The Dales
“A great exodus of elves undertook the journey to their new home, crossing ocean, desert, and mountain. Their city, the first elven city since the fabled Arlathan, was called Halamshiral. A new era had begun for the elves.
But the old era wasn’t through with them. In their forest city, the elves turned again to worship their silent, ancient gods. They became increasingly isolationist, posting Emerald Knights who guarded their borders with jealousy, rebuking all efforts at trade or civilized discourse. Dark rumors spread in the lands that bordered the Dales, whispers of humans captured and sacrificed to elven gods.
And then came an attack by the elves on the defenseless village of Red Crossing. The Chantry replied with the Exalted March of the Dales, and the era of the elven kingdom came to an end. Halamshiral was utterly destroyed, the elves driven out, scattered, left to survive on goodwill alone.”

TSK – the click of her tongue against teeth was enough of a response. It sufficed well enough to let Talen know how she felt about his sudden, serious turn. Kia was no stranger to death; to the toying way it liked to bounce the strings that all living creatures dangled upon. Such delicate, spindly threads that threatened to snap at the slightest of jiggles. Hers should have been severed long ago; a life extended past its true expiration. And certainly Talen was no stranger to such a dance, either. No longer at least…the Blight and life as a Warden saw to that. But the last thing she wished to do was argue and bicker with him on such matters. For she could practically see his frown as it was.
“ That’s a part of their charm; their armor took most of the blow anyway. ” She joined with the jest, head leaning against the wall as hands clasped on her lap. She’d nearly forgotten the sound of his voice. The effortless way it soothed her very being. Called her back from the brink of all sorts of things. “ Ah yes…The doom is rather nice today. ” Normally, it’d be followed with a chuckle, but the concern was etched in the lines of her face. “ Talen, I’ve gotta ask, are you hearing it? ”
He knew that question was coming. There was too much doom for it not to reach and dig its claws down deep in and remind the Warden of his ever waning mortality. There was a scoff, one that had been an attempt to mimic that of her own, the corner of his lip just tucked enough to show some air of amusement. But there was only a breath of it, those old dolling wardrums echoing deep in the dark of his head. “The doom is quite favorable. Even a slight chance of mayhem I figure, which you can never go wrong with I imagine.” His eyes flicker up to her face and he is glad she cannot see the exhaustion in his own fading eyes.
“Yes,” enough avoiding the question, chewing on a lip as he leans back and spends a long moment drinking. “It came in the night a few weeks ago. It reminds me of when I first had to partake in the ritual to become this. But it’s much louder now than it was then.” He sits up, “But come now. I didn’t steal you away for you to talk to such unhappy things. Tell me how is your brother? Are you keeping him out of trouble?”
“The song… in my head. It… calls to me. He sings to me! I can’t stop it!”

She missed him, in turn; they are both capable of surviving separately, but she — LOVES HIM, simply. He is the world. They are meant to be together, not apart. “You certainly do,” she teases, giggling against his lips when he kisses her. “You needn’t worry about me, ara’lin.” It’s a silly thing to say, as though she hadn’t feared and worried over him quite enough for two. Neither of them have easy lives. “I’m too tough —” she puffs out her chest, “— for anybody to kill!”
She has become everything that he could have ever wanted. She is strong and she is capable of anything. The world is at her throat but she holds her head higher just to prove to the lot of them she is not weak. Talen envies her strength. But more than that, he finds himself honored that she would love him back. “You are far too strong to let anything take you off your feet,” his arms wrap around her and pluck her up into his arms though, leaning to kiss her again because he finds himself unable to stop. “Except for me. Take the day away with me, vhenan. Please?”

