm out quick but gently, hoping that she wasn’t startling them. “Hey, do you know, is this Paten Stage?”
Being the only vegan, Laura had separated from her group when they all set out for the area of the campground dedicated to the eateries. Hardly a concern- as she considered herself as having a fairly decent sense of direction. And with the alcohol wearing off she was certain it wouldn’t be too much of a challenge finding them once more. Divide and conquer: that was the motto if you were determined to catch all the sets you wanted to and didn’t want to spend precious time in too many lines.
She’d been navigating through the crowd, mid-bite of a meatless hotdog, when she felt the light touch on her arm. The brunette not so much as jumping, having already gotten desensitized to all the bumping and frequent touches that came with the territory of attending a festival. Tucking her freshly cut hair behind her ear, she leaned in, in an attempt to better catch what was being asked. Her hazel gaze lifting to inspect their surroundings once the question registered , “I’m pretty sure this one is Onyx,” her reply had been loud enough so she could be heard over the blaring music,“but I’m heading to Paten now if you want to walk together.”

“A little birdie told me” Laura cooed, linking arms with her roommate, “there’s a henna booth on the west side of the Sunset stage.” It had been all Laura had talked about when she’d scored her tickets to the festival. It was pretty solid logic- if she was going to take an entire weekend off of work she wanted to make it worth her while. Which meant doing every activity the festival had to offer: henna, body art, heck- even impromptu piercings if need be.
Skillfully, she navigated through the sea of dancing bodies, walking through a cloud of exhaled smoke as she gently brought Carly along with her. Despite having attended with their own respective friend groups Laura was happy for a little roommate bonding outside the house. “Have you been on the ferris wheel yet?” She asked, eyes searching for the booth the overly friendly stranger had told her about after Laura had complimented her gladiator sandals.
sahid-chettair:
LOCATION: Paten Stage TIME: 9.35pm, March 5th (after Lizzo) @laura–young
Sahid had swapped shifts with one of their volunteer colleagues just so they could catch Lizzo. They figured if it hadn’t been for being deaf, nobody would’ve really swapped with them, because on the way out they were suddenly center stage to being told to “enjoy the show”. Given the situation, Sahid did enjoy the show, it was kind of weird at the beginning, but they got swept up in the dancing with strangers and could sometimes guess at the song she was playing. When the crowd slowly dispersed after the show, Sahid was left standing for a moment, the hype wearing off. “Was she good live?” they asked, turning to someone who was also left standing.
Laura had never experienced such a sense of euphoria in her life, ever. Not even when she was madly in love. The harmony of dancing with strangers, playing off of each others energies, was an intrinsic feeling she never wanted to let go of. Though, to be fair, the sticker on her tongue that had melted away within a matter of seconds- leaving behind a semi-bitter taste in her mouth- had helped.
Recognizing the person that had gotten pulled into the mosh pit with her not too long ago, Laura felt the look of confusion sweep across her features at the question. Perhaps it was her mind playing tricks on her- something she couldn’t be sure of in her current state. Prompting her to respond without a second thought. “She was” she yelled over the music that had been coming through the speakers as they broke down her set to prepare it for whoever was next. “The flute solos were my favourite part!”