“A Hart…?” Then he realized what a Hart was. One of those Dalish things. Emerald somethings who rode around on Harts…doing things. Now he wished he hadn’t fallen asleep on his desk every time one of the Tranquil read aloud to him. “You’re Dalish?!” And then immediately after felt quite stupid, his face hot when he realized how loudly he said that.
Zadkiel clamored onto the back of the creature, now very silent. He’d never ridden a hors-Hart before, and suddenly felt very tall. But the gait was smoother than what he expected a horse to feel like, and despite all the aches and pains, he was quite comfortable. Without even thinking, his hypervigilance faded, slowly dozing off.
“MM Dalish yes,” Though it had been many years since Talen had truly felt of the people. He’d lost his love for his clan long ago and it only made him bitter toward the others. But he left it at that, the boy was ailing and he needed aid far more than he needed some sad story from a man he’d only just met. A hand was gently pressed against Zadkiel’s side, keeping him braced against his chest as he guided Ellas toward the camp he’d been seeking. His men crowded around him as he arrived, and he merely waved them away, headed toward his tent and gently lowering himself and the boy into his arms. “Fetch me the healers,” he called, lowering Zadkiel into his cot and helping to strip him of the muddy clothes. He sat by and aided in what way he could with bandaging and cleaning the boy’s wounds, sending the healers on their way once it seemed Zadkiel had been given all the treatment possible to help.

Astraeus’s sharp eyes gentled faintly as xe watched the young one; Talen was a boy. He should have been with his clan, growing and thriving amidst the land. Not fighting a human’s war whilst trying to save the entire world as any of these young ones - Wynne included - knew. If wishes were fishes. Slowly, in case he wished to avoid or push aside xir hand, xe reached out, and gently set long golden fingers upon his lower arm. “Should you ever wish, we would concoct an herbal drink to help you sleep. We cannot promise it would block all disruptions, but with some experimentation, we wish to bring you some measure of peace, da’len.” Within xir chest, xe could feel the stirrings of a long familiar warmth: a mother’s love. Talen had been torn away from his family, but xe would be at his side, xe had determined, so long as he would allow them.
The promise of a night’s rest seemed almost too good to fathom, further than his fingers could actually reach out and grasp onto. But they seemed so certain, an almost promise that there was something to be done. That he did not simply have to suffer through it all. “A drink to help me sleep? I would really like to at least try. I’m good with my herbs but I wouldn’t even know where to begin to find something like that.” He turns his eyes to them and gives them a hopeful look. “Will you help me make such a thing?”

Tentative, Saskia seemed to withhold the smile that wished to bloom. Surely he did not indeed feel that way; it was a way of playing nice. Keeping airs about oneself while there were prying ears around. Best way to make a good entrance, right? Especially after one must live up to the one the Inquisitor caused for themselves some time ago. Didn’t make her appreciate the comment any less, though. It was one she could cling to in quiet moments. A sort of dreamy state that perhaps in some universe, someone as good as he could have fallen for her.
“ I didn’t see an archdemon! ” Kia quipped, knowing smirk on her lips. A toyful sort of way of phrasing it. “ Besides - people overexaggerate all the time, Talen. Here I thought the Blight woulda taught ya that. ” She gave a wink before her head bowed, hands returning to her own person and away from Talen. Couldn’t make it too obvious now could we?
“ I’ll try to recall from now on. Lethallan…Oh. I’ve been fine. Mostly traveling…laying low. Stuck around Ferelden for the most part; no one here had any desire to see me in the Circle. Nothing too interesting, I’m afraid. And yourself? How have those travels alone been? Leisurely without all us cohorts at your toes I"m certain. ”
Talen isn’t so eased by her placement of humor, another time perhaps but she could have just as easily had been killed and the simple thought of that what if made his stomach wobble. “Over-exaggerated or not I did get to see the ruin that was left of Haven, Kia. It’s nothing to scoff at, even I’ll admit that. I would have been devastated to lose you in that and I’m just glad you’re both safe and happy here.” His smile was sincere not that she could see, nor the soft way that he looked at her. Stupid girl making him feel things.
Her questions of being alone though struck him a little raw. Nothing had been the same since his companions from the Blight have uprooted themselves and left. They had become a psuedo family and while he understood that they had their own lives to live after saving the world, it had broken little pieces of his heart to watch them go. “It’s quieter without everyone. Perhaps a little more deadly but I don’t have to worry about big brash warriors triggering any traps while I’m out and about on my own.” A jab at Alistair and Sten alike. He’d missed both of those meat headed baboons.
“But it is nice to be in the company of a friend again. It reminds me of before, there’s even the ever impending doom over our heads just like old times right?”
